Oil is a natural resources so there's no way a natural resources is going to be a curse to a country unless those managing the country are thief that do not want their people to benefit from the natural resources that their country has. A natural resource when used correctly is meant to improve the lifes of the citizens of the country, it mightn't be able to make everybody rich but it should improve the lifes of those living in that country. Most people just want to be able to afford three squad male and they don't care about the wealths in the world but the evil politicians wants to enslaved everyone and become the only ones enjoying by selling out their nation.

This doesn't mean the natural resources was a curse, it just means those in power aren't supposed to be their because they don't have the best interest of the nation at heart. When a good leader takes over, the country is going to enjoy their natural resources. Countries that have been able to make good use of their oil are world richest countries right now. The world is being powered by oil and no country that has it should be suffering but unfortunately that isn't the world we find ourselves in because I'm writing from a country that has one of the best oils yet our minimum wages is around $45.

But anyways natural mineral resources like crude oil is a blessing to any society that have it. But it becomes a problem when the greedy politician handle the welfare of such society. Crude oil has caused alot of problem in many places and it is simply because of political manipulation. They shear public fund generated from the natural resources and bride some representative of the host community where the oils is generated and set confusion amongs the youth while they keep enjoying themselves. It's only when people that represent you in your region decide not to sell your right and accept bribe, that is when oil money will be a blessing and not a curse. Although this cases of crude oil crises always happens more frequent in Africa.

It's a blessing for countries that are drilling, refining and selling it and used the money for the betterment of their country, it's a course for countries that has it, sell the oil and then loot the money in other countries but oil discovery is global problem for everyone. We can't go green as long as we continue to use the products, gas emissions isn't affecting the countries that sell but it's everywhere because gasoline is used in almost all part of the countries.

It's just sad that there is no alternative best to oil consumption, it's now something we will use from now till only scientists knows when, cars consume more than 50% of the crude oil but electric cars are not upto the standard, the disadvantages that comes with it is extreme. If we are to even forget about oil, what about the gases, this is why oil will remain forever.

Discovery of oil has been blessings for certain region and curse for some because human being are so selfish they want to control every resources and we have seen what happened in countries like Iraq and their attack on Kuwait, these were for wider control of natural resources. Why does USA intervenes in the internal affairs of other Middle East nation? It's because of their oil.

But I don't deny it can transform lives of people in that region of planned and utilized to build more wealth out of it. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait are the nation's which we can take as an example and even Iraq in 70s. I think it's a boom which can be Bane if we have greedy leaders.

I must agree that long lasting ineffective behavior and also corruption are considered to be one of the major causes, figuratively natural resources are not always a curse, natural resources can increase high economic status for countries with efficient economic performance and strong institutions.

Great example would be UAE where the distribution of large oil revenues in the form of social and economic infrastracture, social services, education and health has raised the standard living of UAE citizens. UAE also has a business-friendly environment, with effective public administration for their control of corruption, a major example of avoinding the "resource curse".

The too many uses of crude oil in the society have made it to be a gemstone that everyone will love to have and control over them. The wealth that resides in crude oil cannot be overemphasised as it is termed the only means of some country to still be alive and striving today. Crude oil has brought about the richest nations today and what they boast of, it’s important that this resources don’t get to the wrong hands to avoid it being mismanaged. That's what we should do to avoid the outcome that OP is predicting - oil wars. Oil is only a half-measure. It should be treated like the finite resource it is. It's supposed to sustain us for a while and allow us to build an industry that is based on renewables and can sustain itself. One of those infinite sources of energy is fusion combined with degradable energy cells. Another is hydrogen since we can produce as much as we want, just can't do it in a way that's efficient enough to be cheap.

It's great that we have oil, but we should start conserving it more and we're actually doing that by adding alcohol to gasoline to reduce the demand.

These type of things could help everyone, and eventually people who will be good could end up with the position instead and properly run the country. It comes down to how capable the entity that manages the reserve, carbon footprint can be reduced in many ways, the war itself is because greed.

so far oil and any fossil fuel is still the most affordable, widely used energy that become the thing that moves global industry, there are electric energy indeed but the development of it isn't good enough for it to be utilized in the global scale industry.
it's more of a blessing in my opinion and not a curse, after all its just oil, just like how your country might be blessed with rare mineral, it all comes down to the government itself on how to manage it for the prosperity of its citizens.

Violence is a bi-product of greed and corruption! You can take an example of African continent. Despite holding the highest amount of natural resources, they are the poorest! yes, Europeans are also partly responsible for this because they wanted to continue with their colonies so they had created some Frankensteins to ignite the internal wars. But if Africa can really manage their resources well, they will emerge as the richest continent on the earth.

So natural resources are always a blessing. But when such wealth falls into the hand of incapable leaders, things turn into chaos. Then the countries like US, UK, France and China comes to promise a good life by investing billions of dollars and they starts capturing the resources when those leaders fail to pay back the debt.

If you look to middle east, oil has changed the lives of the people there except a few countries. If you look to Africa, natural resources has brought in issues for the citizens. All depends on how you handle it!

Discovering oil on your soil is the equivalent to find a fortune out of nowhere you can keep, but just as there are lottery winners that are unable to manage their finances and bankrupt themselves in a few years, the same could happen with a government that suddenly finds itself with a lot of money coming from their oil deposits, after all as lucrative as oil can be, it is a finite resource that at some point will run out, and the government needs to finds ways to replace that income once that happens or this could leave a huge hole on its finances.
