What about making it possible to grab phpBB source of each post, no matter if the topic is closed or not? Sometimes, that kind of feature is useful, and it can be done manually, but it would be much easier, if it would be possible to get it out of the box.
BPIP browser extension works very good for this purpose, and you are getting other useful extras in the same package like banned/inactive/archived status, DefaultTrust position, links to archived posts/topics, etc.

Don't mind me if this isn't what you asked for, I just wanted to share Smiley
I would prefer the Bpip extension feature over this long process haha, BTW thanks for sharing this manual way with us as well. It can help those who don't want to use Bpip or other extensions due to privacy issues but AFAIK there is no such issue with this BPIP extension so its better to use it over this procedure. People like auto things, if you could combine this process into an automatic tool then we are more than happy to use it, but one is already there so why not use it?

Overall, speaking to OP, I don't really quote such topics (locked ones) but mostly when I have to give the source of such locked topics I copy the link to that thread and put the thread link in the Quote tags to make it clickable and then put those words I wanted to add in these Quote tags. Another way is to add quote tags and copy the text from a closed thread, and pase in the tags on your post and then write a word source under it and hyperlink it with that threads. People would know what you are trying to say.

There are at least two guides to do this, one mentioned above and another one from @hosseinimr93.

A guide to quoting posts in locked topics

I knew this trick for a long time but forgot to add it to my thread, Bitcointalk posting etiquette. I am going to do it now.

it can be done manually
In case you didn't know yet, this is the easiest method to keep the date correct:
Find the post you want to quote, and click on its title to reload the page to that specific post. Then copy the message number (last 8 digits) from the URL.

Then, in the thread you want to reply in, click on "quote" on any post. In the URL bar on the new page, paste over the 8 digits after "quote=" with your new 8 digits. Press enter.

To ensure the quote links properly, you then need to take the 7 digits after "topic=" from the original post (as in step 1), and paste them over the digits after "link=topic=" in the body of your reply.
But as you can see, I don't use it because it's too much work.

but it would be much easier, if it would be possible to get it out of the box.
Agreed. I don't like installing extensions.

There was a script, created around 2020 by @minifrij though according to the title of the script, A kinda shitty script for quoting posts in locked topics, it might not really function as expected if you run it. The user @minifrij on his thread clearly stated that he just used his spare time to write the script and so somethings might not function properly like time quote or the rest. And has no plans of fixing it.

I used to have a way of quoting locked threads though it was a hard process as I had to create the links my self and convert the time to utc based. Here is a breakdown though

1. First you get your quote BB code
Code:
[quote=][/quote]

2. You copy the link on the locked thread or message you want to quote. For example
topic=5484607.msg63637766#msg63637766

3. insert it into the quote using this format
Code:
[quote author=username link=of the thread you copied date=][/quote]

4. The next part which is the most confusing is the date. Normally, when you quote a topic, it converts the date and time on that thread for instance May 12, 2024, 08:52:56 PM into the unix timstamp format for example
locked thread

7. Last step, you copy the text written by op you want to quote and insert at center of your quote column

That's all. This method is kind of restricted though to only posts with text based. As for post having BB codes or tables, you would only be able to create the quote but would not have the codes used on the tables. It's just something I practiced a long time ago just incase though you can use it as well.

No need to manually select urls of posts from locked topics anymore, you can get the feature of quote to clipboard after installing Bpip Extension .

Once you installed the BPIP extension in your browser you will see the option shown as above, just click it and paste where you want to quote it.
