fees are too high at the moment, but if they become more reasonable, I can see merchants also participating in paying them, if it ends up costing the same as a credit card purchase for them.

OMG. This is a big good news to bitcoin community and I believe that more will accept bitcoin after this big step. Hope that burger king will extend their bitcoin payment system to the whoole world
well that’s true now bitcoin is going at high demand and everyone is asking for it to use and to buy goods through it so markets and burger kings are ready to sell their burgers on bitcoin price and ready to get bitcoin to enlarge their business in it so I think it’s good news for bitcoin user.

I am really curious about a technical side of this project, what about bitcoin fees? Burger King is not some luxury restaurant where meals cost hundreds of dollars.
Currently, bitcoin transaction fee is probably equal to the cheapest burger you can get at Burger Kind. How exactly are they gonna solve this issue?
Someone said that they will simply accept payments only from Xapo or Coinbase and steer in the way of off-chain transactions. Is this even doable?

So yeah, hopefully McDonald, Dominos pizza, and many others will follow after this. I thought that this kind of decisions are taken by the creators of the franchise but It looks like It's not since It's starting on Russia.
Great news for the Bitcoin holder...
I always hopeful about Bitcoin that it will be accepted all the way in the future, it's a beginning for the new era, day by day Bitcoin is becoming a popular currency around the world, so that another franchisee will accept Bitcoin as a payment tool...

It helps that russia is really at the forefront of crypto-adoption these days. Who knew burger king was so innovative? We're definitely considering working with them to be a merchant partner!
It's just not about Burger King , many companies have taken the initiative of accepting the bitcoin as a currency. It's really a step . It will prove beneficial for the bitcoin and the public itself . If the bitcoin has to grow at rapid pace in the market  , it should be widely accepted  as the currency in organisations .

It's quite a huge step and e are looking forward to Burger King extending it globally so that we can all order in our beloved cryptocurrency. We can even order for someone in a different country should they globalize their Bitcoin acceptance. Secondly I think other companies in Russia are going to take similar steps after this initiative.

How do these businesses profit from getting Bitcoin.. today it's high and tomorrow it might drop 20%

so that's 20% loss for the business?

Most of them instantly convert bitcoin to fiat so they don't care how the rates go

Burger king is the largest fast food restaurant in the world. So do not worry about the popularity it has. when burger king could accept bitcoin then why other restaurants can not. This is a good start, the more chances the bigger the bitcoin in the world. The most important is a consistency in the use of bitcoin, if true then burger king should be able to manage well and apply it in all branches that they have.

No, it's not. It's actually half the size of McD and  barely 1/3 of  SubWay.

Well, this is a good news although not the whole chain of restaurants but a single franchise will accept Bitcoin. But I don't break my mind with the facts who is actualy accepting Bitcoin or not as long as I have Bitcoin card that is accepted everywhere as any other card. For me Bitcoin debit cards make the life much easier.

Accepting bitcoin for food services does not seem realistic to me. The reason is obvious. How can you expect your transaction to get confirmed after you ordered something?

There is a very simple workaround really

They could just use a well-established web wallet like Coinbase or Xapo (or whatever other wallets are there), and thus they may demand their Bitcoin customers to use such wallets too. Obviously, transactions inside these wallets are off-chain, therefore they are instant and require no fees. If you are a regular customer of these eateries, it might make sense to keep some pocket money in one of these wallets even if you are whole-heartedly against using them ("be your own bank" and that kind of thing). Even with the introduction of LN and further improvements, this type of payment may still prevail for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of use

I haven't yet tried either Xapo or Coinbase
. So I am not that aware of the fees charged by these wallets/exchanges. How much do they charge for sending coins from one user to another? If it is something like $0.10, then it should be OK. But anything more than that will be very unattractive

And you'd better not

Unless they actually start accepting payments from these wallets only (I've read somewhere around here that this is what many merchants are already doing) and you are going to pay with bitcoins there. As I said, in-house transactions are free, i.e. you don't have to pay anything when you send your coins from your account to another user of the same web wallet. These transactions never hit the blockchain as such, and the coins sent and received may not even leave the wallet they are actually located in

It's not Burger King but a single restaurant owned in franchise.
I doubt the whole chain will adopt this method this year.

Probably they will first check out how the first one is doing and if the sales have improved after the first month when curiosity will most certain push people to visit.

But I'm amazed how many BurgerKing locations are in Russia.
Pretty interesting since they are (or at least the media) anti american that they are full of BK and McDonalds.
There are more in the Moscow region than in the entire France.

I hope not only Burger king, in the future all franchises also use Bitcoin as a transaction tool. Hopefully with the development of bitcoin, all dreams can be real  Wink

Fantastic its really good news I hope it should be implemented in my country. I hope most wont use bitcoin to spend untill ghe is having huge number of bitcoin or there is no other source of income apart from bitcoin  and also the biggest reason for spending may be giving huge discount for bitcoin transaction.

Really! This is a bitcoin in the process of expanding into the world. It is very convenient that you can pay for bitcoin. But what about fees?
