Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
I already have $70+ USD invested due to this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-oculus-rift-coin-orc-the-first-physically-mined-cryptocurrency-431248, not to mention there's women in Russia wonder why The Phinn hasn't shown up yet to conduct his naughty nightly market research.  Shocked

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Just finished reading the other 19 posts on page one, and I, too, am not a gamer but, in my mind's eye, this VR thingy, viz. the Oculus Rift device, WILL bring cryptocurrency mining to the next level. And to think the leap was made with only twenty previous posts on this forum. (edit: looks like OR has been discussed before)

Just to share this video:

Any thoughts?

Yes, I have a thought: OculusRiftCoin (ORC). Especially after reading the following:

Quote
On December 12, 2013, Marc Andreessen joined the company's board when his firm Andreessen Horowitz led the $75 million Series B venture funding.

No more mining via hashing! The only equipment needed is the headgear and a pool to mind to, after solo mining runs its course. Also, no pre-mining. More to come, for you won't believe who now owns oculusriftcoin.com (.co, .net, .biz, .info, and .org).

Wow, I am so freaking excited. Valve is backing the Oculus Rift helping them with research and development and building platforms for developers to make content on VR. Oculus Rift is managed by great people who genuinely care about making the best experience possible for the masses because they are excited about the technology as well. They have already built a new prototype called Crystal Cove that's a huge enhancement form the previous dev kit that people were already amazed with. They are still continuing to improve the product and the experience and with the backing of Valve, we may see consumer versions in 2015. I cannot WAIT!!

Now the question is, how can I invest in Valve or Oculus? I think this technology will be HUGE. This will not only be huge in the video game space, this will make massive changes in other applications in different industries too.

Imagine having MOVIES in VR filmed with a 360 degree camera where you feel like you are actually there.
Imagine using Google Maps in VR where you can feel like you are flying around the world and see every place in the world in person
Imagine video chatting with a person except you can see from their point of view as if you ARE that person
Imagine doing tours or viewing the insides of houses, buildings, cars, etc as if you are actually there by just sitting at home
Imagine all the training you can reproduce through VR for all types of education content

This is all just the tip of the iceberg. This technology replaces television with telepresence... a whole new change that's pretty exciting imo

In a world of peaches, don't ask for apple sauce
Seems pretty awesome. Now to make some device that forms feelings you're holding something when you aren't to make people be able to control the weapons using their hands.

A screenshot of a powerpoint presentation by Valve in a closed environment while Oculus Rift is demonstrating their product out in the open at an expo? Methinks Valve is a bit jealous that they didn't get to build a working VR headset first.

They did have a private demo, and Valve's VR solution is just a tech demo/prototype of VR technology. An engineering proof of concept of what to expect in the coming years from this tech. They are not planning to release a consumer version on their own yet, they want to improve Oculus and other VR technology by using their discovery.

With Oculus, Sony and now Valve jumping on the VR bandwagon all trying to produce the best VR is a great thing. Fun times ahead of us.

The nature of the relationship between Valve and Oculus was not entirely clear to me. They’re certainly working closely together. Oculus talked about getting R&D help from Valve, while Valve named Oculus as the clear front-runner among consumer VR solutions. (Valve said they had no plans for a consumer product and that their demo system was not shippable due to its requirement that users plaster their walls with tracking markers.) On the other hand, Valve made it clear that their VR software work was not Oculus-specific, and mentioned that they want to be ready for when competitors start to arrive on the scene. I don’t think that means that they’re betting against Oculus in the short term, though. My impression was that Valve was taking a practical (if enthusiastic) attitude toward cultivating VR gaming, and they recognize Oculus as the obvious vanguard in that movement.

Valve is working on VR research that is supposedly a lot more realistic than Oculus Rift. They put together a demo that blew people away, even the ones who've used Oculus Rift.

VR research made by Valve have identified what technologies are required for computer generated VR content to be able to fool our brain to completely accept visual stimulus and process it as "real" image. Valve will NOT PRODUCE hardware, they are just interested in R&D that they will share with anyone, and will prepare Steam for this VR revolution.

Holy shit, that's my absolute dream for gaming, can you imagine playing a game like Supreme Commander like this? or Skyrim? I would actually enjoy RTS' if I could be more interactive and use my hands to command everything rather than just use a bloody mouse, it doesn't feel right to me.

This makes the Xbox kinect look like a piece of crap Tongue

Awesome, ty for the link.

Much better feedback than "simplest" glooves with motors.
Weight of objects and obstruction... I am impressed.  Shocked
