Oh definitely.  I'm not expecting any sort of return on investment from this coin, not for a while.  Volatility is part of the turf, especially with new coins, but I see it as a cryptocurrency breakthrough, which I hope moves other people who are considering unloading more cutandpaste coins to cease and desist.  Unless there's something new or unique about the coin, I'm not interested. But that's me.  I'm most intrigued by how crypto currencies in general will change the world. ( enter evil laughter here ) Smiley

good stuff! I have high hopes for primecoin, as its development, like people have already said, uses all that extra energy ( did you know mining in the u.s. costs us 80+k in electricity a DAY? That's only going to get higher) to work.  The most intriguing thing I found was concerning a computational program from Stanford to help find cures to some diseases.  The other half is to find longgggg prime numbers, which I guess is a big thing in the math world??Wink were talking world record, million digit long primes. I guess primecoin has already slashed a world record for long primes.   It beats me as child with the Guinness bookofworld records out, trying to stand on one foot to beat the record, which was days long. Smiley

But seriously, it's the first coin that isn't being mindless about all that expendable energy, and I for one applaud that.
I think that attracts a lot of people to bitcoin.  Also the fact that prime numbers are a mathematical resource for cryptography has an obvious allure to crypto currency enthusiasts.  I believe primecoin though will remain a very volatile currency though for the near future.

Alright, left this stickied a few days longer than I had intended to, but no harm done. I will however be unstickying it now, there are over 500 votes at the moment, which should be a large enough sample size to get somewhat accurate information. You are free to continue on with regular conversation about the poll or whatever, and use a daily bump to keep the thread in the public if you wish, just letting you know that in order for my "Sticky anything that could be considered important, interesting, or useful" policy to work, I have to make sure that I take down things that have been stickied after a while, or eventually the entire front page will end up stickied.
No problem, thank you for keeping it up long enough to get a fairly accurate read on the state of things.  I found it very informative.

We didn't buy our votes.. unlike certain coins that shall remain unnamed for the moment.

Hey man, you seem to have conveniently forgotten the other half of your GLD chart. Allow me to inform everyone else what you neglected to mention.

Nice rise but nothing out of the ordinary.

Also, you're labelling DGC as a pump and dump? Are you aware of how paper thin the asks are on cryptsy? it takes all of 5 BTC to make the price raise 300%, The low volume on cryptsy makes it a terrible place to orchestrate such things. What you see there are investors buying up the price while multipool jumps on the %profitability/BTC then dumps it right back down. I was in fact one of those investors, and I've yet to dump what I've bought. Kinda bummed on that but I believe I'll see a return on my investment eventually.

For a pump and dump to be successful it has to span more than several days to build up buy volume, not spike up, plateau, then fall right back down. You're only losing money to fees that way.

The only thing that really stinks about this poll is how Novacoin is in the top four. Oldest scamcoin in history, I'm sure Balthazar is enjoying life with his horde of premined coins, especially since it mints maybe ~1300 coins a day. Can't believe that garbage is still on btc-e..

There seems to be a lot of pressure building up within the altcoin world, maybe the strain of having too many is finally making a point? Fight, fight for your coin-god!  Roll Eyes
1 month ago the comments made about Primecoin today would have been made about Goldcoin.  Of course, one big thing to remember: Goldcoin did so poorly against BTC that it was converted to LTC trading on Cryptsy.  This means Goldcoin is in the minor league while Primecoin is still in the majors.  1 BTC = ~35 LTC = ~154 XPM = ~55,000 GLD.

In the words of the immortal Stan Lee: 'nuff said.

It seems like the big four are currently (in order of votes):
1 Litecoin
2 Primecoin
3 Digicoin
4 Novacoin

Then there are those deserving of honorable mention (in order of votes):
5 Cosmoscoin
6 YACoin
7 Goldcoin
8 PPCoin
9 Feathercoin
10 Quarkcoin &  Namecoin (tied)

I am surprised by these results so far.  First, I never even heard of Digicoin before this vote and it #3 on the list!  I'll need to look into it.  Also, Primecoin is really close to Litecoin in terms of popularity being a relatively new coin.  It also has a lot of threads for it in this forum (I myself was getting confused and made an aggregate thread for the coin at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/xpm-the-unofficial-primecoin-overview-thread-all-information-in-one-place-264115

Other new coins that are surprisingly high on the list are Cosmocoin, Goldcoin and Quarkcoin.

I get the feeling this is aimed at DGC. Normally I just try to ignore FUD, but for whatever reason I really just don't feel like letting this slide today.

A few things:
  • DGC has the 10th largest market cap (coin price x number of coins in circulation) of any cryptocurrency, and the second largest market cap of any coin released in the last three months. By the way, it's about 5 times that of goldcoin's. Additionally, it has consistently been in the top handful of coins on cryptsy in terms of trade volume in BTC/day every day for at least the last month.
  • DGC has an extremely active community, with one of the most active IRC channels, behind only #bitcoin and #litecoin (btw, join us at #digitalcoin on irc.freenode.net---webchat link is in my signature), as well as the longest announcement thread of any alt-coin in recent memory.
  • DGC has a currently ongoing fundraiser where over 75,000 DGC (~2000 USD) has been raised to assist with development costs from over 30 unique users. This is particularly significant as DGC was one of the fairest coin launches in recent memory with no "premine" or "instamine", and no users were able to amass huge amounts of DGC for free by being an "ultra-early-adopter". All of those donations were hard-earned or bought by the dgc community and given to the development team because they believe so strongly in DGC's future.
  • DGC has one of the most active development teams of any altcoin. Currently in development are a fiat exchange/payment gateway as well as a "bank" which will issue DGC options. The DGC (and ARG) exchange is slated to be released within the few weeks, and the bank following shortly after.
  • The most recent DGC "pump and dump" was anything but. Rather, a number of users in various exchange trollboxes sought to perpetuate a rumor that btc-e was adding DGC when they removed CNC, and this rumor caught on. This led to panic buying and then a resulting market correction back down to DGC's long term support level of ~.0003 dgc/btc. Since reaching this level, dgc has shown no indication that it is going to break it. By the way, no one involved with the development of DGC had anything do do with these rumors and did not even acknowledge them when they were ongoing

Basically, what I'm saying is, you've suggested that there's no reason anyone would think DGC is an up-and-coming cryptocurrency enough to vote for it in this meaningless poll unless they were paid to do so. This could not be farther from the truth. Shit, we (as a community) haven't even actively been promoting this poll other than a couple folks in IRC mentioning it a time or two and one post in the digitalcoin "ANN" thread. Your statements illustrate a clear ignorance of reality and an unwillingness to research your claims before you make them.

Oh, and lol at your logic that "because GLD is going up now, it will never stop going up!" I suppose the name "goldcoin" is fitting in this regard.

Well, Primecoin is having a lot of "momentum" lately. And litecoin is pretty established.
But as of Digicoin... that is indeed a surprise  Smiley
