No 480 needs just above 150W / card, 470 is 120W i guess, I m not sure pls check. But a 1200W Gold/Platinum should be good for 470 if you mining Zcash. Eth is more power hungry.

The RAM doesnt matter, 4 GB is enough. I run a system at even 2, and it does fine.

HDD, again you just need to run the OS, if you running Windows just get a 16 GB Flash, the cheapest option. A linux can even run on even 8GB.

When mining at full speed at stock settings, an RX 480 can consume upto 200W, and an RX 470 can consume 160W. If you are going to go the Windows route, and underclock/undervolt your cards, then target consumption of 120W per card with tweaks. If you are going to go with linux, unless you get a custom ROM made by someone else, your cards will consume 150W so plan accordingly. It is recommended to have a 20% power capacity buffer on the power supply, so for a system consuming 1000W, get a 1200W PSU.

Also, RAM does matter, go for 4GB as that is a good price performance balance, the smaller your system ram is the more the paging file is used, and it results in frequent swaps and stale shares sometimes.

As for the HDD, if you are using a plug and play OS like EthOS or SimpleMiningOS, then get a 16gb SSD. If you are using Windows, get a 64GB SSD minimum as you need to allocate 16GB to paging file which you can not do on a 32GB SSD.

Is it worth the exchange?

Next month i will take 2x 1070 3GB.

I do not have much experience with these brands, but I think MSI is better, though the armor series seems to have a cheaper build. But check what card has better resale in your region, also if the XFX is not OC, then you better go for the OC version, but again look around a lot of reviews of 470 here and on youtube.

I love the 1060, 3GB, even today i checked my return its earning more thn the 75USD more expensive 8GB 480s I got earlier.

I must say that Radeon cards are generally better suited for mining purposes. They have a problem of emitting a lot of heat and tend to work in very hot temperatures. I still insist these are better but if you put them in a board like MSI or BIOSTAR with 6 GPU slots and make sure to have 3-5 coolers as long as your PC case can take, Corsair and Cooler Master do a pretty good job.

I started mining with AMD cards, I had a 290x, and then got some rx480s. but in the last 3-4 months, nvidea seems to be catching up. And though rx series is killing it for Ethereum, nvidea is at-par or even better for rest of the algos.

I just got a MSI 1070 last night and I am quite happy with it. Nvidea can mine a lot of algorithms ( ones tht are profitable ), and that makes me feel much more comfortable and future proof. As Ethereum is soon going to be POS, its best you do not place ur best bet on it.

So 1070 being the most powerfull ( expensive too ) and giving a return of 1.65USD ( average ) a day, i feel its the best choice as it saves on PCI Slot, Heat, Electricity and gives u the best ROI in long run.

Yup, leaking too, but that's not oil, that's thermal grease from the pads, non conductive and not harmful for the card or any other component.

here is my 2c

1. AMD vs Nvidia
Historically AMD miner development has been faster and out earlier. Just look at Etherum, Zcash and Pascal. I never check but i think it was the same for Monero. Even today you struggle to fund the quality miners for Nvidia you can get for AMD.

2. With ROI over 12months, it is very risky to invest a lot. So the lower the Investment the better even if it means getting less Return. The return can go up or down which is where the risk is.

Depending on your country and pricing it does look like R470 4Gb is king for mining now.

But that said one can run +8 Nvidia cards on a MB with an PCI-E switch but can't do more than 7 with AMD RX cards. So lower systems overhead cost and in my opinion Nvidia is more popular with gamers so better resell value.

I also recommend the Gigabyte g1 1070. Although I have only 1 and the rest of my rigs are based on old AMD R9 2/390s (which now consume WAY too much power).

The one I have is capable of VERY high memory overclocks (+700 at least) which gives it great hashrate vs. power consumption for the many algorithms which benefit from fast memory. It is really good at ETH (30mh/s @ 100W), ZEC (440 sol/s @ 110W) and cryptonight (500h/s @ 90W but maybe capable of much more if you can find the right ccminer - I can't)). These are the ones I have tested thoroughly but I know it also can kill at some other algorithms, like Lyra2rev2, X11gost, and others.

Obviously I can't compare to other more recent cards, but I believe that 1070s in general with maintain very good resale value. Which may offset the problem that they are expensive cards compared to the AMD ones you asked about.

If I was starting out and had a decent amount of money I think I would build half of my rigs with the Gigabyte G1 gaming 1070, and the other half with whatever is the best bang for buck AMD cards right now.
