There is a Ripple (by OpenCoin). But I don't like them. Why ? Because they base their currency on debt, rather than assets.

I believe this is WRONG.

I wish there were a couple of secure online Litecoin wallets available.  I'm always hoping my computer won't crash and I'll lose my Litecoin client.  I'm not really sure how to back up properly.  Am I suppose to back-up the wallet each time a transaction is made?  Should I send the backup file to an external drive or email a copy of the file to myself?  I'm sorry to go so off-topic.  I really have know idea of what will be the next big crypto currency.  I'm trying to hold some coins of many types  (as a high-risk fun investment) to play it safe.

You don't need to back it up with every transaction, the transactions are kept in the block chain.  Just save your wallet.dat file (name it something you'll remember) someplace it will be safe!

Well Litecoin seems to be doing just fine as it is. Though I think it needs more exchanges as do other crypto's to become more valuable. And really you need to be able to buy something with it directly.

With the monster acis units on the horizon of a full scale assault on btc soon(when they start mass shipping) and the ensuing skyrocketed difficulty level,

which coin will be the next big thing to mine?

Me personally i think the PPcoin since it too can be mined with a acis machine and would be perfect for us light wieghts who wont be able to compete with the tera hash/s powerhouses.

I'd stick with bitcoin cuz ill have a lot by then

non of the alt currencies will get any significant attention until bitcoin itself is fully accepted. even though litecoin may have good intentions from the developers, most of those alt currencies are just pump-and-dump.

Definitely Litecoin...but seriously at some point these alt coins need to stop IMO...everyone is trying to cash in

This is a free market, a real one, the more currencies we have the better because we can experiment and find out which system works best.

While I'm pro competition I do not see that the alternatives offer any revolutionary new concept compared to bitcoin.

PPCoin?

It seems interesting. But I don't know if the concept will work - have to read a bit more about it though.

In fact, I think a effectively deflationary coin like bitcoin (which in strict terms is also inflationary) is a good idea. This is contrarian to the current fiat system. And I think we have already seen that such an inflationary system does not work well longer term... I mean everybody will spend some of his wealth at a certain point of monetary value in relation to his needs. A deflationary system mostly prevents unneccessary spending which saves resources but will not prevent economic prosperity. Artificially induced demand (via inflation) is not healthy.

Litecoin uses different hashing, which could serve as a backup in the unlikely case sha failes.

You know how I can be certain that none of these me-too-coins will ever succeed?  The fact that every discussion is about miners.  Miners don't matter.  No one cares what miners want, and no one follows their lead.

Litecoin was a good alternative during the past month (6-9 Month)... but the difficulty raised the last weeks/month, so that CPU-Mining (yes, I did it with some strong servers and about 8-10 "normal" workstations) is no more efficient.
I startet with ~ 60 LTC/Day and a total Hasrate of ~ 700kh/s, now I just get ~ 2-5 LTC/day...

okay I had to switch of some clients, but my 2 servers with each 24 Cores & 32GB RAM run at 100% and they generate only 1,2 LTC/day... so mining LTC with CPU-Power is "dead".

I am looking for good alternatives, but there are too many new cryptocurrencies and I can't make a decision Wink I hope I make a good choice with PPCoin and TerraCoin, we will see :-p

I think especially the new altcoins are created to make quick money. Hopefully one with real technical advantages and no pre/instamine and huge early adopter advantage emerges.
