Import from the US in bulk (whatever that means), those ebay prices sound insane.  Or maybe wait another month or 2 for used 5xxx cards to come online.

as others have said, 6XXX series if you want to buy several rather than pick up the odd 5XXX when they come available.

6770s get 200-230Mhash from about £75

6850s are £100

6870s are £120

those give the best Mhash/£

you might be able to get some second hand for cheaper too

As I said, what would you get if the only thing that mattered was MH/$ based on UK prices etc.

Importing from the US in bulk might be an option though.

I always thought the 6xxx series are much worse than the 5xxx series because of less shaders and crappy VLIW4 not VLIW5 like the 5xxx with SDK 2.1 and downclocked memory.

Bullshit spread by individuals who forget to shut up when they have no idea what they're talking about.

A hd6770 (juniper-xt) is basically nothing more than a re-branded 5770 with some minor bios tweaks completely orthogonal to mining. So are 68xx cards (barts).
VLIW4 starts with cayman (hd6950).

Yes, 6870's are actually quite efficient miners and are often overlooked. They are cheap, low-power, and overclock well. It is not a problem getting 300Mhash/s out of a 6870, and it won't fry eggs while doing it.

6950s and 6970s are faster overall (350Mhash/s for a 6950), but they are quite a bit more expensive and use a lot more power to get those rates. They are not as efficient from a $/Mhash or $/W perspective compared to a 6870.

There is a difference in shared count but nothing as drastic as people make it sound.

EDIT:: I was asked to post an example
At stock clocks:
hd 5850: 725 MHz * 1440 SP = 1,044,000
hd 6870: 900 MHz * 1120 SP= 1,008,000

The stock 6870 is about 3,5% weaker. That's not actually a bad choice, especially considering that it can be purchased new with full manufacturer's warranty.
Anyone buying a used card risks spending their money on a device having a only a month of life left in the tank.

Sounds like you've answered your own question: the 5970 seem to be the best best for you at the moment.

I don't watch ebay prices much these days, but over the past few months I've seen a number of 5870s going for under $200USD ($160-180).

5xxx series availability issues? How about going with 6770 cards then?
They're very cheap VLIW5 cards, priced at slightly over 2/5 of what a 6950 costs here in my neck of the woods.

I've been running a couple of Sapphire 6770/512 MB cards for 7 months with no failures, each of those little beasties overclocked to 995/300 without any overvolting resulting in slightly over 230 MHash/card. Originally, I clocked them at 1000/300 but that would result in a couple HW errors/day (no hangs). 1010/300 was unstable.

I couldn't help but laugh and pick the "BFL PROFESSIONAL product" in your survey meaning should BFL ever release a professional product, go for it Smiley

As to receiving free power as part of one's benefits, hello you Americans, welcome to Europe Tongue
I'm just wondering, what do the benefits of coffin manufactury workers are? I'm betting oblong.

LOL!
And working for power company = free electricity      -----> MASSIVE LOL!

I wouldn't be surprised if it were so. In my country (Poland) power company workers also get some free electricity (AFAIK they still have to pay but they get it super-cheap).

if you're not paying for electricity essentially then a 5830 would be worth it if you can find them, £60-£80 for around 300Mhash

The problem with these older 5xxx cards is availability. It's like they've gone straight extinct.

Wonder if the gamers dumping them for 7xxx or GTX 7xx will solve some of this.

What kind of total monthly/quarterly consumption do they give if I may ask?

Let's just say that running 10kW 24/7 won't be a problem.

But so far I am not really using any of that. Maybe I should start a mining company on GLBSE if I can find the time for it ?

Then you can kill FPGA from your list.  They would be pointless.

A 5970 will produce ~$120 per month at current difficulty/price ratio.   Even @ $600 per card you are looking at a 5 month payback period.

Simply buy as many cards as you can afford (and are willing to risk) that have the lowest $/MH.  Done.

Given the bad price of 5970s then 7970 are likely you best bet.   If it were me in that situation I would buy one to experiment.

Yes thing is a 5970 is 400 GBP and around 840 mhash or less
a 7970 is 420 GBP and around 700 mhash or more

so 5970s still come out ahead. Not many choices right now.

If you have free/stolen power then who cares.  Any card is a good deal.

All that matters is MH/$.  With no electrical cost just about any card if profitable in 6 months.

As I said before I am not "stealing" any power or making others pay for it.

I work for a local power company as an electrician. No stolen cables or altered meters etc.

So how is that an answer to the question WHAT IS YOUR ELECTRICAL RATE.

That is the most important factor going forward.  The capital cost for GPU is immaterial to the never ending electrical cost.

I ask "What is your electrical rate"?
You answer: "Electrical rates don't really matter to me  ( I work for the power company )"

WTF does that mean?

Electrical rates are currently 0.00 Grin ( benefits package from the company up to a set amount of consumption eg not really unlimited but good for a mining farm )
