Movies like this about slavery and racism and shit are always oscar bait. Not that I'm saying that's bad, but I look forward to watching it.

I'm not the film's biggest fan, but I can say with confidence that it was nominated because as a film, it pushed the boundaries of film language. It's fine if you don't understand that; it's just film theory lingo meaning that it changed some of the rules in cinematic storytelling. There's no other movie quite like it... At least on a technical level.

Beyond that, I too was like "Huh? Why do people think Sandra Bullock did a good job?" and then I learned why. Again, it's a lot more technical and as such, it might even get you to question why they call it acting. Basically, in order to get the shots right (think about the placement of light due to where the source of light is at any point in the story, along with the intricacies of the VFX), she had to hit her marks perfectly in the studio or else it wouldn't work. She rehearsed for hours and hours and hours... Not to get her dialogue right, but to know exactly where to be (not a centimeter further) at the exact right moment (a second later might ruin the shot).

I honestly don't think it'll win much other than the technical awards it's up for. I think Cate Blanchett makes for a better winner, too.

I have "delicate sensibilities" because I'd like to see the Academy Awards select some films featuring black themes that aren't about them being victims or dimwits that need the help of charitable white people to succeed? I'm glad you can enjoy all these movies, but I don't think that Hollywood promoting the idea that blacks are second class citizens is healthy for anyone.

You know, slavery sucks and it's still even practiced in parts of Africa to this day (not by white people, incredibly enough!) but nobody I know has owned slaves, nor have their parents, or grandparents, great grandparents, or great great grandparents. If we all want to live in an egalitarian society, we need to stop focusing on racial strife and promote films that aren't about fucking slavery, black people being whipped, and fucking butlers and mammies!

I think this is guaranteed it win. I bet the Globes and won!

I've seen all of the movies and think this has the best chance to win. The plot is so heavy, and the acting is way too good to pass up over American hustle, which might be the only movie that could beat out 12 years a slave.

I think it was a shame that Chiwetel was not giving the award but Matthew did play a good role and did work hard to look the way he did.

I'm betting money on the Oscars and betting on 12 years a slave again!

I'm not offended at all. But I would be if I were black, because these films represent nothing but black shortcomings throughout American history. It's a very clear picture. Blacks are either an underclass of slaves for white people, or they are servants for white people, or they need the help of whites to get a proper education because they're abandoned by their own mothers and fathers.

no it wouldn't because i went to a pretty good private school the best my parents could afford when it came time to talk about the history of this countries enslavement murder rape and torture of black people they about summed it up in 2 pages so i actually enjoy (for lack of a better word) watching and learning how people of that day and time suffered and how it came to be that black people were thought of as lower then animals but that's just me but i do know my experience is isn't the one sorry they cant cater movies to your delicate sensibilities

Hence why I said, "an Oscar nod". Doesn't matter if they won or not, the fact that these are the only films representing the black experience in the US that are being selected for accolades by the Hollywood elite exposes their racist way of thinking. Which is the ultimately irony, given that they see themselves as progressive types, or "good white people".
