Funny story:

Sometime last year, I got introduced to a "scheme" that claimed it would pay you in BTC without much work. I didn't know much about cryptocurrency then. I wasn't exactly moved because I have a hard time believing in things that come easily and I'm usually suspicious of things I get easily. So... At some point I started buying the idea because I knew some few persons close to me that were making real money from it. You didn't have to refer. I didn't want to be left behind, so my curiosity kicked. I was told if have to get the application, put in some BTC and then buy a mining machine Grin Grin I got did all the processes voila, I was making money...

... At least for the first three days, I was making money.
After that week, we were told they wanted to make some upgrade to the app, so we won't be able to place withdrawal at the moment... That was when I knew I was in trouble. Just as I thought, the whole scheme "collapsed" and our money was gone. Ignorance did me bad.

This kind of fraud is called Ponzi Scheme and the service you are talking about is cloudmining.  It has been proven countless times that cloudmining is a Ponzi schemere where they tend to make an early payout so that users will trust the system and invest more money to the platform.  They also take advantage of affiliate system where you get reward of any user you  can refer to avail their service.  Then eventually when they have hit their target, they will run away with the money.

So my question boils down to: are cryptocurrency mining machines really real?  I need answers. How do I know what to trust?!

Cryptocurrency mining machines is real.  You have to buy it and set it up in order to mine cryptocurrency.  You can also rent hashes to some rig rental services but mostly the result is somehow mediocre.  So if you are planning to mine cryptocurrency it is always better to buy your own mining rigs and learn technical stuff about mining.  You can learn much from this board: Mining

Put simply: cloud mining is a great way to lose your money if you are not careful. As for mining on your own, that might still be a viable option depending on the cost of electricity where you live. Finally, as always, remember to do your research before putting any money into cryptocurrency mining. If you do not know what you are doing, it's easy to lose money fast. If you are looking for a safer way to invest in cryptocurrency, consider buying some coins directly. This is probably the best way to make money with your investments.

Even if you are careful, cloud mining is proven to be a waste of money and never ROI.  Once you buy a hash in cloudmining, you already lost a certain amount while waiting for your hashes to give you ROI which in the end is quite impossible because the cloudmining service will shutdown or run away with your money even before you get your ROI

There is a misunderstanding and misinformation here, you can't earn Bitcoin for free and there is nothing like free bitcoin mining this kind of mindset is what has lured many newbies into believing that cloud mining is real.

To mine bitcoin one need a very expensive computer device and software e.g Asic and the rest are the most popular manufacturer of Bitcoin mining equipment, and also bitcoin mining requires a lot of electricity to keep the device running and that also costs money.

So Bitcoin mining is far from being a free activity even bitcoin halving only rewards those miners that mind the rewarded block, not every jack and harry.
Of course you can still earn bitcoin for free. What about sites like freebitco? Or any other btc faucets. If there is something wrong of what he said I think that is when he said that halving gives away free btc to the miners. I don't think halving works that way but halving are in fact lessening the reward the miners are getting.

Miners are not getting free btc but they work hard for it and they use a good amount of money to buy a miner and pay for the electric bills. As for the cloud mining, I think this thing did actually exist for real back in the early days of btc or when btc mining is still not difficult but now most of them are just a scam so we must avoid them at all cost.

So you're saying your close friend join the same mining club, or are you referring to how they can earn Bitcoin with mining? If the scammer has a presence in this forum, you can also make a flag. It is probably not that effective since they come and go every few weeks or so, but sometimes it helps to catch them when they make a mistake. Be careful, they move away from cloud mining to other means such as offering a high-return loan/pool platform where at the end of the day they stole your tokens from your wallet, etc.

Cloud mining is terrible.

A) company is fully fake and folds in a few months.
B) company is legit some are, but all legit companies have the “we can fuck you anytime we want clause”

I had a great contract with some bitmain based company. It was fall of 2017.

