I had an experience of buying an alt coin on a small bump. Buying at the starting of bump will get you some definite profits whereas if you got stuck at the end of bump, only God may save you. I hate altcoin trading for this reason. We do not know when we may get stuck in middle of their bump and dump.
My most mistake at trading coin is when i buy when the price is rising.And the second mistake,when i see the price for coin is falling,i don wan to wait.I gamble the coin by hoping i can earn some profit before selling all my coin back to cash.And at the end,i lose all my coin because of impatient.
I believe you situation i also happening on most trader including me.Because lack of the knowledge and greed to earn the profit as fast as we can,we just buy the coin at random and hoping the coin will rising at the big gap tomorrow.This is why patient is the most important thing in trader.Not only trading coin,but also in other trading.

Patient is the enemy of a trader especially newbie traders that not knows how to wait or like you that you always tend to sell when everyone is selling and you buy when the coin is pumping but i guess you've learned for on it now as you know what are your mistakes ,Try it to apple and avoid your mistakes and surely you will take a good shot ,a successful trades.

It was in 2013 when I was trading altcoins quite frequently. I was about to place a huge NMC sell order somewhere 25% higher than the market price at that time, but instead, I executed a buy order and bought the price up by mistake. But I kept holding holding, and probably a week or two after that, the price of all altcoins listed on BTC-E exploded in value. My patience made me not lose anything. It turned out to be a mistake with high profits as result.

one of my mistakes in the early days of my trading was not knowing about what the hell stop loss is. in short i can say it is a life saver, and you should always have a stop loss prepared and ready to sell at that price or if the platform allows you, you should then make it automatic in order not to miss out on selling in case of a big dump.

I know that I should close losing positions as soon as possible but I still get married to them hoping to wait out the bad days and have it my way eventually. With Bitcoin it usually works out in the end, but not with altcoins. This seems to be the primary cause of me losing money. Under these circumstances I try to refrain from trading altcoins nowadays and prefer to stick to fiat currencies and Bitcoin mainly. If Bitcoin goes up, that's OK, if it goes down, I just buy a little more coins.
The worst thing you can do is that you lose your cool head. When you are not thinking rationaly and you start panic buying or panic selling it is almost certain you will suffer the loss. So, try to keep calm, analyze the situation, watch the market and make decisions with cool head. And try to predict things. This is maybe the hardest thing and comes with experience but it will save you from buying or selling in wrong time with wrong price.
For me it were the beginner mistakes that have cost me hundreds of dollars worth of coins 2 years ago. It were the well known "When I buy the price goes down, when I sell the price goes up" mistakes.
My biggest mistake was ever attempting it in the first place. I'm utterly crap at it. I've also been crap at dismissing the dead certs. When ETC popped up it was 0.0007. I thought 'hmm, this is a no brainer... nah'. When I woke up it was 3 times or so higher.
Two times i made mistake once when i got a free giveaways coins of an altcoin when listed after seeing a small hike i just sold it and after some days i am seeing 10 times more rate then what i sold it, and second time i just kept it holding as thinking of first mistake and that coin after made high went to 1 satoshi price .
So now i have learned that what ever price you are getting be happy with it as you cannot enter in high and low buying selling in trading.

Most novice to trading that's happening to them. But learn to their mistake that how they earn big in trading because the money is in trading. Correct timing and must study carefully so that you earn more money and you have knowlegde about trading. Based on my experience when I first in trading i lose but recovered only a few weeks and earn more.
My bigger mistakes were made when I didn't close trades with low loss. Of course bigger lose come later.

Just small portion by buying or selling, almost because I didn't researched well before. But all of that was in 2014 (that years I lost ~5BTC for nothing, I mean, gambling, scams, investing and trading). But when I stop been a panic person I was much more confident and my best investment came by researching well and deeply and it wad when I bought 10.000ETH.

the mistakes that I can tell you about is buying some of the coins that died after I bought them, although this was happening more often in the early days that I started trading but they happen from time to time because of the nature of most altcoins.
but because it is trading I never lose much because I dump them when I reach my stop loss.

Yes mistakes can lose your money especialy in altcoins trading when buy a coin that can not rise up.I think it will be the best to share your story so that we can avoid your past mistakes.
So its bettet to check first the coins before you gonna buy to avoiding lost money. Many altcoins now are getting scam after a week they become dead and not rise up again.
