There are lots of uses for blockchain technology not only for digital currency. Like decentralized markets, another thing that blockchain can do is improving the voting system that is being used to vote or elect government officials, also in real estate and more. There are still more to discover. We may not see a lot of other uses of blockchain today but in the future it will sure be used in majority of businesses and other system. the technology of block chain is extremely helpful. The usage of block chain does not just limit to the usage around crypto currencies. firms are investing on research on block chain to use it in their business, as the usage will make it beneficial for their business. The block chain can be used as a database to store information of every firm.

In my sole opinion it have many use cases, but in common blockchain is for high availability trustless systems
The main usage of the blockchain technology is to support crypto currency and to verify the transactions which are made from them. Blockchain keeps the cryptography mostly secured.
You can use blockchain in real estate business, insurance, banking, money transfer, etc. ANy industry with large amount of numbers and papers can be improved by blockchain.

It's too early to tell for sure. Thousands of startups and companies tell us that they will use blockchain to solve almost any problem in the world, but so far there's no good working example that show how blockchain is used in some industry. Also, it's not entirely correct to compare different blockchains, because blockchain is very closely tied to its parent network, and there are lots of different project configurations - there are private and public networks, permissioned and permissionless, small network and big networks, hierarchical and peer-to-peer and so on - public and open blockchains like Bitcoin have proved themselves to be working and stable, but the same has not been proven for all those other kinds of experimental blockchains. Bitcoin has already repelled many attacks, time will tell whether other blockchains are resistant to attacks or not.
Energy generation,insurance brokers, drugs or healthcare records keeping are all benefiting from blockchain technology. Not forgetting shipping and logistics and other gaming platform utilizing blockchian for fair gambling.

There are a lot of uses for the blockchain tech that isn't limited only to cryptocurrencies. Other banks and big names in business are trying to see whether they can integrate the said tech into their own platforms and protocols, and the way I see it, blockchain would be very useful in logistics which require sorting and arranging data. Literally almost every automated service can integrate blockchain if the engineers can be so kind to learn about it and make things easier for the end-user. Our future would, I think, be largely blockchain dependent and may spark yet another industrial revolution.

Blockchain acts as a public ledger for crypto currencies. It is a decentralized encrypted database whose data can not be altered quite easily. Just serving as a public ledger for crypto currencies is not its only use. Look at the potential of the blockchain technology, we can implement it in various sectors of activities which requires transparency. For example, think about the voting system. If somehow all votes of individual can be recorded on the blockchain, there is no way the voting system can be rigged. 
Blockchain was first used to bitcoin / cryptocurrency but it's not only intended to be used there for this great piece of technology.
