The question is - can you politely correct someone's spelling without being thought of as a troll?

I believe the answer to that question is no. I have tried in the past and failed many times. I am a grammar nazi as well, but NO! I cant correct people's grammar!

It's been said, "dont be a dick." :p

I think it's based on the context. If they accidentally missed an apostrophe and used "its" instead of "it's," mayyyyybe you should just let it slide.

But if thery're like mahsing on a kedsyp[board it's probably fine to correct them even if they get pissy

Or of course you can tell the drunk typers to go be drunk elsewhere.. this occurred on a thread I was posting in earlier... It was quite hilarious.

A few days back, I suggested this feature: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/grammar-nazi-option-627768

Honestly, I think it's a great idea to implement into the new forum software.

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Holy shit! Thats a great idea! Why wasn't I made aware of that earlier!?! Is there any progress being made on it, such as development?

When the new forum software comes out, I'm fairly sure this will be part of it. So far, everyone seems to support the stackexchange method of doing things (where the OP chooses the modified text or not).

Do you know when the new forum software is coming out? If so I hope it is implemented soon so I don't have a mental breakdown from reading these damn posts xD

loose/lose mix ups are a result of people relying on spell check when writing and being only semi-literate to begin with. same goes for the their/there/they're mistakes. go read a book kids, you're making "Idiocracy" look like a work of non-fiction.

I don't know whether it's already been mentioned but 'whether', 'wether' and 'weather' get mixed up a lot. I sometimes slip up on the first two.

Apparently a 'wether' is a castrated sheep haha.

Another good one is when there are blatant errors in a job posting. Way to present yourself well... if you don't take yourself seriously, how do you expect a prospective employee to do so? A friend of mine was asking me for advice about applying to a job and I just couldn't get over how many issues there were in the posting, and this was a large company not like some tiny startup.

How about the difference between its and it's? Grin

Also, they're, their, there

How to remember:

They're --> Simply short for they are.

Their --> Remember an heir receives money, their money.

There --> A location, remember here is like there.

Another one that drives me insane is when people make add an 's' onto words where it does not belong. I forget what the technical term for this is, but for example "I found some informations about..." I see that one on forums fairly often.

A few regular grammatical things that make me cringe every time I see them used:

- Loose instead of Lose
- Lagg instead of Lag
- Your instead of You're
- many more I can't think of off the top of my head.

My most hated reply to this is:

"Lol it's the internet, who cares?" like somehow typing words on the internet invalidates the use of grammar or spelling.
