Sorry to go back to the P2Pool topic...

More thread hijacking!

Is P2Pool worth it?

Over the long run, yes. But "smaller" miners will experience extremely high variance.

I've been mining nastyfans p2pool for about 36 hours, but rarely see my BTC address on p2pool.info active client list.

This is what I mean by "high variance." While you are on the active payout list, if P2Pool finds a block, you'll get paid--much more than traditional pools. But you if you are not on the list, you won't get paid.

Reading some wiki info about P2Pool, I'm guessing most of my shares are being discarded and I rarely submit a share with a high enough difficulty to be included in the network.  Does that sound right?

This is exactly correct.

Would it be better to point to my gear to a traditional miner pool?

It's up to you. Most would leave as the variance would be too high (a long time before a payout).

Thanks for the quick response Carnth.  I apologize for thread hijacking...  Like I said, I just want to make sure I'm doing it right so that my meager hash rate can help NastyMining in some way.

So I just got my erupters in.  Do i put the BRG miner to nastyfans.org:9332?  I still get payouts when i use my address right?  This is not just donated but im still helping correct?

Correct - if you use your address as your login and password you'll receive it - as an additional check - go to http://p2pool.info and you should see your address after some time running.

I don't believe that is correct. We are using modified software and the payout system is not yet in place. If you point a miner at the NastyFans.org pool, you will be donating your hashing power at this time.

Actually OgNasty, it will work. The P2Pool software running on nastyfans.org is a unmodified P2Pool node and it does not charge any fees. But there are plans to make changes to benefit nastyfans. I will announce these changes when they are ready. Until then it is a normal P2Pool node.

Nice.  I'll point my 5GH/s at nastyfans.org:9332 and see what happens.   Grin

Sorry to go back to the P2Pool topic...  I have only about 1 GH/s (hobby miner) and P2Pool noob.  Is P2Pool worth it?  I've been mining nastyfans p2pool for about 3 days, but rarely see my BTC address on p2pool.info active client list.  Reading some wiki info about P2Pool, I'm guessing most of my shares are being discarded and I rarely submit a share with a high enough difficulty to be included in the network.  Does that sound right?  Would it be better to point to my gear to a traditional miner pool?

Thanks for the advice.  I am just trying to find the best way to support/boost NastyMining.

I'm definitely not interested in buying erupters for 0.4 BTC each.  There are 0.1 BTC coupons floating around with only 30% of those coupons being issued already.  If anyone wants to donate their 0.1 BTC coupons, I would considering purchasing near that price.
I didn't think so but thought I'd put it out there!  Really at .4 BTC it's a huge cost per GH/s ratio...

Do you have any plans to acquire more hardware prior to the Monarch's production runs? I see there is a small stake in a few group buys but was wondering whats going on behind the scenes.

Not that it's anything big, but BTC-Guild just dropped the price of their Eruptors to .5 and I've got a few coupons to get that down to .4.. I'm waiting to see if any friends want to jump on that but should have about 5 coupons, maybe up to 10 depending on how many want to use the coupons I have (and technically, some of them aren't really mine but he's a fellow Nasty Fan). I'd be willing to donate some to Nasty if he wants to do that.. Just not sure if it'd be worth the .4 for each eruptor..

I do have plans to acquire more hardware prior to the Monarch's release.  For example, we have another 60GH/s miner that I expect to ship from BFL in the coming weeks.  However, we don't have much funds to play with for new hardware until we repay some loans.

are there plans of putting a fee on that node? could be a good nastfans thing to do. If you're mining on someone else's pool, you have to give someone a fee -- might as well make it naaaastyfans.

That does sound like a great idea. I think we can do better than a standard P2Pool node though. Wink

That sounds not only fair but like an excellent idear!

I was testing it out yesterday and believed it worked for me although I could have been mistaken.  I did see my login showing up on p2pool.info with an approximate speed.   I noticed that cgminer was acting funny on me though and would crash my system after 10-15 minutes this morning so I switched back to bit minter until I figure out what the cause of the system stability problems are.

Interesting. Maybe nonnakip is back to work behind the scenes.  Wink

Sorry to "dredge" up the P2Pool thing again - so I've logged in the nastypool to donate, to get it so I'm getting paid, I just change the user to my bitcoin address correct (and password doesn't matter)?  I don't have a huge amount of power but happy to help along with making the P2Pool stronger  Grin (especially if I don't have to do the config on it)

I was able to answer my own question, here's another 32 GH/s to the P2Pool!
