If you look at the history of Darkcoin/Dash, you'll see their developer, Evan, spent quite a bit of time coding up Dark Gravity Wave.
Without citing a quote, you'll have to trust me he said he had spent 12 hours a day for three weeks on it.
It solves problems we experience right now with iCoin.
One example is if you happen to look at the current block and then see a high difficulty -- you might notice the block number doesn't increment for a few days... and then if you throw hash at it, the next block is even more difficult. This is system emergence from Kimoto's Gravity Well and we can do better to keep the blocks moving regularly. Remember, no new blocks means no new transactions for getting into and out of an exchange.
