Local or traditional gambling spots are the most common place we see around us. When you know that you don't have money to buy data and gamble online, you can just trek down to the hall and play games and move on. Those are places we visit everyday to play virtual and other sports games. Gambling in the local spots has more funs because after when everyone has place their games then arguments would rise up and everyone in hall would be arguing till all the games played would be over and those club side fans who won would make mockery of the users. And that is how it was from the beginning. Normally people make mockery of others if one party loss and the other win.

If I understood you correctly, something with those characteristics around these parts is Dominoes, after each round the players talk about their mistakes, etc.  It is also seen a lot with Pool, B8-B9. In fact, dominoes are very popular on the Internet.

The older men gamble, but maturely, and when they gamble, they make fun of the games played, and in some cases, they correct themselves while playing.

Is that strange to you? They have nothing to lose at this point and treat the game like a social even which is why they stay there so long laughing and having fun. The game gives them something to do.
There's no tradition of gambling in my country so there are no joints like that where old people sit and have fun. They do it in parks and they often play cards or chess there, but it's not gambling, rather a friendly game. I've noticed that some countries have a culture of gambling, especially in Asia, but in Europe and the US it's much less common and people usually gamble in noisy casinos.

The thought to visit an old gambling spot crosses my mind constantly to be honest. Maybe mostly old folk gather there, but they are of the fun variety. They are hardcore on their card games but also experience a lot of people things through gambling

There is discussions about pretty much anything. From learning your town's chit chat and all the spicy news, to politics and serious maters of all kinds. But the very good thing is that drinks ther are super cheap.  Grin Grin

Have you  ever had the thought of visiting a local gambling spot before, or have you been there before? I had to go there days ago. The place is characterized by old men gamblers and this board game which we call it in our place, is called draft in the local dialect here, some call it Okwe, and others call it different names in their various languages.

I noticed something there, the old men who play this game together always play with fun irrespective of the fact that they gamble, they laugh, talk, and make fun of themselves while they gamble without anyone noticing that they are gambling. Although I have been around them a few times while they play, I never had any idea they gambled. They do that maturely, and you would never understand they do so.

It is never like this when the young ones are playing that game. They always end up shouting match, fighting and quarreling, and making it obvious to people that they are gamblers, which is not appropriate. At first, the environment where they sit to play the game is very rowdy, which is not like that of the older men; they are well-coordinated and mature while playing. This is what the local gambling spot looks like in my country, and it has been going on like that from time to time without any thought of change from the young ones who engage themselves in the game. I have also asked them, just as I did to the older men, but the narrative is quite different from what the older man told me. The younger ones are desperate to get the money, which has made them gamble and forget so soon the tenets and principles of gambling.

The older men gamble, but maturely, and when they gamble, they make fun of the games played, and in some cases, they correct themselves while playing. Despite the fact that they gamble, they point out lapses and errors their counterparts made while playing, laugh over them, and do not mind if money is involved in the game they play.

Have you visited the traditional gambling sport  in your place? How do the traditional gambling games and spots in your country look? Have you gambled the local way?  How was your experience, then?

OP I call relate to your storyline, the game this order men play the English name is Draught, it's been an ancient game that has been played by generations. Basically the game is more of a calculated one, where you focus at every point to know the next move that will be taken by your opponent, so it requires silence and calculative disposition while playing it.

For young gamblers that will be playing it, I think it's more of their youthful exuberance that always influences their resolve while they are on it. Some Young people will ordinarily want to make noise and cause apprehension when they are in such situations,  however it's not all, because some young people of these generation don't really fancy the Draught game too much, unlike the online casino games and online betting that they majorly engage more on.

