so "mouse only" mode for merits would help out us "mouse only" desktop folks.

I think the rate of 1s are quite much when it comes to sending merit so the 1 as initial value to be cool but on mobile, it will still be prone to errors which is +1 to "0" errors.... not too bad though. If possible for PC/desktop users with using  1 as init value then it's saves more time and maybe mobile should be left with blank  input  space or any placeholder that fits for it.
Unless  if we could have maybe a suggested input value aligned beneath for users to pick... probably from one to ... most used  input values  with alot of spacing between each  suggested values  for fat fingered users.

At a time I thought having seen that zero (0) in the leaving merit box is irrelevant but I came to understand that it's still necessary that it it displays that the user has inputted zero (0) yet which would be invalid to merit other users posts respectively.
I think it was a reminder that zero (0) as a figure means nothing equivalent to blank space which requires a figure bigger than the zero (0) before you can merit posts.
As for deleting the zero (0) before leaving merits, it's actually irrelevant but I'm one user who also deletes it off before proceeding to input a figure of merit for a post. Lol

this has, on occasion, resulted in posts i would of merited being passed by because while it may be meritable its not meritable enough for me to actually get the keyboard out. since i am lazy af.

That's too lazy of you, it's hilarious.  Grin

Anyway, I do agree that even if we are not lazy or have to skip posts because of it, having a '1' instead of a '0' in the field would make things easier because most of the time, we send only 1 merit to normal merit-worthy posts unless it's a special case where we might need to remove the digit that is already populated and write our own.

Obviously not a big deal though. Perhaps, activities in the forum requires a lot of carefulness, if everything is made very easy for us here there gonna be a lot of mistakes. Deleting the zero and inserting the numbers of merit we want to give a user shouldn't be stressful at all IMO.

If you are a fat fingered cell phone person it is hard to get it right.

I think I gave 10 twice 20 once and 30 once.

I no longer give merits via the cell phone.

Being 67 years old hand twitches are more common so it would be nice to have something else in the box.

Very understandable sir, Perhaps with the same complaint being made by a lot of users who have made replies on this thread, it is obvious that the zero is not necessary, it can even be left blank after all.

User who received those 10x merits would be like; ( Damn that was a hell of quality post I wrote right there Grin Grin). Anyways that's quite true not only for old people too hand twitching is also a thing I've seen in a couple of young people. Anyways I think you could reduce the problem more if you made use of a wider touch screen probably a tab. For example an iPhone mini will only make things worse (said this because you seem to be an apple person because literally all your screen shots came from a Mac)

Plus if you make use of a smartphone I suggest you surf the forum without any mobile phone extensions so it's pretty much very easy for you to either zoom in or zoom out on the text bar where you are going to input the number of merits you wish to send.

I didn't notice it until you said it. Yeap, I delete 0 every time and write the number I want instead.
This can be fixed, I don't see anything wrong with it.
But I questioned whether I should not be so lazy to delete 0 and write 1 or another number. Well, it didn't bother me, but I can imagine there are a lot of users who are bothered by it, I can understand them.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who is a little bit annoyed with that zero being there for no good reason (even though I am not a merit source and don't share that much merit) and often asked myself why is it even there.

Anyway, I would definitely like to see it gone.

for us desktop readers prepopulating with "1" would be nice as right now while reading the forum i need just a mouse to read but i need the mouse and keyboard to merit. and this has, on occasion, resulted in posts i would of merited being passed by because while it may be meritable its not meritable enough for me to actually get the keyboard out. since i am lazy af.

Now tell me: who are those lazy Merit sources you're talking about?

Ey ey LoyceV, we don't want to see a Superhero fight here. We have Marvel Studio for that.

He already replied to you, so I guess you understand what he was talking about. It seems like there is some support and some opposition as well. But I guess most people will agree that if theymos keep it blank, there will be no problem for anyone. But if he keeps 1 instead, then it will be harder for some of us, and easy for some of us. To make it equal, theymos could leave the box blank. But I am almost certain that the admin does not care about these little things.

You can find complaints for every solution. The easiest would be if the field is empty and you enter the number(s) of merits you want to send. If it stays at 0, you can just add a digit after it and send merits without issues. If the 0 changed to a 1, then everyone who sends 2 or more merits per transaction would have to delete the 1 and enter x instead. It becomes a bit more user-friendly for one group at the expense of another.

Imho setting 1 there would be worse than what we have now.

I've been just writing 1 (or more!) behind that 0 for quite some time; actually when I click the edit box the auto-fill shows me quite a list, all beginning with 0 Smiley If this will change I will always have to remove the 1 if I want to award more than 1 sMerit.

If it can be set up to have special buttons for a few values or at least for 1, it won't hurt, but changing the current behavior needs careful thinking.

This is really not a big deal, but it is one of those things that takes an extra second or two of my time whenever I want to leave someone merit. 98% of the time I spend on this site is on my phone these days, and having to tap in the merit box and move the cursor to the right side and then delete the zero takes some time. If thousands of people are doing this regularly, it could be quite a waste of man hours. I thought I complained about this before but maybe not so I’m bringing it up (possibly again).

