The people that matter, the movers, the forerunners, the discoverers, the inventors, are always a small minority.
Often it took time until what they discovered or invented was used by many.

Less than 0.1% of the world population own bitcoin, clearly lots of room for adoption to grow
Hopefully the plethora of apps under development presenty will ease adoption even further

Optimistic people will say that this is good sign, that still are lots of room to grow.
Pessimistic people will see this like bad sign, that not many people accepted bitcoin and that bitcoin will never become mainstream.
Only time will show.

If a study can link the number of addresses per user

A Bitcoin wallet is just a collection of one or more addresses. I don't believe there's any way of determining how many wallets there are.

Every estimate I've seen of the total number of bitcoin users is completely arbitrary. I think 625,000 is probably low.

If it's any consolation, The Bank of England estimated in their bitcoin report, that there is currently 1.6m wallets addresses with a balance over .001btc. That's easy to verify on the blockchain. If a study can link the number of wallets addresses per user, then we might be on to something. How to find a random sample of bitcoin users to query may prove challenging, but that's why some firms specialize in things like this. Personally I'm interested in the answer, and I think a lot of prospective bitcoin startups would like to know as well.

I disagree, the guarantee is the technological innovation Bitcoin represents. Solving the Byzantine General's problem with a decentralized public ledger was a massive advancement in computer science. It cannot be ignored.

It's folly to pretend things are the same now as the were before this technology existed. They're not, and they never will be again.

It is true the progress brought by the underlining technology behind bitcoin can't be denied and in many ways it is revolutionary. Its potential does not solely lies within just cryptocurrency. That of course does not guarantee bitcoin's mass adoption,as I stated earlier the general public would only care if it more accessible to them and there is enough perceived benefits to warrant the effort and cost .

They are plenty of tales of cool technology that never lives up to their hype(usually by being overtaken by something else).
The examples that I gave(PDA and pagers) never did capture the public imagination much regardless of how good it was at its intended utility and quickly falls to the sideline the moment cellphone catched up(and bypass them thanks to the advent of smartphones). While they did not go the way of the rotary phones ,both this technology now only served some very niche application (a far cry from the brouhaha of their zenith). The same can happen to bitcoin .

Regardless of ultimate its outcome , bitccoin is definitely a landmark in its own right and I'm sure future archivers note how significant it was(while us that lives through it reminiscence about it).

It seems to me that adoption of bitcoin by non-technical people will take quite some time. If this scale is true, there is definitely a lot of room for growth though.

If my theory proves to be accurate, Bitcoin will be several orders of magnitude larger by 2020.

That is if bitcoin progression does mimics the internet's.
It'll be close enough that the differences won't matter.

There is till no guarantee that bitcoin won't go the way of the PDAs or the pagers

I was curios too. If you have the patience to look all the way right and zoom in, you will see the source and date: 2/10/2014.
This stat is over half a year old.

And so much has happened in the last 6 months although I suppose it wouldn't change things too much.

Yes, there are between 1-2 million unique coinbase wallets and 99% of these are only US clients. Extrapolating the different exchanges there are at least 4-5 million bitcoin users right now.

The data wasn't even accurate 6 months ago either as coinbase passed 1 million back in feb and most bitcoin user live outside of the US. This would indicate that conservatively 3 million was the approximation back in Feb.