I am living in country where many things are prohibiting but still we are able to do things which are not allowed like here gambling is not allowed, but we have Horse racecourses, and then we are not allowed to play sports gambling, but many peoples are offering this service through online and offline and I have some experience with playing on both sides like few years back I was working in horse racecourse and many times having betting same happen with soccer and cricket as well which are most popular but recently as I found this online stuff now I never have anything on these local places.
Even now we have few casinos which are offering games which are related to gambling and still this all is illegal because here rules are very sticking about this all. Cheesy Cheesy

If we are both talking about the same thing, then No. I have never gambled in those gambling spots, though I have seen them and I have also pay attention when people to there and gamble. Those are usually common in small towns on in popular neighborhood, away from downtown of the city where it is always busy and full of people doing other things.
Also, when comes to the behavior of people while gambling/betting, according to their age, I would say it is very dependant on the culture they are from and also the relation they have with the other people they are gambling with.

Here in my country I have seen people in their 60s and 70s misbehaving while gambling and being mean to others, disregarding the etiquette of the gambling setting. Most of them misbehave when they are under the influence of alcohol.

I have gotten the impression it is easier for the youngest generations not to feel those places appealing, because of how easy it has become to gamble from the comfort of our homes, so there is no need to walk around to the gambling sport anymore as in previous decades.  Tongue

The description of your visit to a nearby gambling house displays the gambling differences between generations. The old men in your report demonstrate that gambling, although deeply addictive, can still be a leisurely pursuit, while the youth, however, create more noise and chaos than any organized gambling event. It is an expression of various ways and cultures related to gambling within several generations.

In the place of my residency, though the conventional sports may differ, the idea is much the same, wherein individuals participate as players based on their skill levels and gambling mindsets. Some locations could be a lot more muffled and calm, with regular games occurring in a responsible manner, while others are likely to be noisier and laid back.

I have never been in a physical casino like the one you mentioned, but your story allows me to delve into how local traditions and cultural beliefs mold the way people bet. These disparities should be known and valued because there is no correct or standard way of gambling.

As the situation has been described by the OP, people who are older in generation display calmness or more laid back approach as compared to younger ones. And that clearly shows that each generation have their own targets why they are sitting on the table. The older ones are there for entertainment  or companionship and not because they are after for the winnings alone, in which, the younger ones have their eyes mostly on whether they will win or not. And would create trouble if they want to just to get their winnings.

I guess, that's the usual scenario of most traditional gambling spots especially for those oldies who are regulars of that area. They are there to pass the time and more on companionship. They can go for long hours without bothering whether they will go home as a winner or a loser. This is where they will find "happiness" in their remaining years.

Of course, and often, in the area where I live, there are a number of types of traditional gambling that are held.
For example:
* cock gambling.
* buffalo fighting gambling.
* horse racing.
* And poker house.
And many others.

But these four types of gambling are often visited by those who like to do traditional gambling, including me, I also visit these sports gambling places.
What is certain is that of all these types of games, the most exciting for me is buffalo fighting. This gambling has its own humor and challenges for bettors, where they can get entertainment that cannot be compared with others, Last week I bet only one round, the opponent's buffalo fell in one fight, this could bring in a lot of money and fun for me, clearly this is a real challenge that I have ever felt.

This is normal because they already get use to it due to the number of times they are playing it. You will understand the “meh” feeling if you are continuously playing same games for a long time since you will not consider the money anymore and focus only to the happiness brought by companionship.

Yes, We have a billiard spot near my place which we always hangout. We are playing Billiards with bets on it. Sometimes the amount involved is too huge when an outsider comes to our place to gamble with us. The feeling is so intense compared to playing Blackjack with huge bets because you are the one playing using your skills to win while Blackjack just need luck and few clicks.

Have you visited the traditional gambling sport  in your place?

It's difficult to imagine what traditional Gambling  are like, I say this because we first have to have the definition of what Gambling are, according to Wikipedia, we have this definition of Gambling:

How do the traditional gambling games and spots in your country look?

In my country there is no traditional Gambling, but there are many traditional games, such as the most popular one:

Have you gambled the local way?  How was your experience, then?

