If you do end up re-wiring your devices using molex connectors and 5v for the fans...so that it runs on a standard PSU please know

Not hard. A Molex Connector is rated for 11 amps, but I would not put more than 4 amps on one, so that is 48 watts. Each unit requires 8 watts, so that is 6 units per molex connector.

Once you have the unit in hand, you can find the right plug size at your local Radio Shack store. You will then have to custom make the power adapters, which only involves A LOT of soldering.

Question: Why not use the PSU and cables that come with the 10/20 unit kits (LA3M, LA6M)? Why do you want to use a standard ATX PSU?

I orded an LA3M a couple days ago, and paid using BTC. If the devices work as well as expected, I'll order a second and retire my GPU-based miner. Ideally I'd mount the units in that case, which has already had its drive bays removed (turns out 7990s are really long!) and now has plenty of room. If I do that I'll probably use a standard PSU and wire the miners into molex connectors. I'd also be able to easily rewire the fans to use 5V power.

If you do end up re-wiring your devices using molex connectors and 5v for the fans...so that it runs on a standard PSU please know...the reason is because I am paying/donating for that info. Its not much but I'm offering 1-2 LTC for someone who can write up decent instructions on how to do that.  Please see my post here:  https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=13314.msg125493#msg125493

The firmware is completed today, so nobody has it yet. It will be bundled with the units that will start shipping Monday. I will make a complete guide on how to get started with the new firmware soon.
I will also put steps on how to flash from the Chinese firmware (for those that ordered early).

Will the source code be easy to port to say a Raspberry Pi or other microcontrollers? These Wiiboxes look cheap and does not look reliable few months down the line
I believe DrFranz and Chirale were working on getting this running on a Rasbery Pi.  You and Sandor11 may want to get in touch with them on a collaboration (if you haven't already).
This is correct. Drfranz is indeed able to compile everything on Raspberry PI and on other architectures. He has patched the buggy code from gridseed github, because their code doesn't work as it is. He uploaded the video on vimeo mentioned in this thread multiple times Wink

thanks for the comprehensive info! if you don't mind please update us with pics and power consumption stats...

I ordered my LA3M. Paid by Paypal a few days ago. All $ amounts in USD for USA shipment. I paid $2,846.25 ($2,750 including shipping plus 3.5% fee for using paypal).

The pricing includes all the hardware to run a stand-alone system. It works out to $100 for the controller, and $250 per unit. If it works out well, Jack said I can order 10 more units without the controller (controller can handle 20 units). I presume that would cost $2,500 + $150 for shipping. Which is the price difference between LA3M and LA6M.

He said they would ship around Feb 18. For those looking for pricing:

LA5U $350 + $40 for dhl express, 300KHS scrypt+10GHS SHA256
1XUSB cell, 1X controller,1X 12V laptop adapter,1Xmini usb cable,1X 5V adapter

LA3M $2600 + $150 for dhl express, 3MHS scrypt+100GHS SHA256.

The miner is USB based so why not just plug the USB hub directly to the pc?  Huh

You can. But, the controller ($100 USD) makes it a stand-alone product. If you had an entire farm of these, having stand-alone systems makes it easier. One goes down, and you don't loose your entire production.

Cuts down on power and no need to have it connected to a PC.  Also each controller can manage 20 devices...so for folks like myself who only bought a 10-pack, i can get 10 more and just add them to the same controller.

I couldn't find a price and how to order a set of 20?

Price for LA3AM (10 of these) was $2750 (including shipping to the US...or that's what I paid back on Feb 10th).  I recall seeing somewhere the pricing for the LA6M (20 of these) and it was just 2 x $2750 --> $5500...memory is a bit dodgy.

PM asiabtc/Jack and he'll give you the exact figures, methods of payment, etc.

Since you're probably familiar with the hardware capabilities, do you know if it will be possible to vary the voltage to the fan, or is the fan connected directly to the 12V power source?

Do the units that have been recently shipped have the new firmware installed?  And if so when will that firmware be release so I can update my beta unit?

Yes, it will be very easy to upgrade existing firmware. Simply navigate to the IP of the controller and click on "Upgrade Firmware", browse for the firmware .bin and click on "Upload".
It will start the flashing process and check if the firmware isn't corrupt. After around 1 min the controller should be flashed and you can just continue as usual.
I will be able to show you a picture of the output after flashing tomorrow.
