I noticed that Ripple had succeeded in shifting Ethereum during September even though Ripple could only shift Ethereum in a very short time but that was a great achievement for Ripple and of course Ripple had a high trading volume.

I think this is a good signal from Ethereum and Ripple, I believe in the next few months there will be many surprises from Ethereum and Ripple, I think it's time to buy Ripple and Ethereum.

this is temporary. now will the growth of eth and ripple will roll back, and maybe even lower. just ripple came positive news, so he rose against the backdrop of a falling market. when the positive news on eth comes out, it will leave everyone far behind.

we know they have different technologies, but ripple is superior in innovation, always making updates and diligently doing new partnerships. but all of these things can't make ripple better than ethereum and if we talk about market cap then the ripple has taken the ethereum position several times, but ethereum quickly takes it back. both have different supporters, ripple is supported by many banks and financial companies, while ethereum is supported by tokens erc20 which has many great projects.

apart from all that, we all have different opinions for these two altcoins and I think choose it based on the research, beliefs and feelings you have.

so many replies! thanks everyone for engaging!! & honestly i've already learned quite some!
it seems, in general, enthusiasts, (sample size is small of course; i'm only referring to the who read & posted on this tread) are more interested in ethereum;
&, at the very least, xrp seems to be battling uphill for the popularity! (whether xrp cares for that or whether their market is affected by that is another topic!!)

i see quite a number of replies pointing out xrp's centralization & are not totally for it!

concidering this:
[...] By contrast, Ripple is totally centralized and you cannot really say that it is a cryptocurrency at all. [...]

& this:
[...] however i do think a cryptocurrencies can be centralized and still be a cryptocurrency.[...

this is quite an interesting topic on its own: whether decentralization is a key factor in defining a cryptocurrency!

nevertheless one thing is obvious & that is, the majority of the posts are bullish in general about the cryptocurrency market, as a whole; which is, again, interesting in its own rights!

[...] Ethereum will comeback and be more valube compared to Ripple if the ICO market gets liven up again so eth could rise.
& about the above! i've been thinking the same thing; last year icos were the movers & shakers of the market but that's so 2017, per se!
now a days anywhere you look, whatever moves the market is the news of regulation & institutional money!
i not sure how i like that; but well!

If Ethereum can accommodate 1million per TXS im sure the price could be 10x from its current price. XRP are manipulated by bankers and alot of central banks wants it. Though if decentralization could be the future use then I will pick Ethereum over XRP

Just as many parties have discussed that Ripple has many surprises, so it must be applauded for its significant growth lately. Competition to win 2nd place which is currently still occupied by Ethereum becomes viral talk. I can only remain silent while monitoring what is happening. Then give a little that you are right.

Ok!!
So you have been keeping your eyes on coinmarketcap since a few months and enjoying this battle. I would have agreed calling this as a battle, if this would actually be like first 2-3 times. But this year itself this fight for second place took already 3 times, happened the same way last year too, but every single time ETH gets back to the 2nd position in matter of hours and sometimes in matters of seconds too.
Personally, I am not a fan of XRP for the fact that the circulating supply is only 30% and rest all are held by the team and which are and will be used to sell XRP to the banks and other financial institutes they will be working on on way cheaper rate then market.
Supporting Ripple  is like supporting Banks.

I do not like Ripple. There is no limited supply for this altcoin and actually XRP has nothing to do with crypto currencies. They have totally different idea. I cannot understand people, that are holding Ripple instead of Ethereum.

Recently, Ripple's been pushing hard for the title of the second crypto!

i've been checking coinmarketcap 50 times a day past few months! & in the past couple of weeks -as of writing of this post- this is exactly the 3rd time Ripple has become the 2nd biggest crypto!

Every time it's been the same: Ripple surges, Ether follows in a few hours to prove dominance; Ripple wave breaks, Ether is back in its position but its market feels semi-stagnant & bored, the Ripple market stays excited & the process repeats!

I can read articles but i'm not much technically inclined!
technologically speaking, does ripple have any actual advantage over ethereum -for ripple to take over ether for good- to settle in the 2nd place?!
Or in terms of technology, they each have their own niches & their market value is mostly derived from their application & outside investment in their application; in that case, which of these two technologies you think are better developed & better marketed? which one you think would be better suited to invest in?

Now i'm curious about this because i do have a policy to save my extra pennies in the form of 3 biggest cryptos every month & would prefer to adjust the percentage of my pennies going into different cryptos less speculatively or emotionally & more scientifically! I don't have the science though; but i'm positive there are a large number of people here who do!!! (also great number of ppl with ulterior motives! i know that too!)
So u knw; give anyone who's interested in this topic your expert opinion or suggest reads or just battle it out! thanks for your participation in advance!