Why does the merit field pre-populate with a zero? Is this needed? Couldn’t it be left blank? Is everyone deleting this zero every time they leave merit like I am?
Removing zero don't take much time either I am on Desktop or on Smartphone I can easily remove the zero as you can too but yeah I don't give too much merits and If I try to understand the situation from your end like if you are giving too much merits to other members then removing the zero everytime must be a headache for you I hope some patch fixer (a name should be given to these dudes who write code and release patches to admin so he could install them).

Although if there would be no zero like the field left blank the forum will face no problem at all it will only say invalid amount like it is saying now. I hope your request will be heard by patch fixers  Wink

Dude, I have like 1300 merits to send right now and getting more daily. Anything to make handing that out easier should be looked at.

And i assume the 1300 smerits can't be sent in a single day, Perhaps as for merit sources they can just request for a feature whereby as they are reading through threads and replies they finds merit worthy, they can just be ticking them one after another and afterwhich send the number of merits they want to give each users at once, sounds like a better idea donno  Cool

Actually, I have been deleting the zero before sending out merit to a post I find quality, but after seeing your thread I have to send merit to  you without removing the zero and it was successful.
If you think that removing the zero before sending merit/s would be stressful by you, then you also need to consider sending Smerit/s without removing the zero. Perhaps, the only thing that would be risky to do is adding any number of your choice before the zero. However, I do not think that everyone has been removing the zero before sending merits. Some might have tried it long time ago.

I also had this question when I first sent someone merit from my account. When I send merit, it showed in front of me, then I saw that it can be edited or cut, you can put any number you want, select how many merits to send and then send it. Although my first thought was why there is zero or why zero is given. After seeing everything, it seems that they have set up the system in that way, when everyone comes here to send merit, it will be zero.

Why does the merit field pre-populate with a zero? Is this needed? Couldn’t it be left blank? Is everyone deleting this zero every time they leave merit like I am?
I definitely agree with what you said because it would be better if it starts from zero so it makes no sense to mention zero. If it is not there, then there is no need to spend time to select as many as you want. Many people will like zero and many will not like it like you didn't like zero like I didn't like it and yes whenever I go to send the qualifications I just delete the blanks like you and then select the desired qualification and send it.

Perhaps powerglove himself also discussed this and made some suggestions in this thread A small merit-sending UI tweak But basically I don't think he had solved it yet. So it's not a new complaint, lots of people suggested different solutions but it hasn't been considered maybe it's not a big deal.
Yes powerglove himself posted about it on November 3rd, 2023. I saw a post called A small merit-sending UI tweak and there were many suggestions. There was a maxim that it was not that big of a deal, and there were more comments than I could understand.

But today I will share with you a new experience which I have not done before. Maybe when all of you send merit, maybe all of you edit and delete this void and then select and send merit as you wish. Today I sent merit with merit number with zero and noticed one thing that after going to send merit I didn't edit zero again without editing zero then I sent merit with one number I wanted to see the matter whether the merit is sent or not but I see After getting zero I was selecting one after cent I saw one minute sent.

See this I can see a merit is sent even after selecting 01 but here my question is if I send merit by putting double number after zero then in what way or how many will be sent suppose I send 011 merit sent then zero will be sent then how many merits will be sent? I want to clear this matter. thank you.

I think some people just leave the zero there (as in, as long as you're entering something after it, then it's a harmless prefix, but, that habit also leads to the mistake of sometimes being on the wrong side of the zero, and then accidentally sending 10 times more merit than you intended).
It happened to me twice. But only in less than 0.1% of my Merit transactions, involving less than 0.2% of my sent Merit. So it's not a big deal.
It might not seem like a big deal for sure although, mistakes like these could be easily addressed by taking out the integer while letting every input be on intent and not having to remind yourself every time to put your number ahead of the zero to make the prefix have no meaning. It’s just a maths that might not turn up right always. A lot of users might not see the need for having to work on mobile and don’t have that much merit to send.

Merit sources are incentivized to give out all their merits. This has led to lazy merit sources dishing out more merits per post. It also makes it easier to circle merit with your friends while leaving less tracks. I think maybe if it were easier to give out just 1 merit, we’d see less concentration in merit circles and more merits going to more users.
So at post #14 you finally say what this is really about. The made-up drama in your head again. Go complain to theymos about it:
Seeking to address this, I don’t think ought to be the bone of contention here as, it wouldn’t change nothing since, it’s all intentional.

Merit sources are like males. Cursed with a dick and balls. They need to get them balls emptied everyonce in a while otherwise bad things will happen. Like they could lose their balls -i mean merit sourcing capabilities. We don’t want that. Nobody wants that. We want to stay as healthy as we can and keep spreading our seeds -i mean merits in every women -i mean forum user we can mate -i mean merit.

Still doing 100 pushups a day? All those excessive merits have to go somewhere

Merit sources do exactly as intended if they empty their source:
It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.
