Draft has been a local game for the elderly in my country for a long time. I grew up watching my old folks enjoy that game alot. They just sit down under the tree and do their thing.Local gambling store are always like that especially the ones you mentioned. Though the youths as we know are very rowdy most times when it comes to gambling and some are irresponsible to the extent that they fight over their loss. I've visited and seen some elders playing the local gambling but it's always very peaceful and they seem to be enjoying the games very much. There's always a difference between the elderly and the young and it's no new thing that they would behave more matured. They don't always put money like that ones I've seen, they just play for fun and enjoy the games.

I have seen older people gambling, and playing these games that you have mentioned, but not all gathered in one place. If there was a place like that around me, I would never know because I am not sure I will be very interested in regularly visiting a place where only old people come to gamble, I could get older faster.

If I start staying only in the company of old gamblers, I know there will be a lot to learn from them, but not where I will always want to be.

In the province of my wife, old men and women are playing traditional card games and I could say the same about how they react after the game. They point to the mistakes done by the other player because there's a strategy where you will let the next player win so that the pot won't be taken by the other player. A player needs to win twice to get the pot so it's like the other two will try to give each other some good cards that they think will be needed by the other so if he/she wins the game, the pot will grow up to the point where they are only aiming to win it all.
At first, I didn't understand that but as I watched them play for hours, that's when I realized what was happening. After each game, they will laugh or talk about what happened while the cards are being shuffled before the next game starts.
It's true, if it's the younger people who are playing, it's a selfish game, they are only there to win and doesn't care about prolonging the battle to increase the pot amount.

You're acting surprised but I'm not at all. What do you expect from a generation that sees gambling as a means of get rich quick? These old men see gambling as a leisure activity that should be enjoyed as a social and intellectual gathering, not too focused on the money making aspects of it.

I noticed that the society in general has shift attention to instant gratification and focus on materials and money possession. This has also affect every aspect of our lives including gambling. It is the reason our focus nowadays is solely on the outcome and not even bother about the process. I think it's same experience everywhere because nothing is different from my side here too though, you may hardly see one where old men gathered nowadays.

No. I prefer just the online gambling sites most. I have only visited offline gambling shops before and nothing more than that. In my town, we do not have land based casinos and that makes me to make all my casino gambling to be online. Also if it is sport, I prefer online sites the most. About the one that you are saying, I cannot have time for something like that unless I am just playing draft with my family members or friends and money is not going to be involved which makes it not to be gambling.

When you are an OG in gambling just like those elderly men, gamble would be done for fun because they have pass through different phases of gambling, and yet they didn't quit. This is because they have understood what gambling is, that it should be for fun, and only little amount of money should be used. This is why they are acting that way that you said. They teach you more on the game as the are playing with you.

I have been able watch them too, what surprised me is that they will even show you the move to make. They are matured gamblers, and they are not after profit, but they do it to have fun as elderly men. Young gamblers are lousy with their bets and most of them gamble for profit.

The age of these gamblers affects their disposition or reactions. Some youths are inexperienced so you will always have a rowdy environment which is filled with arguments and sometimes fights. Some of these youths gamble more than they can afford to lose and see gambling as their main source of income which makes them react negatively to losses. Young gamblers exhibit lots of youthful exuberant and this will always manifest in their approach towards gambling.

But these elderly gamblers are experienced. Most of them have had different encounters in gambling so they have vast knowledge of how the game works. Some of them might have overcome gambling addiction in time past so they are well experienced. I have seen these elderly men playing games like draft and ludo and it is really an enjoyable place to hang out. You will see that they are gambling entirely for fun and not the money. This is because there is less anxiety and worries as they play these games. You will only know that they are gambling at the end of the game when the winner will raise the board to collect his win that was kept there.

Have you  ever had the thought of visiting a local gambling spot before, or have you been there before? I had to go there days ago. The place is characterized by old men gamblers and this board game which we call it in our place, is called draft in the local dialect here, some call it Okwe, and others call it different names in their various languages.


I noticed something there, the old men who play this game together always play with fun irrespective of the fact that they gamble, they laugh, talk, and make fun of themselves while they gamble without anyone noticing that they are gambling. Although I have been around them a few times while they play, I never had any idea they gambled. They do that maturely, and you would never understand they do so.

It is never like this when the young ones are playing that game. They always end up shouting match, fighting and quarreling, and making it obvious to people that they are gamblers, which is not appropriate. At first, the environment where they sit to play the game is very rowdy, which is not like that of the older men; they are well-coordinated and mature while playing. This is what the local gambling spot looks like in my country, and it has been going on like that from time to time without any thought of change from the young ones who engage themselves in the game. I have also asked them, just as I did to the older men, but the narrative is quite different from what the older man told me. The younger ones are desperate to get the money, which has made them gamble and forget so soon the tenets and principles of gambling.

The older men gamble, but maturely, and when they gamble, they make fun of the games played, and in some cases, they correct themselves while playing. Despite the fact that they gamble, they point out lapses and errors their counterparts made while playing, laugh over them, and do not mind if money is involved in the game they play.