(yes i knw, old acc haven't posted in ages! how come now? whats with that? been transferred?! nope! just long ass family problem that is now resolved & spare time being spent productively, hopefully!)
(title, Tekken pun intended!)

sorry for the long post!  Tongue

I believe the real battle is us with emotion that we call " control ", one wrong step can make you loss in big value. Ripple and ether is only product that we can use to make money but because many transactions will create new position every second, you can't trust it as the next battle. If you see opportunity take it but if not leave it. In this situation many people see little/ small moving as great opportunity but I see it as possibility. Think again before do action, good luck all.

Tough competition going in these two coins and ripple is fighting to get 2nd spot in cryptocurrency. But eth is more popular than ripple, because ripple is a centralised coin which is operated by bank. Let's see who is going to conquer this in near future.

In my opinion no battle here. Ripple just took second place in terms of capitalization and it means nothing. Ethereum shows poor performance for quiet market and that's good. As soon as the market starts to grow at the previous pace again ETH will be the second coin. I am convinced of this.

If you ask me, marketcap doesn't mean too much and the race for the second place is also not important. What is important is how these two technologies will prove themselves in the long run.

technologically speaking, does ripple have any actual advantage over ethereum -for ripple to take over ether for good- to settle in the 2nd place?!

I don't see any technological advantage of XRP over Ethereum. It is also worth mentioning that technologically their platforms are totally different. It can be argued that the ETH blockchain is flawed, but even the way it is now is much more in line with the general idea how a crypto public ledger should look like. By contrast, Ripple is totally centralized and you cannot really say that it is a cryptocurrency at all. When you invest in XRP, you are basically investing in a company, which may be fine if that's what you want to do. Ethereum, on the other side has its own problems. Depending on whether or not they manage to solve them (e.g., will PoS work as it's supposed), it could be a good investment, or a total disaster.

I believe that both, xrp and eth are like investing in a company.

I agree with most of what you said, however i do think a cryptocurrencies can be centralized and still be a cryptocurrency.
Centralization is a characteristic thay will give more resilience and resistance against regulations, coercion, government interference, etc... But if xrp doesn't want this resistance (basically because it doesn't need it, as it will play by government and banks rules) that's not a problem and it will continue yo be a cryptocurrency.

If xrp makes someone angry, it can be shut down easier than other cryptocurrencies

Yeah now really a tough fight between ripple and eth. But in my opinion, it's hard for ripple to continue its potion over the eth. Just in time of price surge ripple get second place. Nowadays ETH has not as much growth but in the long-term, it has a good future. So, For the long term, ETH will be ahead of ripple.

I think xrp has a good momentum to be able to take over ethereum's position, but I believe the ethereum project will prepare something new to strengthen its position again, this is good for both altcoin competition

Both coins have different use cases, and in the crypto world, ETH has more application than XRP will ever have. ETH is decentralized, XRP is not. I don't really see any battle or one to look out for. Just a little spike in the price of ETH will see it reclaiming its spot in 2nd place

I didn't know they were this close, I thought there was a huge difference between them but apparently with the increase in the price of ripple the other day they got too close.

As long as ripple continues to make deals with the companies and banks and increase their value the ripple will go up like the shares of a successful company whereas ethereum will stay like this as long as ICO market is dried up and not going anywhere. Ripple will win this until their success goes along and eth has no ICO market to serve for.

Ethereum will comeback and be more valube compared to Ripple if the ICO market gets liven up again so eth could rise.

I rarely use ripple specifically for short trades, some of my crypto assets are ETH and it's token inside its blockchain, close battle for capitalization but the fact that eth had been more adopted by companies and groups who wants to utilize the smart contracts to their campaigns and other motives, there's so many plans to innovate Ethereum for transactions and other problem to solve.

whatever happens I will still support ethereum, because I know ethereum is an altcoin that will give a surprise. while ripple, I'm not interested in this coin because I once regretted buying it. imagine when I think ripple will fly, in fact they are destroyed.

The competition between Ripple and Ethereum as the second most valuable ata cryptocurrency money continues. Although the technology used is the same that uses blockchain technology, the sectors they target are different. but to compare both Ripple and ETH performance, the answer is the best Ripple because the transactions done with Ripple (XRP) are faster and cheaper.
But the ETH is currently taking a step into "Proof-of-Stakes and improving their" Sharding "and" Plasma "which might be better compared to Ripple. Both of these coins have a bright and good future in the blockchain industry.

This is going to be the ultimate battle. Both of the coins are actively being developed and both are finding new horizons to expand.
Ripple being centralized has agility in decisions making and hence better profit on each deal. While ETH is slow on development, it's decentralization nature makes it transparent and dependable.
