Is there a possibility of buying just the components un-assembled? Meaning, just the chips, the PCB, and all the associated capacitors/connectors/resistors, so we do all the soldering ourselves?
Even better, is there an option of just the asic's and the PCB un-assembled so we purchase all the passives and whatnot ourselves and solder it together ourselves??

This may be a possibility. Creating full DIY kits requires a considerable amount of time, and depending on the option chosen for parts sourcing, may not be an option. All requests are being taken into consideration, but ultimately the most cost effective, quickest solution for the majority of the orders will take precedence.

The best way to do this would be to roll the whole thing yourself.  The circuit will be stable long before the chips arrive.  Get a set of boards made for $25 at iteadstudio, order all the parts from Mouser or Digikey and you have a kit.  Someone might even create a BOM at one of these two so you can order in just a few clicks.  It really isn't worth the hassle of assembling kits, the large online component sellers do a much better job for much less.

I don't think anyone is going to write instructions for assembly but perhaps I'm wrong.  If you can mount the ASICs yourself, the rest is a piece of cake.

*edit* I would do this except I don't want to screw up the mounting of the ASICs.  I'm planning on making some K1s by hand with my extra chips if they aren't used up.

heh finally got whitelisted to post Cheesy

My Bitcoins are coming on Wed June 12th. I hope there are 64 chips left for me.

My bad for not finding out about this thread sooner. I have been looking into many ASIC possibilities. I was happy about kncminer until their last announcement now i have written them off.

thanks for all of this Steamboat.

OMG, a KNC escapee! Smiley

Break a leg on the chips - though you might be part of the next batch, things move quite fast so not a real issue.

Fully Assembled Unit:
The fully assembled unit, including all necessary hardware, is $133.5, to be paid in BTC.

Does this price reflect per 16 chip unit?  Or per any amount of chipped unit?

You have to have your own chips or have participated in one of the group buys on this thread. That price is only for assembly with YOUR chips.

On another note Steamboat, I'm assuming that the dollar amount for the assembly (whichever one) service will be based on the Mt. Gox price for the day we send you the BTC?

Or as the time gets closer are you going to just call it 1BTC or 1.1 BTC (or whatever)?

IIRC Steamboat mentioned a few pages back this would be possible. Of course you could always have the PCBs fabbed yourself through OSHPark (or similar) and pickup the components yourself, leaving just the chip order with Steamboat. I personally LOVE OSHPark, the boards are always great quality. $10 a sq/inch for 4 layer boards might seem steep but you get three copies of the board for that price!

FYI BKKcoins does not have final board files available yet but when he does they will appear here most likely: https://github.com/bkkcoins/klondike/tree/master/kicad/k16/plots

Hope I got this in before Batch 5 closes:

I think the countdown is only until he's purchasing -- there's 5000 more chips in the batch (I think)

You're correct, it's the countdown.  I was a little confused by it at first, then Steamboat kindly explained it via email.  Probably would have only added a few more chips had I known, so this will probably suffice for now.

My coins are coming in on Tuesday, then I'll be in for 16 (big spender, right?). Hope batch 5 lasts until then.

I believe B5 started on Friday. Today(roughly) it hit the half way point. 6 days. You might cut it close. Good luck man

Batch 6 around the corner? Grin

No need. First counter of 5000 chips, are down to when he places the order (to shorten the queue for us), then there will be a new counter that closes batch 5.

I have suggested to indicate 5000 chips available until order of batch 5. that later updates into 5000 chips remaining until closing of batch 5.

Let´s see if it changes..

and that being said, im sure he will do even up to a batch 100 if orders keep coming in at this pace.

I was a bit confused and thought Batch 5 had already been bought. I'm in three so I'm familiar with the purchase @ 5k policy. You might be right that the wording could be tweaked a bit to make that more clear. I think it is still a relevant question though, just how far will Steamboat take this? I for one would have gone insane by now trying to get this all sorted, he deserves a beer or 12 for taking it this far!

Ah, I have found this part very confusing...

Yeah, unless you've read at least the first few pages (and not that many people have) it wouldn't be clear that he's placing the order as soon as half of the chips are sold - as driksson said this shortens the wait for us.
Somewhere on the pages was a buried link to the avalon chips that said that they must be ordered in batches of 10k. So - as soon as he gets half of that (5k) he places the order, and while the chips are in transit (may take weeks) he sells the other 5k.

And if you look at the very first post - that's what it currently says:
Quote
Batch 5: Order #10xxx, Expected Purchase week of June 2. Expected delivery date early/mid Aug.
So - they haven't been purchased yet. As the title says at the moment - there are 303 chips left to hit the 5k mark, and at that rate this may happen in the next few days (if not today).

Edit:
Looking at the bitcoin address for batch-5 says currently "Total Received 446.61949639 BTC" which is 5193 chips, so we've probably already passed the 5k mark (even if people mistakenly paid for not just the chips but also including assembly).
