Why is theymos the administrator of Bitcointalk? What makes you the perfect admin, and how did you get to where you are now?

The question I am mostly interested in. Do let me know too if someone know more about this.

Here’s the answer from himself:

The story of how I became head admin is actually pretty boring. Moderators were needed, so I was made a global moderator. Then admins were needed, so I was made an admin. Then over time the other admins slowly lost interest and resigned until I was the only one left. I guess most of the people who were around here to see this have more-or-less left the community now. That's a bit sad.

It's not entirely clear, but for simplicity I usually say that I became head admin at the beginning of 2011, a little over a year after the forum was created.

The forum was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then forum.bitcoin.org (hence the redirect), and finally bitcointalk.org. Fun fact: The name "bitcointalk" was invented by Jeff Garzik, and he's the one who bought the domain.

Edit:

What happened? Did you delete your this post? ImThour?

I deleted because I found something more interesting, check above Cheesy

BTW, thanks for the answer.

Theymos is so far-sighted that he knew that 10 years later I would ask these questions, but the answers are already out there somewhere. We just need to find them. Magnificent!  Grin
Cmon theymos just answer the bloody questions. LoyceV is getting impatient and really pissed off right now. If not for me and LoyceV, do it for the betterment of humanity. And the kids also, we can't forget the kids.

I just want to remind theymos that whenever he is done with the questions, he can PM me the replies. @theymos You don't have to go that much into detail for it to take so much time. It seems that week in and week out he keeps forgetting to send the answers. I don't know why that is. Tongue
Pmalek, It's been more than 1 year since you created this thread and theymos haven't taken the initiative to answer any of those 30 questions since then. I think theymos really don't want to answer them in threads or even send you short answers to every question you ask. He might be shy, but he probably didn't think it was important to answer either. Lol

I don't think answering these questions would help me or anyone to identify theymos, nor would I take part in such actions. Sure, there is the curiosity factor, but not for malicious intents. Many people would want to know who theymos is, how he is like, or who was/were satoshi. The only thing that makes people different is what they would do with that information. So before asking any further questions, I will give theymos some more time to answer the ones from OP. I am sure it's on top of his priority list, let's give him some space.

Below are My 30 Questions for theymos.

None of your questions are bad Pmalek - and sure, maybe there are some further questions that could be asked, too.

Could you imagine if theymos actually answered around 70% or more of the 30 questions with somewhat satisfying responses?  Likely it would not be good for OPsec... and even though historically some folks have been probing about theymos, you gotta hand it to him that he has maintained pretty decent Opsec..

Also Pmalek, I have noticed from some of your further elaboration/responsive posts, that you seem to be attempting to get some substantive answers from theymos while at the same time attempting to avoid OPsec breaches, and surely it could be difficult to achieve both - even though the linked-reddit AMA thread from Rikafip did show that theymos has had his moments of opening up in ways that likely go beyond expectations (or even good judgement regarding some of the seemingly better OPsec practices).

Surely it is possible that some of us have passed theymos in the mall without have any kind of meaningful clue that such rl person had happened to have been theymos.. congrats theymos regarding such an accomplishment, to date..

I am having some difficulties imagining that theymos would ONLY maintain a couple of accounts on this here forum, so there seems to be decent likelihood that theymos has been various other member(s) too.. besides the two accounts that have his name contained therein.

Regarding this thread and the permissiveness of the forum allowing such thread to continue, for sure there are way more power to put together various stories that are way more powerful than any single member or set of members could accomplish on their own... For a variety of reasons, theymos seems to be much braver than me for allowing this thread to continue to exist.... a playing of 3d chess?  not sure, and not sure if it really matters very much in the whole scheme of things?

I should have added this question as well:
- Have you ever claimed a bitcoin fork?

I see no reason not to add questions (or reformulate questions) at your own discretion.

Have you locked into your originally formulation of 30 questions for some reason?  No reason NOT to update.. .or add more or make the existing ones better (if such a thing is possible)... maybe convert to 50 questions.. or 44 questions, if there might be some value in that?  or even going the other way? 18 questions?

My two cents ... As far as I know, Theymos personal data is not a secret, so it seems to me that the first question disappears.

Surely there is a difference between various evidentiary assertions regarding theymos or anyone else and actually admitting specifically to such evidentiary assertions to change the confirmation level of such information.

Furthermore, I have seen posts from theymos in which he has wittingly or unwittingly admitted to certain personal pieces of information (even beyond the reddit AMA thread)... nothing wrong with that I suppose... and for sure, theymos could choose to respond to these 30 questions in his own way - yet again, there seems to be very little reason for theymos to actually encourage such forms of interrogations by actually responding (but surely I had been surprised in some other threads to see him respond to some matters that I had thought that he would not respond)... so yeah doesn't really seem to hurt to ask some of these kinds of questions... whether theymos perceive them as relatively polite and reasonable or if theymos might have other reasons to have reservations to clarify some of these matters...

For example, some of the questions are forum substantive regarding the progression of the merit/trust systems, and surely there are times in which some members in these here parts seem to be quite justified in receiving some explanations regarding some progress (or lack thereof) in the system, so surely sometimes we have been left hanging regarding the extent to which some of these systems may be achieving forum goals or to have some contrary to forum goals within how they might be used, from time to time.

