If you don't want to share you email on this account, , you can create a new account with a fresh email and use the account for reporting spam.
That’s unnecessary. I know some people do not want to hurt their account with forum drama so they create alt accounts to make serious accusations against other users. Reporting posts for spam or off-topic is different, only the mods can see your email and they won’t expose their reports to the next user. So there is nothing to be afraid of.

I saw an annoying spam and I wanted to use the report function and I was told that my email address will be revealed to the moderator when I report a spam. I was temporarily deterred. Am I going to be receiving emails from a moderator as a follow up for a report I made?
I think the report system should be simple and if possible automated in order not to discourage anyone from reporting obvious spams. What's the essence of revealing my email?

I don't  have any idea why the email is usually being shared with moderators before you can report a spam port but I know it doesn't cause you any harm to do so and from my experience, I have reported many post but yet have not receive any follow up email from any moderator concerning the post I have reported.

@Faisal2202 you made the same post on the thread twice, yesterday and today. I don’t think it’s a glitch because the time difference between the two posts is over 24hrs. Probably you wrote the post on a note app and saved it to post later.…dunno.  Whatever the case may be, it’s only right that you delete one of the posts.
Oops I did not notice, actually the post section was still open on my device I thought I wrote it but did not posted, so I hit post even though it gave an error. I opened the thread again, then copied the data and pasted I but did not come to remember that I already said this one. Thanks for noticing. I will delete it.

I think I received such a warning prompt last year too which scared me, but I am not sure anymore (this brain is full of many thoughts Cheesy), if at all, maybe once because I majorly report topics to be moved to the right section rather than reporting those who might be considered spamming, if a post is not good in look, I move to the next, no time to waste.

Nevertheless, your concern is genuine and if the forum could support true privacy, I don't think such a thing should happen. If at all it would happen, maybe the admin alone should know the email and not the moderators, after all, we opened the forum with our email address and whether we like it or not, they already know it. However, no one's email has been revealed or spammed to date which is a layer of trust as far as I am concerned.

It seems he meant 25 posts reported as "good" because I've reported 41 posts with 97% accuracy, but the reports indicator isn't yet activated. There's a chance if my good report is only 20 with 1 bad and rest of them were remain unhandled.

You can read what Halab posted about it.

Also know that if your report is having 97% accuracy, it means out of the 41 posts that you reported, 39 or 40 posts are likely marked as good. Although this is just a calculation of good versus bad report. I think nothing is done to unhandled reports.

Here are some of the responses of moderators/staff in an older thread regarding the same issue:

I can't see the user's email whether it is in reports or in their profile. I'm not sure about global mods though, it might be different for them.

This function hasn't worked for a long time. You can ignore this phrase (Please note that your email address will be revealed to the moderators if you use this.). It's just that theymos hasn't deleted it yet. Moderators process tens of thousands of reports every month. Imagine what their inboxes would be like Smiley

I did a little search in the Staff section, and for the record the ability to send an email for each report was removed in January 2018.

So if you did a report in 2017 or earlier, it's possible that a mod has your email address somewhere. But if I believe this answer from a mod (I won't name him Smiley) following this change, you don't risk a lot :
Quote
I had a filter set up as well though I recently changed it to move all the messages to the trashcan. Guess that's no longer needed.

Right, so the reason why is likely this is a default Simple Machines Forum implementation, and just wasn't addressed until a couple of years ago. Although, it's probably best to assume that the email you have registered with will be seen, and to be cautious with that, since the forum could be attacked, and data leaked, like a few years ago or simply admins might be able to see your email. The good news is you can prevent the former by changing your email now if it connects you in anyway to your meatspace identity.

It's a default SMF feature, which has been explained has since been removed. For additional confirmation, I don't see anyone's email when they report.

So, it seems like that phrase saying your email will be revealed to moderators for submitting the report is outdated and that doesn't happen anymore. Even if it does and moderators can see your email when you report a post, like everyone else suggested it already, you should use an email address that is new and isn't connected to anything else if you are insecure about the email address attached to your account if it's an important one.

About receiving emails for making reports, I have never received an email from any moderator for reporting posts. So that doesn't happen.

This is the first time I am hearing that email would be revealed when the user reports a spam post. I have also reported some few spams and I have not seen such information. OP if you see such again please screenshot it and post the image here for us to see if really what you are saying is correct or it is a new development. Your email is very far from this.
...Am I going to be receiving emails from a moderator as a follow up for a report I made?
No you won't receive any email as a reminder or notification from any moderator or from the forum admin himself. And the forum reporting of spam system is very simple. Probably the mistake is from your side.

