The place is characterized by old men gamblers and this board game which we call it in our place, is called draft in the local dialect here, some call it Okwe, and others call it different names in their various languages.
I know this game and it is really brain storming form of game. I think more like chess game. Op you may have represented it in an image to give your post more understanding so that you get more contribution from non Nigerians gamblers too
I noticed something there, the old men who play this game together always play with fun irrespective of the fact that they gamble, they laugh, talk, and make fun of themselves while they gamble without anyone noticing that they are gambling.
They have rules that they also follow despite it looking like they laugh over the activities on the game. There is some rule they always introduce, "it is called touch and play"
This means if you touch any of the seeds of the game on your side of the board and in the bid to make a move and you see it will amount to a wrong move, you can't change that move, you must have to move it or play it even if it is to your obvious detriment.
Although I have been around them a few times while they play, I never had any idea they gambled. They do that maturely, and you would never understand they do so.
Lol... You probably a newbie watcher. If you have watched them a long time and stay with them to the beginning of the next round and more rounds you must understand that they are staking money. Either there is someone that they are staking with like escrow or they are exchanging money on themselves. Or they are only counting their winning and losses afterwards balancing it and because they are quite mature and friends in the neighborhood, everything is done in peace. Family men those days don't want neighborhood or their children and wife know they are gambling or gamblers
It is never like this when the young ones are playing that game. They always end up shouting match, fighting and quarreling, and making it obvious to people that they are gamblers, which is not appropriate. At first, the environment where they sit to play the game is very rowdy,
Youth will always behave like they are. It is what it is.
I have also asked them, just as I did to the older men, but the narrative is quite different from what the older man told me. The younger ones are desperate to get the money, which has made them gamble and forget so soon the tenets and principles of gambling.
It is not really about desperate for money, maybe show of juvenile and to make a statement of superiority in the game.
The older men gamble, but maturely, and when they gamble, they make fun of the games played, and in some cases, they correct themselves while playing. Despite the fact that they gamble, they point out lapses and errors their counterparts made while playing, laugh over them, and do not mind if money is involved in the game they play.
Correction is part of the beauty and fun of the game. At this point of correction , the game is temporarily on standstill and probably the most senior and experienced player tries to show what the other player who made the error who have played to outsmart the other players move. Actually, this correction or show of best move after the error was made is not only done by the best or most senior player but any one who saw the move and understood it. However, there can only be such interference if it is permitted depending on the rule adopted by both players or people involved in the game. Usually, when the stake is very high, the rules are very stringent and violation could attract penalty. So it is a very sweet game and the older people respect themselves of course, a father would not want to be disrespected unlike the youth.
Have you visited the traditional gambling sport in your place? How do the traditional gambling games and spots in your country look? Have you gambled the local way? How was your experience, then?
Sure did gamble on that in the past. Quite a good experience too.
