Personally I keep XRP on https://www.kraken.com/
XRP/Ripple does need a better Exchange/Wallet network. If it gets it, you'll see upward motion come along with it. If not, then this is a patient hold with hopefully rewards for the faithful. I'm beginning to think that XRP/Ripple may always be primarily a "bank/exchange" accessed coin though. It seems like that is the plan. But that could do it if just one major bank starts putting it out there as a currency alternative, then more would follow. A matter of time IMHO.

As far as I know there are no (useful) offline wallet for XRP. Storing your coins on exchanges is quite risky (e.g. Cryptsy ) so I wouldn't recommend that. I think the officially recommended site is your best choice.
Cryptsy is an example why I don't trust online wallets.
I looked into it a bit and stumbled over https://github.com/yxxyun/ripple-client-desktop/releases
You can create a new address and secret key on an air-gapped system with it (and it seems you don't need the wallet.txt at all).
Plus, you can do transactions too with it, what makes you independant from a 3rd party.
If you have XRP stored with such a 3rd party, you could create a new address/key pair and transfer them there.

1. Cryptsy will not allow you to cashout your XRP. I had to convert to another coin to cash out, and this was months ago. I sent an email to support in 2015 and I got this email 13 days ago:
"Currently we are experiencing problems with our withdrawal system.
If you place a withdrawal for BTC LTC DASH BTCD and a few other coins, you may experience delays.
You will receive notice once we have resolved this problem
If you would like to cancel a withdrawal, please create a "new" ticket and choose "Cancel Withdrawal"

2. Yes, you only need your secret/private key to access your XRP on the Ripple network: Your public key starts with an "r" your secret key starts with an "s". However, Cryptsy doesn't issue wallets so you don't technically own XRP, you own Cryptsy XRP IOUs: https://ripple.com/knowledge_center/password-recovery-and-your-secret-key/

U can also store your XRP on Poloniex, Bittrex and on other exchange platforms. Check the list here: http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ripple/#markets
But as MtGox and Cryptsy history have shown, no exchange platform is more sure than your own desktop wallet.
If MtGox/Cryptsy/Whatever other exchange has taught anything, it's that you do not want this sort of information in the hands of such a company.
A wallet under your personal control is the safest way to store any cryptocurrency; with every other option there is the chance that a 3rd party has control over your coins.
If it is not possible to use a standalone client to manage your XRP, it's pointless to bother about it.

AFAK there is no offline wallet for XRP. Rippletrade wallet is the safest one at this stage, coz it`s a California based trusted company. But after 1st of April they are deactivating users` wallets and trading on their platform.
