You will need risers when using three cards on one board. Yes, you can get by without them but your GPUs will burn to the ground immediately, or in two weeks when they get a gentle coating of dust.

DON'T waste money on x16-x16 risers. Not only are they unnecessary, but they impede airflow badly and are a extreme pain in the ass to work with. At the least get x1-x1 risers, and preferably get x1 to x16 risers so the card locks onto the riser cable. Use powered risers, they are about the same cost and the peace of mind is worth it. If you push the limit you are burning the motherboard out, so that's up to you. If the mobo is designed to run tri-fire or 3 way SLI then powered risers are not necessary but would not hurt in the slightest.

A x1-x16 powered riser cable should be like $5-10. I prefer the USB 3.0 ones, and those are $25 each on ebay now.

An 80 gold power supply is rated to be 80% efficiant to some point, it's better than an 80+ silver, which is better than an 80 plus, etc.. Google will explain the differences, but the basic is "gold" saves you power costs.

Three cards will run on a good quality 850W supply, plus give you a touch of room for overhead so the PSU is running at a peak point in it's efficiency range.

so I plan on running 3-4 cards at first. I will start with 3 cards but I will likely get another come the new year. So for now, let's say 3 cards.

I was told to just stick with 4 gbs ram since 8 isn't really necessary.

Here are the risers I was planning on getting:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-Express-PCIe-16X-Riser-Card-Ribbon-Extend-CableMolex-Power-Capacity-Filter-/271340798897

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-express-1X-to-116x-Riser-Extender-Card-with-Molex-Power-Ribbon-Cable-/141063481854

are these the right ones to get? and how many do I need?

I thought about getting 2 psu's but the coolmax one in my list is a good price, is gold rated and has lots of over hang for 3-4 cards. are these good psu's? thanks everyone, I can't wait to get mining!

these are the risers.. they say extenders but what is the dif between these and what you're talking about?
You will need 3 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA29716C8635&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-_-pla-_-Audio+%2f+Video+Accessories-_-9SIA29716C8635&ef_id=Up@HrgAABCD5JDjk:20131210024333:s

And two of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-express-1X-to-116x-Riser-Extender-Card-with-Molex-Power-Ribbon-Cable-/141063481854

So they do appear to be cheaper there. Most of the time they go for around $100. With 5 card you will need to go with the 1200 watt powersupply.

so I will going with 3 cards for my first build. is this the appropriate number of risers I need for a 3 card build? I'm assuming at this price it's still cheaper to go this route? I have seen that guide before and I use it as a reference but I hear so many different opinions about how to "properly" build a rig I wanted to reach out to the community. will is be cheaper to get say 2x 750w psu instead of going for the 1200w coolmax? I might be over doing it with a 1200w psu and only 3 gpu's?
With 3 gpus you don't need any risers. They will all fit on that board. But if you want them to last longer use the extension ribbons. (These are not the powered ones). They go for about $5.

The REASON for Riser is so you can put more GPU into the motherboard as these GPUs take up too much space to put 3X 7950.

These powered Riser do not cost $ 100 a cable, not sure where you find them so expensive. Maybe include deliveries.

You can get them for about $ 10 to $30 a piece, and i am glad to sell them mine for $ 40. LOL

go to the internet and search for PCI-e Riser Cable or powered by molex type.

Normal Rule of Thumb is 3X 7950 GPU - no need powered riser.

IF 4x, then one unit need powered Riser.

For that price I think I might be adding 2 more cards on both my AS rocks 970 boards. lol!

should the extenders be powered?

Am running this PS with that board and processor. When I bought it, it was on sale for $99.

It is good & modular with 6 PCI-E connectors.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817116016

If I went with this psu would I still need the risers? I'm a little confused as to what they are even for but I was told to get powered ones. can someone confirm this?

Will a 850w psu run 3 cards?

850 watts will not run more than 3 7950s. the powered risers can be $100 a pop. so you will be spending $300 on a board with two powered risers when you could get a board with 5 pci-e slots for $200

the risers I have found on ebay don't cost $100.. did I find the wrong ones?

How much? if they are 5-10 they are the extenders. which is good to raise them above the board for cooling.

at the price I found them on ebay wouldn't it make sense to go with the cheap board and get the risers.. they would help with heat management too would they not?

Also with more than 3 cards i would up your ram to 8gb as cgminer can run 1-2 gb per card on the 7950s.

what does modular mean? and should the psu be gold rated?
Modular means you can add power adapters as you need them. Your case is much less cluttered. Gold rated is better.

That board will only support 3 7950's without the powered pci - pci-e risers which would defeat the purpose of ordering that board in the first place.

Personally,

IF you plan to put 5 X 7950 into your system, it's going to be hard. You need powered Riser Cable and maybe Two PSU units.

A simple calculation.

Bare Minimum System 100W

5X 7950 is 5X 200W = 1000 W.

Total is 1100W.

A 1400W PSU is better as the loading is just 80 percent.

You need to find a VERY EXPENSIVE 1200W PSU or better you have 2X 750W PSU and link them together . Make sure both have common ground.

Depending on which Motherboard and Operating System, you will find problem with not able to recognized more than 4 GPU.

The system will be very unstable and not worth it.
