what is the meaning of merit guys .. i'm a newbie here. Thanks

Required activity:

Legendary: random in the range 775-1030

This user has only 868 activity. He can become a Legendary in the next period or maybe only at the 1022 activity mark. He got 1000 merits by default because theymos thought it was not fair to only give 500 merits to Hero Members who were in the 775-1030 range and could become Legendary at any time.

So how can I gain 90 merit just to rank up to Full Member..? That means I need 90 unique people to randomly select me out of the thousands of posts they see a day just to rank up? I was under the impression that activity was the only thing that determined rank, which I was thankful for since I could rank up by Feb. 14. Turns out that after going to 126 activity, I get a private message from a user explaining to me that I cannot receive Full Member rank without 100 damn merit. Are you serious? And this was introduced 11 days ago. My fucking luck.

I get that it is to reduce spam and increase the quality of posts, but holy shit how am I going to get 90 people to give me merit when there are literally thousands of people posting every single day? Doesn't matter if I post extremely high quality posts or not.

EDIT: Also why is the merit jump so dramatic from Member to Full Member? 60 activity and 10 merit is required for Member rank, but 120 activity and 100 merit is required for Full Member? Activity is increased by 2x, but the merit is increased by 10x? That makes 0 sense.

Is this a bug ? This user has more than enough merits and activity to be a legendary member but his current rank is still hero member.

That user I linked above was just one of them I think there's more of them who have 1000 merits and 770+ activity who aren't legendary.

I agree. Just that. I must explain again why with another worlds?

So what's the policy on a coin dev giving 20 merit to the post where his appointed PR flack introduces himself? That sounds like merit abuse to me, no? So as to not unfairly impugn anyone in case this is kosher, if a mod PMs me I'll provide a link to the post for him/her to evaluate.

Don't be disappointed, really, it could always be worse 250 merits are a lot of course, but not impossible, it's just the question of time, but not 10 years...
You can check my activities, I'm 5 activity points away from having a chance to rank up to be a Legendary but still missing nearly 500 merits. Problem? No. I was expected to become a legendary sometime this year. Merit system kicked in, so maybe next year, that's life.
You are a senior, so you have all the chances to enjoy the benefits of your rank, the forum and of course bitcoin.
If you make quality posts and somehow you won't get merited, you can still search the forum, there are several threads where high ranked members are helping those who are eligible for the merits, based on the post history and post quality. And be patient, that really helps

Actually I could have been Legendary myself if only I had spammed a lot in these years - we all spam at a certain point, you can't explain in every post the sense of life. There are also "shitposts" like "hey I love that and I love this".

Into the Italian section of this forum there are people complaining about legendary sending merit, frankly I take it for granted, I'm starting to dislike the system and I won't investigate any further since I will just give up "giving my best".
Also I don't like ... licking boots with "hey this sssssMerit rocks".

I'm confused on one thing though. There is this "leitmotiv" going around that merit is going to kill spam.
I find this statement an open defying of logic.
Merit, as it has been show, is just a "like" system, à la facebook, with a substantial difference that accumulating points (that reminds me the points you get on the supermarket to buy a new set of pots or something like that) will make you, eventually, rank up.
In any way that won't prevent spammers from spamming - low ranks can still post, maybe not as fast as they want, but still they can post.
And that won't stop anyone else from posting what is called "shitposts", since there is no "de-merit" (oh crap, now I'm starting to give bad ideas to the administration...).

So, again, what's the point exactly for this ssssMerit system? (I have to make an avatar with Gollum saying "my sssssssMerit", too much fun...)
I'm not being rethorical here. I honestly don't get why the administration had the urge to add something more than just activity.
And activity alone is sufficient to speed down fake accounts.

My rank is legendary, and I've tried to distribute what sMerit I get to posts by newer members that strike me as interesting, constructive, or at least well thought out.

Mind you, the system is new and it's NOT habitual to me yet, but I have made the effort. And it appears to me that I am not alone in this.

Bitching by itself will not get you merit, that I can almost guarantee. Bitching with a point, or sharp wit, very well might

Yeah, sure. That's why legendary are sending each other merits, not sharing with anyone else.

In the meantime don't hold your breath. You won't be ranking up any time soon and neither will I.

The system is just like Finale exam. At the last of every year we have to attend an exam for getting promotion to the next class. if you don't study hard you will not pass on the exam and you will not get promotion to the higher class. Because of this we had to stady hard so that we can pass the exam. The merit system is just like this, If you don't post good/quality post you will not get merit by any one.If you don't get merit your rank will not upgrad and upgrading rank is important and its valuable. so for this you have to worke hard and keep making good quality post.

I think it is worth giving some time to read posts getting highest number of merits. I do not think so much merits are distributed in different sections that we need to have separate lists for each one.

Merit is the dream of all dividing the soul of the coming rank up of the members. Piercing the heart of the eager. Broke the mind of simpletons. Rebuking the shits but lights up the inner core. Hear folks the shouts of merit FAIR or UNFAIR side by side of this corner. Merit sounds COOL but the people FALL. Arguing the silent killer/life giver (merit/rank up) of what, why, how, and what if can be find almost everywhere. Hope merit will be settled.

I hope I contribute to this topic.

It would be nice if we can get a merit menu like "Last merit post" and"Top merited posts for last 24h" for every section and subsection. So everyone can check the top merited posts in off-topic section for example, then you have more control on how merit is distributed. I know that we have already top and last merited posts in the whole forum but I think it won't be a bad idea to have control on the local sections also.
