Every time you get 2 merit, you will have 1 sMerit which you can send to other users. This means that for every 1 merit you receive, you will get 0.5 sMerit and it will be accumulated every time you get a merit. So far, each sMerit send to another user has a minimum value of 1, and a maximum of 50 sMerit in a month for the same user.

I hope you can understand it correctly, and it's not what you think so far. Sending and receiving merit is not limited to ranking, that's not true because as long as you have sMerit then you can always spend it on every post you deem quality. You can also receive merit from users of any rank as long as they deem your post worthy of it.

JangoUnchained, when you click on merits in your profile, you will see the following message:

''You have received a total of ... merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have ... sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future.''

I would say that everything is very well explained here.
This is the key part: ''There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you''.
So, you got the merits not to keep them to yourself, but to reward good posts of other users on the forum.
Other users have rewarded you with merits for your good posts and now is the time for you to do the same Cheesy

You can decide how to spend your sMerit and it can be on your choice for any reason but spend it on the post which actually deserves. Even a newbie can earn 500 merits so he will have 250 sMerit to spend which means he can spend all of them with no time frame and nor restrictions.

In fact, OP, you will soon feel a pattern, the more often you give merit, the more you will receive. There is a topic in the meta, whether it is necessary to return merit to the one who gave or appreciated you as a token of gratitude. Although there are many denials written there, that it is not necessary to do this, the psychology of people is such that having received merit, a person wants to do something similar back. So don't hold your merit as something of value, just if you see a post worthy of your attention, give it merit. By doing so, you show others that the post may be interesting for others to read.

You can use your smerit (sendable merit) not merit. Don't misunderstand two different things. You can only send your smerit to others, not merit. But they will receive merit. You will have smerit as half of merit you receive and you can send your smerit to others.

There are many ways people use their smerit but the best one is send it to constructive members with their quality posts, not fancy ones. Sometimes people do send smerit to fancy posts but it is not actually the most appropriate ways to do. It results in arguments in the community as well.

At first when I saw your topic, I immediately had the misconception that your thoughts could be that merits are just shared using some form of formula. Not until I read your thread that I got the point you were making. Before i get to that, I'll like to note to every beginner out there that merits aren't shared except, the Smerits that is given to Merit Sources.

To answer your question @OP, on either you could start meriting others... There is no criteria or procedure towards doing this. The only criteria that might exists resides with you and that is, your good judgment. Merits out to be given to quality posts, not minding if its a one liner or an art. It just have to clarify doubt, interest you in a way or perhaps is appealing to your sense of judgment and then, you merit as you deem fit.

Smerit is another word for personal appreciation for someone's posts that they consider quality and provide a problem-solving solution. Smerit distribution does not limit account ratings because if you own 1 smerit then you have the right to give it to constructive posts in general or in your own opinion. Smerit has a positive impact as it motivates one to post quality for active contribution to all members.

No, it's not early or late to send merits. If who you are going to merit deserves it then why hesitate to send that person a merit. You will be able to send a forum member a merit if you have available smerit. Have you made a research on how to check your smerits available?. Base on what I found in your merit transaction is you haven't sent any merit which as of now you have 6 smerits that you can reward to whoever you think to reward it to base on your criteria. Anyways, congratulations on ranking up to member rank.

The forum encourages you to spend your smerit, holding it isn't helpful for anyone. So you are free to spend your merits on good contributors. It's not sharing merit exactly, you are meriting someone that you think his post is useful for you or for the community. Don't hesitate to send merit to others, it will help increase merit circulation. But try to avoid merit abuse.

Actually, the forum encourages users to send merit to quality posters. That's how people got motivated for their contribution to this forum. You have the freedom to use your sMerits but just don't send them to any spam post or any post that is not helping or contributing anything to the forum. Sending merit to any spam post(example: Bounty POA comments) could identify your account as a farming account and you could get red trust for that if any DT member notices or report that.

You merit whoever you think deserves it, whenever you feel it's appropriate. DOn't think of merit as a ranking-up tool, but rather a 'thank you' to the person who offered something that had value to you. So don't fret if you think you are ''underqualified'' to send merits, just keep on engaging on the forum and whenever you feel you should give a thumbs up for the knowledge they shared, just go for it.

That's not true, the OP can use the smerit he has whenever he wants when he finds quality posts even if his current account is still member rank. The OP doesn't need to wait for a higher rank and collect more sMerit before using it because everyone will have a different speed to gain merit and rank up depending on their abilities and knowledge. What if the rank OP becomes a full member next year, is this the right time for him to spend his sMerit all this time? And honestly, I don't agree with this one.

The OP only needs to spend sMerit on posts he deems to be quality and it's not just about posts he likes. So there's no reason for the OP to hoard sMerit when he actually finds a high quality post or something he finds useful and valuable, "even if it doesn't break any rules".

Firstly congrats on your upgrade to a member and secondly you shouldn't be hoarding merit if you want to keep the cycle going well. There's no point in hoarding merit as they won't benefit you and I think you are advised to use them on posts that you think are quality but not for your alt (if any).

So far you have earned 12 merit, meaning you have 6 smerit that you can use for other users on posts that you find quality, helpful and constructive. But I don't understand why you haven't used any of them so far, are you too afraid to appreciate other people's posts with merit?

Congratulations to you, JangoUnchained. It's not too early to send merits, if there was such a rule then the merit system would have been adjusted to suit that rule. I don't think it's fair to hoard merits if you come across a good post you should merit it irrespective of your rank or that of the account you want to merit. There are loads of quality content on the forum, spending smerits should not be a burden to you besides your smerits are not much.

Just don't send them to your alts if you have one.
There is no such thing as "too early" nor "too late" to send merits to others. Feel free to award it to a deserving post if you see one.

No point in hoarding them though as mentioned in your merit page

Regardless of rank you're free to send merit to starting from newbie to legendary but it has to be a quality post you're sending to and ensure that such post is worth deserving it.
