Just as Neuroticfish said, maybe they're trying to force him to do the same thing as Whatsapp.
With the current heat coming his way, I don't know how long he can keep up with the fight for privacy and freedom. He left his home country when the Russian government demanded for telegram encryption key because they wanted to surveil users. He's battling with the French authorities while the South Korean government is waiting on the sideline to bounce on him. At the end, he may be forced to give in to the demands of the authorities.

I believe so too, there is also pressure on France, as a lot of people are monitoring this case closely and accusing France of being against freedom and free speech, and it is hard to disagree if you look at the charges against Durov. Telegram isn't the only messaging application that illicit things happen, except these authorities want telegram to spy into chats and groups of their users, while lying to them that they don't.

Telegram has recently become the major base of many airdrops. Few of them have been profitable while many have been a waste of time. That social media platform has also been experiencing high levels of financial scams. Before now, Facebook used to be a scammers' haven, but Telegram has taken over the first position.
