nvidia cards have a higher hashrate on way more algirithms.
e.g. they perform best with equihash.
So if you can find cheap gtx1070 I would take them!

The reason why it hashes the same but costs more is because the Nvidia is more optimized for other algos like ZEC.

Another reason is because it's always in demand with gamers because they usually prefer Nvidia over AMD. Something like 80% prefer Nvidia over AMD.

Same reason why people prefer Intel over AMD for CPUs and same reason people prefer an IPhone rather than a Android phone.

What about Lyra2z? I see more and more coins are coming out with this algo and while profits are down ECO algos become more important, and AMD has clear advantage on Lyra2z(can any1 explain me why?).

I would use GTX 1070. I got one of these working. NVIDIA has more algorithms for mining on video cards. So GTX is my choice. I apologize for my English.

I have 2 ETH rigs, one with 6x1070s, one with 6xRx570s.  All my 1070s are Nvidia branded FE and set to power target = 65% with NvidiaInspector. All hash at 32.5-33 Mh/s and consume 99-100 watts.  My Rx570s are a mix of Asus and MSI cards, all are bios modded.  The Asus cards consume 92-94 watts, MSI cards range from 95-105 watts and all 6 hash at 29.0 Mh/s.  So for me Nvidia cards are more efficient hash/watt, but cost a lot more (now) than AMD cards.  Nvidia cards are very easy to tune, AMD cards CAN be easy (find a good bios online and flash it) or a pain (roll your own bios mod and spend hours tweaking).  For my ASUS cards, I found a great BIOS on Anorak, flashed it and I was off and running.  My MSI cards didn't like any of the straps I tried, so spent a lot of time trying to find an optimal setting.  Also have 3 of the exact same MSI cards with the exact same bios, same memory, etc, and they use 95w, 99w, 105w.

Buy rx570 4gb for $220 on sale.  $250 at most.  Thank me later.

But prob just don't buy gpus.

Now, not those other cards are not found at an adequate price, it's sad that I thought for so long that I would enter the mining (((

It takes about 20 minutes to install, bios mod, overclock and tweak settings on an AMD card to get optimized hash rates for both ETH and Cryptonight. Add another 5-10 minutes for Cryptonight Heavy.

I'm going to mine mainly ETH but i'm also developer testing & coding software for mining and i use my farm in these tests.
I noticed a huge difference in price between rx580 and 1070 and this is why i started this thread.
319$ and 499$ is big difference for such close performance.
Any concrete advantage of 1070 over rx580 ?
Thanks

Have you ever spent 3-4 hours trying to get a BIOS mod RX card to work?  I have!  Don't get me wrong... I'm an AMD guy, but I dread the thought of adding another card to one of my rigs.. LOL!

Sometimes I think I'll change to NVidia cards to get rid of all the headaches, but then realize, like you stated, I can get more hashrate for a lower price by sticking with AMD cards.

I choose RX580 if it will mine in ETH apart from the price difference also the AMD card is tweak-friendly although AMD has hungry power consumption.

Maybe the best solution is to make a rig with both kind of cards. You will make the best decision on your own experience. I would rather choose 1070 no matter of price, maybe you will change your mind and decide to try some other coins.

they have close performance for mining eth only, but nvidia card have much better performance in other algos, like equihash, skein, lyra2z and many more.. and if are speaking about your choice for mining eth better choose rx570.. it is even cheaper then rx580 with close performance

Hi folks,
I'd like to ask experienced miners what do you think is better deal nowaday to buy RX580 at 319$ or 1070 at 499$ ? From my experience they have the same hash-rate performance on mining ETH but the price difference is 40% more for 1070. I understand nvidia consume less energy but energy difference is not significant if we comparing price ratio. Considering investing 20.000$ would you go for 580 or 1070 ?
Any though ?

Both have their advantages/disadvantages. If you are somewhat experienced go the AMD route, if you are more along the lines of a novice go with Nvidia.

Additionally, it depends heavily on what currency you intend on mining specifically. They do offer similar hash rates but not quite the same and in all cases but Cryptonight, the 1070 will offer better performance.

If your looking best bang for buck for mining eth you should not even look at gpus. Go look at bitmain asic eth E3

Let me rephrase - ETH utilizes memory bandwidth and the GPU's compute performance is nearly irrelevant for this coin. On any other algorithm that utilizes the core, RX 580 performs about as good as GTX 1060 6GB while drawing more power, so GTX 1070 will be roughly 50% more powerful than 1060/6 and RX 580.
It's like saying that two different vehicles are the same because both can reach the speed limit.

The main advantage of a 1070 over a RX 580 is lower power consumption for about the same mining performance in many algorithms. The hashing advantage of the 1070 is mostly with smaller, less popular algorithms. Mainly because AMD miners for those algorithms haven't been optimized. A good example is Neoscrypt, where once Claymore released his optimized AMD miner a RX 580 gets 1000 KH/s. Same as a 1070.

1070 easier to setup and maintain.  No bios flashes and no driver patches like the 580.

In my opinion it doesn't worth to pay almost double price because rx580 need bios flash comparing to 1070. I'm looking at big advantages of 1070 over rx580 to justify the hefty price

not tied with eth, 1070 is far better on many other algo, amd is good only on eth or monero-like coin