BTC was whaling so bitmain canceled the contract and paid it off early since my profits would have been huge if they let it run its course.

So if you use bitdeer (bitmain based) and profits go negative they cancel you lose and if profits go high they cancel and you get far lower profits then you would have.

So if you do a legit company you need btc and difficulty to be very very very stable and you make a small profit.

Or buy a small miner the Apollo and mine with that in your home.

And hold the very small amount of coins it makes for a decade or more.

From your story I assume that they said you to buy a mining machine on some website which basically means you were mining BTC on a cloud based website.
You had to pay some BTC to buy some of their plans after which you started making money. This is ofcourse a scam because cloud based mining doesn't pay you well.
I learnt this around 2016 and started cloud mining on some websites. But they were free sites and did not ask any money to be paid.
In your case it is obviously a scam. These days cloud mining is definitely not profitable. You will have to buy mining rigs and run it to get some decent money.
There are efforts involved where you have to pay for the electricity and do the maintenance of the mining rigs.
Hence mining machines are real but you have to put your efforts in it.

There is no free Bitcoin anymore and for every Bitcoin you earn now, there must be a price to pay for it.
Don't you know about bitcoin halving clock?
there You can still earn free bitcoins. But you have to believe that there are less free bitcoin earnings than ever. Satushi Nekamo has created this clock in such a way that it will be automatically distributed to all mining users. And there are thousands of people earning bitcoins by mining for free. And you can earn free bitcoins by mining from there if you want.

Satushi Nekamo has created this clock in such a way that it will be automatically distributed to all mining users. And there are thousands of people earning bitcoins by mining for free. And you can earn free bitcoins by mining from there if you want.

So, let me recap
- you have no idea what the halving is
- you have no idea how mining works
- you have no idea who Satoshi Nakamoto was
- you have an idea who Satushi Nekamo was

Seeing this and your firm belief in free bitcoins, you're the perfect victim for a scam like the one described by the OP.

Setting up mining rigs is quite hard for newbies, I don't think you will sleep well even though your mining machine already start to mine, because you need to check your mining machines few times.

Mining is not baking cookies that you have to check on them every minute, there are programs and apps with alarms, configurations with triggers for almost every kind of failure, and automatic or notification tasks, you can force reboot on a mine automatically if the hashrate drops, you can shut it down when the temperature reaches x, all automatically without you sleeping like a rabbit in 15-minute intervals.

Yes bitcoin mining is real, Bitcoin mining is very expensive and unless you’re a millionaire I suggest you find something else to do to earn bitcoins.

Let's stop with the exaggerations.
All you need is cheap power and a bit of capital, probably less than 1% of home miners were millionaires when they started mining.

[Nope]No hype delivers more than hope
Since the debut of the business idea, “Cloud mining” has been more like ponzi with many people getting lured into an unwitting scheme. Of course this service should not be trusted at all.

-snip-
we were told they wanted to make some upgrade to the app
That's the funny part, instead of charging customers a fee to upgrade their mining hardware, they finance upgrades of apps that are clearly not needed.

I'm glad you gone passed it and learnt your lesson.
From your story, it seems you were introduced to cloud mining which is actually a scam and Dem my research, there were actual cloud miners that paid real money but not certain if any works currently and if they do, then it wouldn't have to pay anything reasonable.
Bitcoin mining is real and one can mine Bitcoin but I really don't see it work it since it is very expensive unless you're willing to pay for the electric bills and also the mining rigs which are mostly expensive.
There is no free Bitcoin anymore and for every Bitcoin you earn now, there must be a price to pay for it.

Mining is real and profits can be generated if you know what you are doing, however scammers take advantage of it by adding a twist to it, they promise you to obtain a lot of profits and hope the greed of the people to do the rest, and unfortunately as you have experimented by yourself the scam works and people lose their money, so I recommend to you that you stay away from any offer like that, and if you are genuinely interested in this market then you can invest in bitcoin and do your best to hold your coins.

