There are always underlying reasons to ban or legalize something, but I fail to understand what Putin is gaining by legalizing Bitcoin. Maybe Putin is cool all of a sudden? doubt so.

One of the most useful utility that Bitcoin has is as a 'wealth pump' of sorts.  Achieving this with more mainstream systems is fraught with difficulty...particularly for Americans.  Perhaps Russia is anticipating a scenario where the direction of flow will be favorable to them.  Just a guess.

Well a footnote is Max Keiser can talk on RT all he wants about Bitcoin and he has no issues
In fact they bring in guests to talk about cryto so the fact they are considering legalizing Bitcoin makes sense.
(It is one of the core organisations of strategic importance to Russia)
So it's on the radar and would have been muzzled long ago if Russia really was planning to ban it from usage.

well i believe that is just to follow china...
Many people here in Russia think so. Our central bank advised legal entities not deal with bitcoin, but personal use is not prohibited and regulated.

It looks like they realized it is better to embrace new technology than to ban it. The world was not build by being scared of new stuff.

I think you are right. They were scared of bitcoin replacing ruble and they will loose control of their monetary system. They planned to ban bitcoin in times of falling oil prices and the Ukraine crisis. A year has passed and now they see the possibility of regulating bitcoin like other countries and bitcoin is not as threatening as they imagined.

The Cointelegraph article is still the only source of this "news". There should be more details released from multiple sources if this is for real.

the question here is, why they are trying to do it?, they already know that cant do nothing against bitcoin, is useless, is so simply they cant stop it, so from my point of view what they are just trying is to scared ppl to use it, thats his first movement, second movement is to use it Smiley

ofc this is just a conspiracy theory from me, but it makes senses, yes? Wink

I think Russia just made bitcoin ILLEGAL.

Where'd you get that news? There are tons of people from Russia trading bitcoins and I don't see any basis of that country banning bitcoin.

If Russia is making it legal then it is a great news for us. Atleast any country should take first step in accepting bitcoin as a currency so that other countries can also think and follow Russia in the adoption of bitcoin.

Last year, Russia was planning to past a law to ban bitcoin. People could be fined for using, mining and trading bitcoin. It was all over the press.

Now Russia is allowing bitcoin to be used for p2p trnasactions? I find this hard to believe. Will treat this as rumour before more sources confirm this. Russia seldom reverse their stance so suddenly.

Maybe they finally figured out that they can profit much more with legalization, than they can with ban, but until it is confirmed i wouldn't take any of this seriously.
Just like this shift in opinion happened, by the time ban was supposed to happen, they can change their mind once again.

cheers

well this will have a good focus ,and i really believe that some country will allow the bitcoin ,someone must do the first step ... and the other will start to follow

We want more and more countries to start adopting and accepting bitcoins then only purpose of holding bitcoins will serve. And the governments of other countries should start following the Russia and its great news for bitcoin community that Russia has taken a first step.

Russia is supposed to begin banning Bitcoin sometime in August. So far, Bitcoin has not been banned, so how do they legalize something that isn't illegal?

I was getting used to read of a new topic each week saying that Russia was about to ban BTC. Obviously, this week is different, but I have yet to understand why. Especially since the ruble remains at such a low value. Increasing BTC usage would not help.

I can't see Russia allowing bitcoin, not yet whilst it's still in its infancy. Russia is kind of corrupt & they like to have near full control over the monetary systems in their country. No way will they allow bitcoin in my opinion as they can't control it & the people using it. People have too much freedom using bitcoin which equals a big red flag for Putin & those who control the finance systems in Russia.

Why, I do believe that there have been far more reports in the news about individuals being attacked by US government henchmen due to BTC trading, than in Russia. Charlie Shrem, the Florida guys, Burt W. and so on.  Undecided

Funny because in the US, bitcoin is supposed to be legal and in Russia not. BTC is not outlawed in the West, that would be too direct, everyone would recognize the fascism behind a BTC ban - so they use the money laundering meme as an excuse.  Sad
