Storing the bitcoins into the offline wallet is quite good, but I'm not sure about the usage of jaxx. This has been quite familiar and making a bigger and better accessibility for all the other altcoins. Offline storage is the best one could use to make the holdings more secure.
Well, storing your bitcoin in offline wallet is like in storing in online wallet. However, in offline wallet also called hardware wallet you need to install it to your computer or laptop. Saving in offline wallet is very and you can a sure that you bitcoin or any coin are totally safe. Lastly, offline wallet has a private key that will help you to keep your bitcoin safe.

Ok I think its best for the money and piece of mind its not worth messing about.

Does anyone have the answer to my other question....... ?

If I send a coin to an offline wallet where does it go? Just hangs about in the either (excuse the pun)? until the wallet comes online again?

The Blockchain actually tracks the ownership of the coins. { very over simplified } The offline wallet only gives you the key to access those

coins on the Blockchain. We do not have banks {centralized entities} with digital ledgers that keep record of who owns what, it is all done via

the Blockchain. This Blockchain is distributed all over the world by people who are running a node. Your private key gives you the access to move

those coins from one person to the other {one address to another} and this is all recorded on the Blockchain.  Wink

I'm no expert but the coin sits on the block chain and awaits your private key when your ready to purchase something.  It doesn't go anywhere.

Might just get a Trezor its cheap and does a lot of coins..... saves the fuss!

That is a better idea than on your OP. Trezor or a ledger nano (or whatever product you choose) is much more secure than using a wallet installed on a USB. Those hardware wallets have great security that even if you use those wallet on a virus infested computer your coins will remain safe as is. On the other hand, if you use a USB flashdrive, then that would mean you have to access your files on the flash drive and exposing it to viruses.

It is not easy as it looks to store your bitcoins offline in a usb manually. If you are holding a huge amount of coins just purchase a offiline wallet from trezor or any other offline solutions you prefer. USB has many risks and if you screw up even one step you will lose all your coins, it's better to spend than regret in future

Most of these wallet providers only let you save your wallet data for recovery and not the private keys to your bitcoins. I bought a Trezor and I

have not regretted the decision since. It gives you full control over your private keys / seed for the wallet and it is one of the most secure

methods to store your coins. Go for it, you will be pleased with that purchase.  Wink

Where are the wallet files? if the .dat files are stored in the computer (most likley) then all you are doing is moving the program (or if your being silly, the shortcut). Meaning anybody could download a new wallet program onto your computer and open the wallets well if they had the passwords

No, I actually installed it on the usb stick I chose the location at time of installing the program, so all the jaxx folder and files are on the stick, but i dont know if the keys are on the stick or not?

Jaxx is not an open source wallet, you can't know for sure If they are sending your private keys to their servers or not. If you are planning to store ethereum or ERC20 tokens use Myetherwallet and print the wallet address and private keys with it, If its bitcoin then go with Bitaddress (same process) or OpenDime (a USB stick).

For security concerns, thats true and your wallet must be transparent with the code. Some of my wallet I am using electrum, i am talking btc wallet. Also, on Ethereum based token, MEW is popular. but beware also of phishing  sites, they are anywhere.

With the ongoing segwit implementation, be sure your wallet supports it. We do not want our hard earned btc will be compromised.

jaxx isnt open source but they have their code on the website........ but that could be a lie?!

I don't have millions to protect but just want to be as safe as I can be and seems to be so much miss info about.

Again this is the kind of thing that needs to be overcome if the crypo world ever wants to become mainstream, the public need/want simplicity (think Apple style simple!)

All I'm trying to ascertain in this thread is,
when using Jaxx where are my keys kept?
And if I have it installed on a usb stick that I unplug from the pc are they "safer" than just on the pc?
I also have a copy of tails on a USB stick that I could use the wallet on....?

side note; When I send coins to a wallet that is off line, where do the coins go?HuhHuh?

Yes, a good quality usb storage or hardware wallet is a good option to store bitcoins offline but I think even a securely generated paper wallet is not a bad idea either. However, one should take extreme precaution while generating paper wallet and even maintaining it as we have seen the cases that people have lost their funds when they sent amount in their newly generated paper wallet so if you are going to create any then don't ignore the security precautions.

If you want to be completely calm for your savings, do not use third-party software (besides what is necessary to create a wallet of course), create bitcoin wallet yourself, encrypt the private key and keep it on the flash drive.

HI, just wondering, if i use a wallet like Jaxx ( i know may have issues etc just for example)

and install it on a USB drive will this effectively store my coins offline?

cheers onis

If you have, say, over $300 in Bitcoin (and plan to use or get more), you ought to consider getting a good hardware wallet like Ledger, Trezor and/or DigitalBitbox (or if you are OK with a paper wallet: use that).

Because of the multiple attack vectors that thieves and hackers can use, it is smart to have your BTC in more than one wallet as well as more than one medium...

Yeah im not sure, I can see my public and private keys inside jaxx and even export them if i want but im just not clear where they are actually sitting?

If they are on the USB stick I have jaxx on? If i unplug that from the pc is it safer than it being on my desktop all  the time?

If you have funds in a paper wallet in Jaxx you can import the funds from it. Still many reviews in reddit and other community speaks that this wallet is shows the funds in btc, eth and others alts as 0.00$ balance after some months of usage. Hence, it is consider as a scammy option to use.

offline storage or cold storage is not just transferring your wallet to somewhere else. it is the whole process of creating hat wallet offline. and this offline doesn't mean turning your internet off. it means going on a clean computer or operating system at least which has never been connected to the internet.

in other words if you install Jaxx on your USB while on your common pc which is always online or if you transfer it to that USB on that computer, it means your setup is not a cold storage.

a simple solution would be to boot up inside a live Linux and do the wallet installation there.