You can see Your report history after about ~300 reports, you will get a list with the status of each report.
Why are people posting that it is 300 reports that the good/bad/unhandled reports indicator will be activated? I guess that is how it was in the past? According to Xal0lex which is a moderator on this forum, he posted that only 25 reported posts are enough for people to start seeing the good/bad/unhandled reports indicator.

You're not talking about the same thing:
25 good reports : you see your stats on reports (good/bad/unhandled)
300 good reports : you see the history of your reports.

so unhandled still counts as an accurate judge because if it doesn't then your report that ain't bad is around 39.
I thought it was either good or bad, never knew there was an option for unhandled.
Reports are either good or bad or unhandled. Unhandled reports do not count as good/bad reports, it only means the report is in the queue and has not been dealt with.

I've been meaning to do a detailed write up on my reporting effectively thread on when unhandled reports are actually the logical way of handling a report. Just haven't got around to it yet. It's on my to do list for this year Cheesy.
Maybe it’s time for that thread @Welsh

Well just a report away from touching the magic 25, so would see how it plays out.
Knowing this forum now, it's not going to be hard to find a post or user That needs reporting before the day(forum time)  runs out.
Knowing where ones report was wrong could really help in brushing skill and getting better at reporting dirts.

I did not receive any email after reporting. But I am confused why this is happening in your case.
He didn't receive any email, he is just hesitant to report a post because in the text it says that email is revealed to mods in that case.

Yep, that's how it was for many years and tbh I didn't even know about that change, that only 25 reportd are needed now to get acces to report history. Good chance btw.

Does this mean the moderators do not use the emails for anything? How then is the issue of report abuse handled? Because anyone can decide to report a post without any good reason. No feedback from the moderators might not let people know when they are reporting for the wrong reasons. I don't know if I'm wrong.
You get to see your report history after you have made a number of good reports. I got mine after about 200 good reports. It's a good feature to have because you get to see your entire post history, the ones marked good, bad, and the unhandled reports. This makes reporting easier for members because the report history is like a feedback from the mods. It is far better than seeing just this on your report page and not knowing which posts were considered bad or handled:

Report abuse is not really much of a problem. There is no benefit in trying to abuse reports except annoying the mods and wasting some of their time, but this does not benefit the abuser.

No feedback from the moderators might not let people know when they are reporting for the wrong reasons. I don't know if I'm wrong.
After 300 good reports, you can see exactly which of your reports were marked good, bad or unhandled. Before then you can see only the number of good, bad and unhandled reports you have. You should not bother much about the percentage of good reports you have, if you are reporting honestly, you are contributing to the community.

I have reported more than 3500 posts but I have not received any message from moderators before regarding the reported post or posts.

According to this staff, it was been removed in January 2018, but the administrators haven't adjust the descriptions.
2018 is quite long time for changes like this to be effected to avoid misleading members

I think this is the main reason of revealing emails so that only valid forum users will be reporting. Without email collection, there could be frivolous reports or even a bot attack on the reporting system in order to mare it.
This makes some sense.

What's the essence of revealing my email?
There may be some reasons unknown to us why the system is programmed that way to reveal our email in a spam report. Besides, it could have been done without we been told that our email could be reveal, so I think it's fair enough that way as you'll have to decide for yourself how important between reporting a post is to you and having your email revealed...

.  but as Helena Yu said email will not be shared with Mods as this rule has been changed since 2018.
Since 2018 and it's still showing that message, why haven't the admin done something about making sure we don't get such message in reporting a post if the rules has been changed.

-snip-
Thanks for sharing this even if I don't report too much and I never noticed that my email will be shared with moderators too even if it will be shared I don't care as its just an email I'm using only for this forum and not using it for something else. So if any of the moderator wans to go rouge can't do a harm by just knowing the email address. But still this also eliminates the threat (which was not a threat in first place haha).

You are right the description should be changes so questions like these won't arrive, changing the description there is not a big deal.

I did not receive any email after reporting. But I am confused why this is happening in your case.
He is not saying he is receiving some king of email instead he is asking why his email will be revealed to the moderators when he will report but as Helena Yu said email will not be shared with Mods as this rule has been changed since 2018.