Sometimes, we might perceive that some aspects of these systems will continue, then BBBBBaaaaaammmm, substantive and material changes are put into effect that had not really been announced in any kind of meaningful public way.... by the way, in this regard, can you even imagine theymos telegraphing that there seems to be a problem regarding x, y and z practices, but if he mentions those problems publicly (even though many folks might already anticipate those to be problems), then the announcement does not really help to resolve any aspects of the problematic areas, so there is some value in just NOT saying anything.. or maybe even saying the opposite or having some misconceptions to persist, perhaps? perhaps?

Although speaking in the abstract, he is 1.66 times younger than Vod and he is twins in the horoscope.

I never claimed to be any kind of math wizard, but for me, this is a weird way of expressing a smaller number as compared with a bigger number.. so in that sense, I am confused regarding how to calculate such 1.66x number.

It seems to me that the more straight-forward way to express a relatively smaller number would be to express it as a fraction rather than as a multiple.  What am I missing?  How is this 1.66x number calculated.

Let's say that theymos's age were to be somewhere in the ballpark of 30 years old, then 1.66x of 30 would be 49.8 years old (for Vod)..,.  However, why wouldn't you just proclaim that theymos is around 60% the age of Vod?  Were you trying to say 60%, icopress?

I am asking more of a mathematical expression question rather than really wanting to know the actual underlying numbers.  Did you mean to say 60% rather than 1.66x because wouldn't the actual calculation of 1.66x lead to a negative number, and we would not want a negative number as our results, would we?  Unless we believe that theymos has somehow discovered the fountain of youth, and is not sharing that information with us, not even via pm.. that would not be the right thing to do, right?

Wow how daring Pmalek how daring.

I remember someone scared me that if you press ask any member such questions you might be banned for life.
Nah, that would go against the whole freedom-providing philosophy of Bitcointalk. And besides, there are different ways to look at those questions. Especially the one about what Satoshi would say if he/she came back. If you think today's forum is worse than what it was in the past, you might look at that question and see it as provocative. On the other hand, if you don't remember the atmosphere on the old Bitcointalk or you think this one is the same or even better, that's just a normal question. Wink

•   If Satoshi came back tomorrow, do you think he would be happy with how we use bitcoin? What about the forum? What would he think of it?
•   What is your opinion on altcoins in general?
•   Do you miss certain members who left the forum, and which ones would you like to see come back?
•   How has bitcoin/Bitcoin changed your life for better or worse?

Wow how daring Pmalek how daring.

I remember someone scared me that if you press ask any member such questions you might be banned for life.

Anyway from your questions I would love to hear answers to above selected questions.

Also I would have included some questions related to Satoshi as if it was 2013.

Finally Theymos, releases IP Address of Satotshi and
PM's between Satoshi and Theymos

I'll probably release Satoshi's PMs and logged IPs addresses in ~8 years. This'd probably be of great historical interest. (Though he always used Tor, as far as I can tell.)

But again I heard he said let’s keep it a secret. So no he won’t be releasing any details.

•   Most importantly: ass or tits?

Another important question indeed r/GirlsGoneBitcoin If u/theymos is true.

I'm not sure thymos read threads in reputation board, I've never come across any of his post or replies here....
I bet you he does, especially if his name is in the title.  I've often been surprised when he posts in a thread I would have sworn he wouldn't have read.  Plus I know he reads posts in Meta, which is pretty close to Reputation (in my view, anyway).

I've never seen any of this response on the thread I reply to, so everytime I want to read his posts or check his online habits, I go to his profile. He primarily posts in the P&S section with BaDecker, aside from bumping his DT and forum ad thread. Well, I'm still hopeful he'll answer those questions of yours that have piqued my interest.

Back in 2013 he did reddit AMA in which he shared some info about himself, including his age. An interesting read, I suggest you check it if you haven't already. If he told the truth, he is much younger than I initially thought he is.
It is interesting to see what theymos said when he was asked what Bitcoin service would he like to see developed, and he said decentralized Bitcoin exchange.
He said that this is more difficult to make it than people think, and fast forward 8 years we only have one exchange we can call decentralized on Bitcoin and that is Bisq.
It would be interesting to hear what he has to say now about that topic of decentralized exchanges.

Do you or anyone else here know how old he is?  I'm not sure if I ever really thought about it, but now I'm curious.
Yes, I know how old he is and when his birthday (at least it seems to me that I know, judging by the publicly available data.), but I suppose it would be unethical to publish this information here. Although speaking in the abstract, he is 1.66 times younger than Vod and he is twins in the horoscope. By the way, if you guys (Skeptical Chemist, Pmalek) are still waiting for Mister X's answers, you should try baiting him with cookies. [Oops, Rikafip got ahead of me] Roll Eyes

Pmalek, I doubt that's the real Theymos you found there, but who knows.  Stranger things have happened.
The litecoin gambler on Stake? I know, it was just a joke. It would be interesting to know if he likes to gamble though.
Jeez, I totally missed your reply, Pmalek.  Anyway, I guess it's getting harder for me to detect humor/sarcasm on the internet (or at least on this forum), because I really thought you were serious.  Lol.

Theymos is surely back from his holidays by now. What better way to start your day than to answer my 30 Questions for theymos. He is going to have a blast! Doing one by one is also an option, but please pay attention to the "multiple posts in a row" rule. (naughty, naughty)
