With the amazing rally btc is experimenting, it seems more reasonable that xrp fluctuates around usd instead of btc.
It's just traded more for btc than for usd because btc is more liquid, at least here.
But it makes it harder to track the price...

Yes, XRPs appear to be "pegged" to USD, BTC Price going up will devalue them relative to BTC (for now ...)

Price dropped 25% could this be because Bitcoin value went up?

The price seems quite stable now despite the fluctuation in fiat value of Bitcoin.

When XRP was @20000 there was almost no ask size, only ~5BTC between 20K and 40K.
Fascinating to watch, even if the moves are mostly random ping pong in illiquid market.

I will track the price in XRPs of one Bitcoin in this thread. If the XRP price goes up it means that XRPs are becoming cheap, while descending values indicate that XRPs are becoming more expensive. For now the price is quoted based on the most liquid gateway (currently Bitstamp). If there is a website that graphs this data automatically please let me know!

Ripple market cap: $124,000,000 (@ $49/BTC)

3/6/2013: 39,500
3/5/2013: 45,000
3/4/2013: 17,350
3/3/2013: 27,500
3/2/2013: 41,388
3/1/2013: 71,000
2/28/2013: 65,000

The Ripple market cap is calculated by dividing the total amount of XRPs in existence (100 billion), dividing by the snapshot average of bid and ask, and multiplying by the price of BTC at the time.

The methodology for determining the day's price is calculated by taking the average of the bid and ask at one moment in time. That there will likely be little to no actual volume available at that price due to the illiquidity of XRPs and the size of the order book.

Very helpful, thanks!

There's more depth in the order book, but Bitcoin's rise in price hasn't affected the XRP price. Therefore, the total value of all potential XRPs has gone up quite a bit.

Do you have something similar with usd in the vertical axis?

No, because I don't store historical information on Bitcoin prices at the time I sample the XRP exchange rate. Although it is something I could consider. But hopefully someone will put up a simple web page that tracks XRP price automatically.

Dropped in value or just dropped again bitcoin? Maybe is rising but just not as fast as bitcoin charging bull.

The price of XRP denominated in Bitcoins definitely dropped, there's no ambiguity here. Now if you want to talk about the price of XRP in US Dollars that's a different story.

Wow... $40/BTC!!!! XRP has dropped in value. Does anyone know if OpenCoin has resumed giving out XRP?

Maybe is rising but just not as fast as bitcoin charging bull.

I was watching this carefully, XRP was evaluating agiasnt BTC until about 20 HRS ago, it then dropped massively and then BTC did a jump to its high, and XRP dropped more.

To me it appears XRP dropped just before the BTC took of today.

to give you and idea

XRP B16/A22 BTC 33 (ish) 20 hours ago

then
XRP B35/A40 BTC 33 ish

then

BTC ---> 40

XRP B4X/A5X

To me it looked like  XRP went BEFORE BTC did, like a lead indicator

Mid day price popped back up to 29,000XRP/BTC and also 240 new accounts have been created since yesterday, and funded with the reserve requirement.

The price of XRP has roughly tripled

Has OpenCoin stopped giving away free XRP? Is that why?

Pump and dump.

Its pure speculation at this point.