I never played, I didn't even know that there are traditional Gambling, according to what I researched, Gambling had their first signs of existence in China, of course that doesn't mean that it couldn't have also appeared first in other countries, not yet If you are absolutely sure which country was the first to have Gambling, but if you knew that roulette has existed since 2300 BC, that is many years ago, and when you delve deeper into the emergence of the Gambling, they only talk about games such as cards, dice and slot. You can see more in this article:

https://www.smithfieldtimes.com/2022/11/08/the-evolution-of-gambling/

It's hard to imagine that they have traditional games where money was bet. In my country there is no traditional game where you bet money. years ago I played cards with my friends and parties and we bet money. but when it was traditional games we wouldn't bet money

But gone are the days now, no more playing like this on the streets and somewhat you feel lucky that you were able to see this in your lifetime and get to tell your children about how we play before the advent of internet and online gambling.

No I think such kind of game and trash talking with all the euphoria in board game as such that the op mentioned has gone, they still exist. Street gambling both board games or card is not going away despite the internet that has given birth to casino and games in it. Gambling on the street is an age long kind of neighborhood activities, some organise football competition where they stake on it by the participating teams. So it is just not going away.

These games are still very much active in the community where I reside. I was passing by the street this afternoon and I saw them as usual the elders playing their game and I greeted them. Those games can hardly be abolished or fade away. There is this enthusiasm I see in them whenever they play those games. The joy they share, the fun, the laughter, the superiority they talk about while playing together, the respect they have for each other. Common, it's second to none and the youths can hardly do all these the elders do while playing games amongst themselves.

In truth street gambling is an age-long exercise, but it is still as good as it is back in those days as they usually say that it was one of the best means of engaging with their friends at weekends. It creates unity and coexistence amongst themselves as it has always been the nature or tradition of such game

I have gambled the local way and that's through our neighborhood which is obviously far from the typical physical casinos that we've got. I have entered our physical casinos and they're not really special at all or at least for me I don't see anything special from them. A normal noise that you'd get there, the slots, roulette and the people's noise that I don't find comfortable because I prefer to get into a place that's quiet where I can gamble peacefully or just want to stay quiet for my own safe space and sanity.

But gone are the days now, no more playing like this on the streets and somewhat you feel lucky that you were able to see this in your lifetime and get to tell your children about how we play before the advent of internet and online gambling.
Soon, they're going to be just stories that we're going to tell to our children and grandchildren. Life was amazing in the past but I don't think that they'd be jealous with our generation because they also going to have their own amazing childhood and teenage days until they grow up because for each era, there's the difference that they can enjoy with. So, even if the internet nowadays are the trend and anything can be done with it. The interaction that we're having with the other gamblers, friends and whoever we encounter as we gamble in the streets or wherever is physically, it is priceless and memorable that we'll surely treasure forever.

Once and that was in secret because gambling is a prohibited activity.
Gambling offline and playing traditionally is not fun because there are only a few types of games or only certain games such as 41.
In general, I don't like gambling in traditional places and prefer to gamble online. There are many types of games and they are more fun, especially if they don't create a rowdy atmosphere.
Not many people know because it can be played anywhere as long as internet access is available.

When you are an OG in gambling just like those elderly men, gamble would be done for fun because they have pass through different phases of gambling, and yet they didn't quit. This is because they have understood what gambling is, that it should be for fun, and only little amount of money should be used. This is why they are acting that way that you said. They teach you more on the game as the are playing with you.

I have been able watch them too, what surprised me is that they will even show you the move to make. They are matured gamblers, and they are not after profit, but they do it to have fun as elderly men. Young gamblers are lousy with their bets and most of them gamble for profit.

It is true that the youth are someworth lousy and it is coming from those who gamble often but In the case of the older men to it is never like that they are matured and well experienced in life and as such, do this with wisdom. They play their games with fun and are in good terms with ok me another while gambling. They do not play with the mindset of making profit but rather for fun.

