Exactly the same on the Ethereum Blockchain! If you want to send a Token there you need a little amount of ETH which is used as GAS. Nothing unusual here except your comment.

Next airdrop to BTC holders is planned in March, but the ratio has been much lowered and it's more a symbolic airdrop.
Distribution is now supposed to be made through cashback program and another way that is not announced yet.

For instance, if you want to transfer an ethereum's erc-20 token you need gas (priced in eth) to pay for transaction fees i.e. you need to have eth so that you can send an erc-20 token.
