do i need to set anything in the DNS section?
Usually, if you have a home router and aren't directly connected to a DSL/Cable modem, your DNS is usually the same number as your gateway. (Your gateway [router] usually resolves the DNS stuff for you)

also does the avalon thing automatically install stratum?
Stratum is a protocol type used by certain pools.

As for the bad gateway,

A) Make sure to place your router (or if directly connected) your DSL/Cable modem as the gateway. That should resolve your issue.

You can find the gateway info by turning on one of your desktop/laptop pcs and simply looking at your network configuration.

B) You have to make sure your chosen pool is active and typed in correctly. Otherwise you will get that sort of error if the pool server cannot be found when queried.

C) You have to carefully check your Pool settings (in the Avalon device settings) and make sure they are validly entered and accurate. Otherwise the server won't send you any work and you'll see the type of socket error.

These three things should clear up your problem.

Watching on the sidelines. I think he needs a find a local geek to help him.
It twould appear that he might not have a router, that would explain how he does not have WiFi and where he got the public IP address. I dont think he reset the internal router correctly.

Good luck and get to hashing.

Make your PC:
67.204.32.6
255.255.255.0

Log into:
67.204.32.5

REMOVE that IP, do you know what your regular IP behind your router?  If you use 192.168.1.x then set it to say 192.168.1.200, gateway 192.168.1.1, mask 255.255.255.0, DNS 4.2.2.2

He would need a static rout too 67.204.32.5... good luck trying to get him to do that though, he'll probably end up bricking his router.

What he needs to do is unplug his PC's ethernet, and plug it directly into the Avalon, then try to connect to 67.204.32.5.  The Avalon should provide an IP, it has a DHCP server.

Okay so network engineer and Batch 2 owner here...

What did you do?  Set the IP to a public one?  67.204.32.5?

Here's how to fix it:

Make your PC:
67.204.32.6
255.255.255.0

Log into:
67.204.32.5

REMOVE that IP, do you know what your regular IP behind your router?  If you use 192.168.1.x then set it to say 192.168.1.200, gateway 192.168.1.1, mask 255.255.255.0, DNS 4.2.2.2

You never answered WIRED or WIRELESS.

Well, anyway.

Here's what I'd do if I were in your situation at this point:

1) Go to the store.
2) Buy a set of allen wrenches so you can open the case.
3) Buy a cheap laptop running windows. Make sure it has an Ethernet port and a USB port.

4) When you get home, install CGMiner on the Laptop.

5) Use the allen wrenches you just bought to open up the case.
6) Unplug the USB cable from the TP-Link module and plug it into your laptop.
7) Turn on the Avalon
8] Run CGMiner on your laptop with
Code:
--avalon-options 115200:24:10:45:282
on the command line

Otherwise, IDK.  Maybe you can get someone to send you a new TP-LINK TP-WR703N board with the avalon software pre-configured, and once you get it you can try again, then return the laptop to the store.

Wait, I just noticed this:

also just confirmed i cannot connect to the ip i set it to. this is what i filled each line with

static address
67.204.32.5
255.255.255.255
67.204.32.5

You set it to use itself as a gateway? And used 255.255.255.255 as a netmask?

Anyway, Here is something you could try doing:

1) take your PC's ethernet cable, unplug it from wherever it's plugged in
2) Plug it directly into the Avalon
3) Try to connect to http://67.204.32.5 - see if it works.

Note: you won't be able to connect to the internet on your PC while doing this.  It would be good to use a laptop or something while doing this, if you have one.

Eh, if I were in your position I'd try the USB technique at this point, but I have a lot of experience building PCs, etc. Although, do you have the tools you need to open the case?

just attempted . did not work Sad

Connect it up to your pc and login to your router and see if you have any other connected devices and see if it has openwt or unknown and an ip address and try connecting to it. think you are almost their just need find out what ip its using as if its not using default then something is wrong somewhere.

So you have solid blue light if so you should be able to connect using default settings.

4. Telnet 192.168.1.1. It will take you to the root prompt.
5. Enter "firstboot" at the prompt to reset the router to default
6. Restart

I really recommend you don't do that at this point.  It's from here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/village-telco-dev/-01vpXQjmUo

I don't know what happens if you do that, it could overwrite the Avalon/OpenWRT firmware with whatever ships from TP-Link.

the settings that hes upto on resetting is fail safe settings and with firmware of Avalon on it should default to default settings of 192.168.0.100 and 101

as for telnet shoulder need to do this should be fine connecting up as normal but if not then only other options but i  wouldn't advise doing unless knows what is doing taking router out connecting to pc and re doing it that way. or goto Amazon buy one of the exct tp links and change it and flash to  Avalon firmware and I can confirm ProMac done this with a router from amazon to paly with the settings on it. However he didn't connect to Avalon tho.

Other option would be to plug usb direct to pc or laptop running ubunto and then compiling cgminer.

Also, here's the thing: You can, in theory, use your own computer rather then the TP-Link to run the controller.

Here's a picture of the controller inside the Avalon unit: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/File:Avalon-controlunit-v1.2.JPG
As you can see there is a USB-B port on that control board.  here's a picture: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/File:Avalon-controlunit-v1.2-usb-connector.JPG

That plug will be pluged into the USB port on the TP-Link board: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/File:Avalon-703n-front.JPG

If you unplug the USB cable from the TP-Link, and plug it into your own computer's USB port, and run CGMiner on your own computer, you should be able to use it that way.

Make sure the Avalon unit is turned off when disconnecting/reconnecting things.

This should theoretically work if you have the latest version of CGMiner on your computer.   Obviously that's a temporary solution, but it should theoretically work if you can't get your TP-Link to work.
