Crazy idea:

How about some kind of Bitcoin 'hunt', with a number of thumb drives hidden across the city containing BTC (enough to be newsworthy). Would probably need to give hints regarding their location.

Might be way too expensive, but wanted to throw the idea out anyway. Maybe the hunt could be sponsored to cover part (or all) of the cost.

I remember hearing a about a similar thing that happened, where a bunch of keys to new cars were hidden across the city. It generated a frenzy of people searching and a huge amount to media coverage.

I reckon it'd be a great way to generate awareness of digital currency, and demonstrate a clear benefit: that large amounts of money can be conveniently stored on small devices.

If it's going to be a casino how about seeing if they'll stage a game using some sort of physical bitcoin tokens rather than chips as a publicity stunt?

Nice idea shads. My Nephew Andrew, is one of the head croupiers at Crown, so I might ask if he can pull some strings.  Grin

Groovy... Just something to keep in mind, there may be some legal barriers or complications due to the insane amount of regulation in the gaming industry so keep in mind the option of a 'staged' game that uses bitcoin styled tokens but without actually attaching a redeemable value to them.  It would still be a good camera shot but avoid said complications.  Of course if it could be real game that'd be much better...

still working on a venue, but hoping to get Bitcoins to be accepted by the venue for the weekend and getting one of the exchanges to do some "merchant services" for them to turn the Bitcoins back to fiat Smiley

Well done Graet!  Wink

Hi guys,
Some fantastic ideas coming forward Cheesy keep em coming Cheesy

Re the 'name' thing: I had a little brain fart along the lines of: The Aussie Bitcoin Show 'N' Tell. so as to not set it up for anti-climax (not that I've got anything against climax  Grin), but at least it avoids the words 'conference' (which sounds like a sit down show, with lots of speakers) and Expo, which sounds like a multi-million dollar extravaganza. It sounds like it's probably more like a 'convention', but do we want to sound that formal? A cross between a swap-meet, convention and a big meetup just sounds like 'Show 'N' Tell' to me, and that's just lots of fun.

This morning I met with an Event Organiser - had never heard of BTC but "gets the idea" Cheesy
he is useing his contacts to find a good (available at short notice) venue.

WOW!  Shocked That's just soooo uber-professional. You are a legend for doing this.

Suggestions include forming a "management committee" and dividing work into 2 "fields"  Administrative and Technical - volunteers needed.

Needed urgently is a "Bitcoin Infomercial" - contact me if you have knowledge skills to help with this, I have been given some good ideas on what to include, Suggestions welcome here too.

Hmm.. I'll contact you about that.

I envisage some talks by "Keynote Speakers" to be webcast a "panel show" from the keynote speakers and other knowleadgable Bitcoiners, this will need to be streamed live and have an interactive component so non-attendeers can ask questions as well.

Good idea. Let's make sure the rest of the world can be involved and especially curious new comers, with their predictable raft of skeptical questions. Best if we're ready to handle them and give'em the straight dope. (No not dope straight from Silk Road  Tongue).

We are also planning to have tables and or booths that Bitcoin businesses can hire to advertise thier business but also some general interest tables, hopefully someone can bring a rig down we can setup and mine with Wink again ideas and offers welcome.

I'm sorry to say that I won't be bringing a solar powered FPGA mining board to show off. That's because instead I'll be bringing four count'em, that's FOUR Dominator X6500 boards. That's a total of eight FPGA's with a combined hash rate of over 700 MH/s. That's running at about 1/10th of the equivalent GPU wattage, hopefully on a single 130-150w solar panel. That should be running from software on a notebook connected to WiFi.

Which reminds me. We need to ensure that we get some good reliable WiFi, support down there at the site. I'll take that ball and run with it if you like, (and if it kills me) OK? I'm trying to set up some rapport with Internode, an all Aussie company that helped found the Australian internet backbone. I'm sure they can be called upon to deliver reliable internet support for the event. In fact I'd love to get Simon Hackett to come along and learn about the exciting bitcoin revolution. I'll do what ever I can to this end. It would be great to have the ear of the largest privatively owned ISP in Australia and get them backing bitcoin, to the hilt. I'd love to see Aussies  being able to pay for their internet access with bitcoin. Internode is Adelaide based, so the ball is kind of in my court already.

We NEED to appeal to the general public, grey suit financial types and ppl already into Bitcoins

Could everybody drop a personal email to the manager of their financial institution? That could at least cause some interest in lower management, and trickle back to a small handful of middle management types. Just a simple invite and link to existing info should do.

This is a great opportunity to get the Bitcoin word out not only in AU but worldwide if handled correctly. We plan to!

We'll do what we can (give it our best shot) and that mean's a lot to us Aussies. Hmmm?

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
Thank you. I meant to say Faucet actually:
https://freebitcoins.appspot.com

Which won't look as impressive as a fountain of course but sticks with tradition Smiley

That is very generous to offer to donate the coins but I've never heard of leather coins before. I'm definitely interested in buying a leather bitcoin wallet to replace my aging mosimo wallet.

You're in luck! You can have both--fountain and facet. The leather coins I mentioned have not been tooled yet because I'm still waiting for the dies to be cut. This hair-brain idea I have about leather Bitcoin coins has already cost me close to $1,000, and that doesn't include the leather, let alone the labor once I/Martin go into production. Lately, I've been thinking about branding the back sides with a numbering system. At any rate, the first 200 go to Australia for the Facet Fountain. Follow the link above the image and you'll see/learn it'll be a simple project, yet impressive.

As far as you wanting a wallet, follow the link in my signature and/or PM me. Thank you kindly, caston.

I have a circular display stand I would be happy to bring to the Conference/Expo to be adorned with various bitcoin wares of various individuals who either won't be there, or don't have the wherewithal to justify a separate boot/stand of their own. It's an ex Bodyshop stand, and it looks something like this (although this is just a similar image):

I'm thinking for the likes of Bruno and his leather-wares and others who have miscellaneous bitcoin goods to provide a little showcase of variety that can be bought with BTC. I suppose that means I would have suckered myself into taking orders for the displayed merchandise, but, eh... so be it. The stand also has a transparent plastic circle mounted (vertically) above that will be perfect to put the traditional bitcoin design on. I could even install some lighting in it to add a bit of the wow factor!

I will also (almost surely) have an interesting technological display of my own to unveil at the event. I'm buying one of the first commercially available FGPA mining boards, which I plan to hook up to solar panels. If all the legal stuff goes to plan, I can also announce what I'm doing with it. I'm looking forward to this immensely (read: getting excited).

Look forward to seeing you all there.

I was just thinking could we make a real life bitcoin fountain containing physical coins minted with the bitcoin logo? could sell for 1 BTC each perhaps or possibly free if we get a sponsor

First off, I like your site, caston. I will donate my first 200 coins made for the Bitcoin Fountain. Of course, they will be hand tooled leather coins. Don't worry about them getting wet. When the leather dries, the coins will take on a completely different patina. I'm currently in the process of having the stamp/die designed, thereby easing the tooling process. I didn't want to let the cat out of the proverbial bag prematurely, but since it's for a good cause, and this is a great thread, I decided What the Hell!

Keep up the good work on this Bitcoin Aussie Conference (bacpo.org; bacxpo.com; bacexpo.com).