When it comes to corrections, they do that immediately by showing their opponents their lapses while they play in doing that, their opponents learn and if it is a younger person they learn quickly and fast as they can. These are just the difference between the youths and the elders when it comes to gambling. There is this big difference between both generation. Is it because of the exposure or what because I am even thinking that the youths would be more composed and play diligently than the elders but no, the youths will always be the youth they are while the elders do their things their own matured way.

Exactly, it's only the elderly men that gamble on that game, and many of them played it almost on every chance that they got. Honestly they enjoyed playing it everyday, sometimes while walking on the street I see men playing the game and more people watch at them to see the smartest player.
That game it not a game that a player should rush, it's a game of calculations and skills and luck also. Why I add luck is because if you bet you only win when you are lucky but when you are just playing the game without putting your money on it you can use sholl and calculations to win.

Same, I think every country has it's own board game similar to chess, and when I was a little I will see these old men gathered on my corner of the streets, and money on the line playing our local board games. Of course, even if money is on the line, there will still be some sort of fun and trash talking as we can say in modern day. But gone are the days now, no more playing like this on the streets and somewhat you feel lucky that you were able to see this in your lifetime and get to tell your children about how we play before the advent of internet and online gambling.

I know this game and it is really brain storming form of game. I think more like chess game. Op you may have represented it in an image to give your post more understanding so that you get more contribution from non Nigerians gamblers too  Grin

I noticed something there, the old men who play this game together always play with fun irrespective of the fact that they gamble, they laugh, talk, and make fun of themselves while they gamble without anyone noticing that they are gambling.

They have rules that they also follow despite it looking like they laugh over the activities on the game. There is some rule they always introduce, "it is called touch and play"   Grin This means if you touch any of the seeds of the game on your side of the board and in the bid to make a move and you see it will amount to a wrong move, you can't change that move, you must have to move it or play it even if it is to your obvious detriment.

Although I have been around them a few times while they play, I never had any idea they gambled. They do that maturely, and you would never understand they do so.

Lol... You probably a newbie watcher. If you have watched them a long time and stay with them to the beginning of the next round and more rounds you must understand that they are staking money. Either there is someone that they are staking with like escrow or they are exchanging money on themselves. Or they are only counting their winning and losses afterwards balancing it and because they are quite mature and friends in the neighborhood, everything is done in peace. Family men those days don't want neighborhood or their children and wife know they are gambling or gamblers  Grin

It is never like this when the young ones are playing that game. They always end up shouting match, fighting and quarreling, and making it obvious to people that they are gamblers, which is not appropriate. At first, the environment where they sit to play the game is very rowdy,

Youth will always behave like they are. It is what it is.

I have also asked them, just as I did to the older men, but the narrative is quite different from what the older man told me. The younger ones are desperate to get the money, which has made them gamble and forget so soon the tenets and principles of gambling.

It is not really about desperate for money, maybe show of juvenile and to make a statement of superiority in the game.

The older men gamble, but maturely, and when they gamble, they make fun of the games played, and in some cases, they correct themselves while playing. Despite the fact that they gamble, they point out lapses and errors their counterparts made while playing, laugh over them, and do not mind if money is involved in the game they play.

Correction is part of the beauty and fun of the game. At this point of correction , the game is temporarily on standstill and probably the most senior and experienced player tries to show what the other player who made the error who have played to outsmart the other players move. Actually, this correction or show of best move after the error was made is not only done by the best or most senior player but any one who saw the move and understood it. However, there can only be such interference if it is permitted depending on the rule adopted by both players or people involved in the game. Usually, when the stake is very high, the rules are very stringent and violation could attract penalty. So it is a very sweet game and the older people respect themselves of course, a father would not want to be disrespected unlike the youth.

Have you visited the traditional gambling sport  in your place? How do the traditional gambling games and spots in your country look? Have you gambled the local way?  How was your experience, then?

Sure did gamble on that in the past. Quite a good experience too.
