Congrats!!

I'm very happy that Theymos has gone the route of adding more merit sources and increasing existing sources' sMerits rather than either doing nothing or backing away from the merit system.  I don't think he's communicated his thoughts on the system in a recent post, but he's speaking volumes by his actions today.

I've read that 14 new merit sources were added. It's a great step forward.

Edit: I've just noticed that most probably you've already also read that  Grin

Congratulations NotATether! I do believe that you'll use that "power" wisely, and I also believe that the sub-forum where you spend most of your time really could use a help by having a merit source such a yourself. Remember - "With big power comes big responsibility" Wink

Fuckin' A, bro!  I'm very happy that Theymos has gone the route of adding more merit sources and increasing existing sources' sMerits rather than either doing nothing or backing away from the merit system.  I don't think he's communicated his thoughts on the system in a recent post, but he's speaking volumes by his actions today.

Congratulations, NotATether.  Go forth and give out those merits until it hurts!

Thank you guys for all the support!

Congratulation NotATether, great news!
You really deserve this honor and I believe that you will use the merits in the right way, to help the community and members who deserve it with their hard work and quality.
I really hope that theymos will soon promote new merit sources given that we had some very high quality applications in Meta.

The reply is to support your application. If I am not wrong the theymos hadn't added merit sources for a long time. But users of the forum increasing rapidly, so I feel we need more merit sources to increase merit circulation here. I can't recall exactly how long I have waited before become a merit source but I think more than 6 months. If you are lucky then you would become quickly, otherwise, you have to wait but not sure how long. There are more few new merit source applicants and I believe a few applicants really deserve it to serve the forum. Anyway, I hope the admin will consider that upon notice of your application.

Best of luck.

The risk to reward ratio is surely not favorable, you are right about that. However, the merit source application doesn't have to be successful. All that is needed is to get some exposure for those posts and the potential to earn a few merits is there. Some of the quoted posts could be legit, others could be from your alts. You said it yourself, some posts in this thread got some merits and that's all the abuser could be interested in.

I am in no way inclining that NotATether is such person and I apologize to him for kind of hijacking his thread to share my thoughts. It's just something that occurred to me. I wonder how many posts from merit source application threads in the past years received merits because they were mentioned in such threads and received increased visibility...

Hey guys I appreciate the discussion about merit source abuse and all but can you please continue it in another thread? Thanks  Smiley

I wonder if someone ever attempted something like that?
I've never come across such a case, but it seems like it will be too much work for too little a reward and would expose the user's alt potentially.
Firstly, merit sources are selected from the dedicated users to the forum, meaning a user would need to have risen to a certain rank and built some reputation, risking that for a couple of merits around alts doesn't seem worth it, and if a newbie in need of merits applies as a source, it would likely not get much attention.

Also, as I said earlier the reward is relatively small, checking through the suggested posts in this thread only a few received a few merits after the application was made, so there are no guarantees.

It's just the fact that they're merit-worthy excluding the probability that someone can abuse it once in a while.
Talking about abuse, something just came to my mind. Someone could try to apply as a merit source and quote posts from his many alt accounts or the accounts of his friends/family/people who pay him/whoever... Having those posts in Meta in a thread with a merit source application will surely result in many people reading them and potentially giving them a few merits. I wonder if someone ever attempted something like that?

Admins require from the applicants to provide a list of ten merit-worthy posts based on their judgement; I observe, though, that they don't require the amount of merits that the applicants would send on each post which makes me think that the number doesn't matter objectively.
The number of Merit will depend on how much the Merit source has left. See:
If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

Why is it structured like that?
I do not think the admins regulate how much merits a user sends for worthy posts nor do they intend to. Theymos has once written that users should freely give merits and if a user needs 50 to rank up and deserves it, by all means send them.
I however think applicants merit awarding history would be reviewed, they will not want to appoint someone who has a history of hoarding merits to be a source.
I assume that's one of the 'history' that will be checked from the boldened part below;
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

Farewell, Leo
I support this.

NotATether has shown how capable he is in bitcointalk. He has helped me in the past with some technical difficulties I was struggling with. Besides that, I also believe that he's trustworthy; he's providing some writing and VM/File hosting services.

Now, beyond this, I'd like to read an answer to a query I have in the way merit sources apply. Admins require from the applicants to provide a list of ten merit-worthy posts based on their judgement; I observe, though, that they don't require the amount of merits that the applicants would send on each post which makes me think that the number doesn't matter objectively. It's just the fact that they're merit-worthy excluding the probability that someone can abuse it once in a while.

I fully support NotATether being a merit source. Because, he is very active on development and technical section of the forum and answering people question. In the same time, he can definitely find useful posts from the other people in this forum section. He can be a great merit source to support the Dev&Tech section.

Good grief, I just had a nightmare of theymos PMing me that I became a merit source followed by an avalanche of PMs from people sending me their posts for me to merit...  Shocked Undecided
Good, you had nightmare of theymos. Almost made your day  Grin

The tech-boards have always been lacking Merit compared to - say - posts in Meta. Since I'm still loaded in sMerit, I've sent you my 30 days maximum.

Merit sources really shouldn't be biased against (or for) certain members, though I can't say I haven't been guilty of that before.
As a Merit source I can be biased against reading posts from certain users, and if I don't read his posts because he's on my ignore list, he's much less likely to receive Merit.

I have seen NotATether being one of the most active users on the forum and has a good judgement so would be a good addition to the merit source if approved.