How do I know what to trust?!
You do not, so you do not get to trust anything or anyone. That's the exact point of being your own bank, as you are with Bitcoin; you do not trust, rather you verify.

Do not even trust that your friends are "making" money out of it, a quick search on how to mine Bitcoin would have revealed how a Bitcoin mining app is 100% a scam and would have deterred you from sending anything to them.
You already have a natural inclination to be skeptical and that's good, you just need to complement that with deep research on anything you intend to throw money into.

There's no such make Bitcoin while you sleep, if we talking about the real mining rigs that you must have decent knowledge and start to mine on your home, you wouldn't get any profit after 3 days since the electricity cost and your initial capital is huge, you wouldn't make any profit for short time. Setting up mining rigs is quite hard for newbies, I don't think you will sleep well even though your mining machine already start to mine, because you need to check your mining machines few times.

So my question boils down to: are cryptocurrency mining machines really real?  I need answers. How do I know what to trust?!
It's real, cryptocurrency mining requires physical machine and electricity in order to run it. The cost depends on where you live and it might be not worth it for you if the rewards get spent for maintenance charge without leaving anymore profit for you. You don't need in front of your machine 24/7 to check the mining, it isn't going anywhere unlike the cloud mining where they went away with your money.
For most people it doesn't worth. Mining equipment is expensive, loses value and get damaged/obsolet relatively fast, requires a lot of room and a cold source to not overheat and damage everything even faster.

It means a lot of expenses with energy, besides the initial investment which also has to be a decent one. In the end, bitcoin may continue losing value, decreasing the profitability of the business more yet.

If you have enough funds and a big area, better to think about a more stable and guaranteed sector to invest in, while also thinking about the possibility of producing goods while you sleep.

Looks like the whole cloud mining scheme, it's sad to hear that you fell into this stuff. Cloud mining is no more, any person claims that their cloud mining is legit recently is deserved to be ignored.

Yes bitcoin mining is real, Bitcoin mining is very expensive and unless you’re a millionaire I suggest you find something else to do to earn bitcoins. There are lots of challenges miners face, first you have to buy the necessary hardware and you also need electricity for your farm, nowadays you need to confirm if bitcoin mining is allowed in your region.
How do I know what to trust?!
Never trust the freebies. There’s nothing free on the chess board only gambits, it’s sad you lost your money hoping to get a bigger reward but it’s a good lesson to have as a beginner. People often fall for cloud mining scams because they feel it’s a cheaper way to get Bitcoins. Personally I think the era of accumulating free bitcoins from online games, faucets, are long gone. In 2022, the only way to get bitcoin is to buy some.

Mining machines are real but here we have to be specific with which type of mining machine are we referring to, we have bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies mining machines, we have dome that are reliable to be trusted like that of antminer while the cloud miner aren't trusted because they ended up being like scamming faucets that does not pay you after alot of invested efforts on mining it, they are but just a generator of traffic and the little incentives they generate are only maintained to themselves . Without paying others involved through the mining process, but the blockchain mining of bitcoin requires alot of devices and technical set up arrangements to make because it is the only genuine mining process.

Cloud mining is 100% scam, and if ever have anything to do with such then just know that you will definitely lose your money.

Cryptocurrency mining requires a lot of processes and one is not careful owning a coin as a reward from individual mining is almost impossible right now, since it requires equipment and technicality to do so a lot of software, and hardware is needed with steady electricity to keep the devices running 24/7.

To answer your question,  cryptocurrency mining is real, but one has to use the right mining equipment for such to be successful. So on that note, I will like to ask just only two questions.
1. What mining equipment did you buy or used for your mining journey, or was it just a mere online mining? Because most are scams
2. Did you make any deligent research about it before investing or you just went into it just because of the review of a few?

This should be a lesson to you from today to never invest in what promises a reward too good to be true, as thats the first red-flag of a potential scam
