NEO Council Monthly Report – December

big thank you to all community members who followed us through 2017. It was a big year for NEO, including our rebrand, Smart Contract 2.0 release, NEO VM release, and completion of NEP-1 to NEP-6, just to name a few of our milestones. Let's also not forget the first few projects using NEP-5 token, setting the foundation for many more to come.

Question:

In order to earn GAS, do you stake NEO and stake GAS?

Thank's,
Joe

You stake NEO. And you don't need to keep the wallet open for this. You just need to have balance.

You just need to move your NEO to a wallet you control and you will start earning gas. Most exchanges won't reward you gas for holding it on the exchange, but a few do.

AFAIK, Bittrex doesn't pay you GAS, but Binance does. So if you want to keep your NEO on an exchange, it is better to keep them on Binance.

On a different note: it looks like it is way harder to break this 0.110 ETH price resistance. NEO is trying to break this level for last several days but always push down.

Massive Intel Hardware Vulnerability Discovered: Crypto Users Affected?

In a shocking development, researchers are now assuming every Intel processor made over the previous ten years could have a catastrophic, low-level CPU vulnerability. A software patch could be coming soon, but it’s estimated to degrade CPU performances by up to 30 percent. How will miners and crypto users be affected?

A “Zero-Day” Vulnerability

Microsoft, Linux, and everyone in between are now scrambling to respond to the critical “kernel memory leaking” flaw that’s just been identified as potentially inherent to every modern Intel processor, per a bombshell January 2nd report from The Register.

The problem is thus: there lies a hardware bug in Intel’s CPUs that can allow malicious agents and their code to read into what should be protected areas in these device’s kernel memory. In layman’s terms, kernel memory facilitates the most fundamental aspects of an operating system (OS).

Accordingly, this devastating vulnerability can expose secure data like passwords with ease. And particularly dire are how exposed virtual machine server farms (e.g. Amazon Web Services, or AWS) seem to be in light of the nature of the bug at hand.

The solution can’t come in the form of hardware, as doing so would be logistically impossible from Intel’s end. Instead, OS-level software patches will be needed.

Cryptocurrency Users Affected?

Yet again, the cryptocurrency space is reminded through this expansive Intel vulnerability not to leave non-trivial investments on crypto exchanges for any extended period of time, as exchange passwords are precisely the kind of sensitive data that could be retrieved from a CPU’s kernel memory.

Has anyone’s crypto been stolen through this exploit already? It’s hard to say, though seemingly unlikely since Intel and other dedicated researchers just discovered it themselves.

But the vulnerability should have everyone in the space considering the switch over to a cryptocurrency hardware wallet, that is if they haven’t already. Hardware wallets are simply the safest way to store cryptocurrencies as it stands, and there are a range of reputable ones to choose from.

CPU miners in the cryptocurrency ecosystem may also be affected, as the coming software patches are projected to degrade CPU performance from anywhere between five and 30 percent. Though these miners might escape mostly unscathed, as CPU mining relies less on memory and more on processing.

For those of you who would like to check if you received the HashPuppies airdrop point your favourite browser at this URL and stick your NEO address in the appropriate place to see if you have RHTT2 (which I think it the Hashpuppies token).

I like that the team does not aspire to simply raise money and wait for the growth of the value of the tokens. It seems to me that they are trying to create a community of like-minded people and a solid base. By the way, about the price now it is $ 94.60 USD (2.43%). not bad. Smiley

MOONLIGHT
Building a Decentralized Workforce Platform

https://neonewstoday.com/development/moonlight-building-decentralized-workforce/

Building a Decentralized Workforce Platform

Moonlight takes an alternative approach to the mechanic used for project staffing, realization, and compensation to create a distributed workforce that is capable of fulfilling the needs of the current blockchain ecosystem while also tackling some of the issues presented in the conventional product development space as well.

In the project announcement for Moonlight, we outlined some of the fundamental goals of the project:

Accessibility of critical project resources
Verifiable organizational skill-sets
Improved project success rates
While these aren't the only goals of the project, they are certainly some of the more important ones. If you missed the project announcement, you can find it here.

Over the next few months, leading up to the formal whitepaper and ICO, we will be releasing a series of announcements that will provide some conceptual information about how Moonlight is being designed to meet the project's goals. These announcements are meant to seed the community with some of the Moonlight concepts in the hopes that we can fine-tune the project using community feedback.

In this article, we are going to cover some of the terms used in the Moonlight ecosystem as well as a concept for the Moonlight system token. We believe this information will be valuable for the community and helpful for understanding concepts presented in the next article which will cover the project definition and analytical project management components of the ecosystem. All of the concepts presented here will be presented in extended detail in the whitepaper.

Moonlight Terminology:

Organization

In Moonlight, organizations are the entities which generate content. An organization can be an individual or group of individuals. Organizations can also be made up of other organizations. They have the ability to generate tasks in the ecosystem and also resolve them.

Organizations can act in one of the following roles during task resolution:

Issuer: The organization that creates a task in the system.
Resolver: The organization that fulfills a task in the system.

Moonlight provides a number of mechanisms to track organizational competency:

Skills: Every task completed by an organization is published to the blockchain. The skills required for each completed task are logged to the organization and can be used to represent the domain-specific capabilities of an organization.

Reviews: After a task has been completed, the participating organizations (Issuer and Resolver) are prompted to review eachother. Organizational reviews are published to the blockchain. This review represents the overall quality of interacting with the organization.

Bid Accuracy: When acting as a Resolver, organizations place bids on tasks (see bidding). The accuracy of these bids relative to the actual completion duration are also logged as a tool to indicate the organization's bid quality for tasks. The skills associated with the tasks are taken into consideration when evaluating bid accuracy within the system...........
