I went with the Ant Miner S3+. So far I am learning a lot and happy with it. I wish it was a little quieter, but that's not a big deal. The price was right too.

okay here is a safe easy mod  add the silverstone  141 fan to the side that does not have the externet jack.

look at this screen shot  I will post it in 1 min

see the silverstone spins at  1000  vs 2000
if you set at freq 200 and never change it is possible
it will be quiet .
as to your question can you switch from 100 to 225 yeah but don't
go under freq 150  .  it will be good enoguh   and with the silverstone 141 at amazon it will be quiet

16.99 amazon prime

look at my fan speeds below

I will check that fan out. I have found that any fan speed below 1900 RPM is quiet enough for me. What version of the firmware are you using? My screen looks different, your fan information is below the frequency information, while mine is in-line with it:

You went with the better unit.  The S3 was a tank and a awsome miner.  The dragon was great but it runs hotter and is less efficient.

I only suggest a Dragon if you somehow have a data center at just a few cents and can get and ROI the dragons for cheap.  But for 95 percent of people (made up number) a S3 is better for you then a Dragon 1T.   Now it get's closer if you look at 1.5T dragons.  But still most will be better off with S3.

I suggest the Lketc Mintforger Dragon 1 Th/s (1000 Gh/s) Sha-256 Asic 28nm Bitcoin Miner

Why would you suggest a very outdated but still quite expensive Miner, that only has 1J/GH Efficiency? This is Antminer S1 territory...

Rich

This is OP's post and the thing that he needs

(EDIT: I am changing my requirements to be anything that is quiet enough to be used in a living space. 1 TH/s 1000 watts is acceptable. Standalone preferred. RPI / PC conection acceptable.)

I am just suggesting something that he can used, he doesn't said his budget so I supposed he can afford that.
but again if not two or three antminer will be great, and I'm using antminers too.  Grin

it has highest efficiency, compact form factor and built-in power supply!
Embedded CGMiner with complete stand-alone operation. After configuring it,
the machine mines alone without a PC connection required. but it is very expensive
$2,649.00 and it is available in amazon!

the antminer S7 has 2 batch available I prefer batch 1 for speed purpose

goodluck in finding what's best for you.  Grin

I want to drop the frequency down to 100M during the evening when I am in the room, then put it back to 225M (the default frequency). Basically, underclock when I am in the room and put to the normal speed when I go to bed/work.

Is there any danger of damaging the memory/storage with frequent writes to it? I don't imagine there is a hard drive inside the unit, so it must be writing the setting to some other form of non-volatile storage (with potentially limited writes).

Someone please correct me if wrong.  But as long as you are just changing frequency I don't see see a huge problem with writing the freq on it.   It is not like a firmware flash that could brick (assuming done right).

I still don't know of one that does it on a schedule.  You might find main thread in hardware for the miner and ask in it.  Hardware threads tend to get more views then speculations.

The miner is quieter than I thought it would be, but it is still somewhat loud when the fans kick up. Is there any danger in switching the frequency to 100M during the day and kicking it up at night when the room is vacant, to the normal level? Does changing this setting daily pose any long term risks to the unit? Is there any way to automate the frequency changing to fit a schedule?

The question would depend on how uch you are "kicking it up".  If you mean kicking it up as normal freq then no not a issue.  If you are over clocking it depends on how high(bitmain does not allow you to do any OC without voiding warranty if that give you a idea).  But yes on bitmain many do run the miners OC.

Closest thing I can think of is M's antmonitor - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ms-miner-antsp-monitor-v52-alertsautomassscheduled-rebootmobile-miner-596178 .  But it does not do freq adjusts to my knowledge.

On DHCP and DNS what does it show there?  Also have you tried with a password?

Those are two things I get out of quick look

It was the password. As soon as I put an X in there it worked!!

Thank you:

Your welcome! Glad that did the fix.   I was not 100 percent sure.  I thought it had a decent chance Smiley

Happy mining! Best of luck with it now its working.

I purchased my S3+ with a nice 850 watt PSU off eBay. I am able to connect to it and pointed it to the Eligius pool. But nothing ever happens. I have reset the device, restarted it and even tried the NiceHash pool. Is there a secret to getting these to start mining? There does not appear to be a "Start" icon anywhere in the gui  Sad

If it is setup right it should start automatically.  Can you post image of networking and pool settings?  Likely within those two screens is something stopping it from running.

Also I would go with a more traditional pool.  Nicehash's pay has been bad for a bit, and it needs a patched firmware to truly work within spec.  So look in pool forum and pick something else to use that uses a regular stratum pool.

I went ahead and switched back to Eligius.st for the pool. I set the miner to use DHCP because I read on a troubleshooting thread that the user was able to get it mining by doing that. It does not seem to have helped me.

Here are some relevant screens from the miner (click to go to Imgur to enlarge):

Main Overview:

Network Set-up:

Mining Address:

Proof that it can ping the internet:

I have been shopping for an S3+ on eBay and there appear to be some nice deals that include a decent power supplies. Are there any good questions to ask the sellers that will help a beginner like myself out? For example, I owned a G-Blade several months ago that I purchased from someone on eBay, it worked well, but the fan made a screaming sound for the first minute after starting up. Is the S3+ easy to reset to factory conditions if the seller has changed the admin password? Or is that a potential pitfall?

No you can reset it from button if they did not give you username/pass.  But you could ask seller what IP is and username/pass when buying to make life easy.

Biggest thing I can think of is ask if it is hashing like advertised.   You could make it as simple of asking "Is only difference between this and new item cosmetic wear?" that covers a lot as far as paypal protection.

I hope the next generation of mining hardware doesn't forget about home people. It's going to be interesting to see what the future brings.
The market for home miners is dead unfortunately. This is the last generation where people are stubbornly holding on. There is too much money for the manufacturers in making mass quantities of data centre deployable miners and no profit in making small miners for the home - and small miners for the home will have increasingly irrelevant hashrates.
