Man and I this time I thought they were wasting taxpayer dollars.  This is such a good use of our taxes.

beetcoin has been flagged as a sarcasm-user by the forum's automated screening system

User Beetcoin has received a warning, and his post has been uploaded for safekeeping into the NSA database. Further sarcasm will result in a complete ban on internet communication.

But seriously, this story is hilarious. There is no limit to how far governments will go to maintain power and control even in the age of limitless internet communications.

I don't think the secret service wants to "ban" sarcasm but rather use it to help detect if something is a serious threat or not.

If someone were to make a threat of some kind that is not serious then the Secret Service could use limited resources to investigate and prevent a threat that did not really ever exist while one that was serious could not be looked into due to their limited resources.

Make an perfect software for this is as hard as make a software that mimic perfectly the human intelligence(mimic this is way harder than mimic a 13 you for 5 min during a conversation).

But I have some ideas that might help to make a good enough software for this:

-If one uses quotation marks or write ~this way~ , or put lols and other funny stuffs in their speaking(quite obvious)
-If one says with high conviction something contrary to their previous declarations, specially if these previous declarations are near the ironic phrase.
-If one say exaggerated, absurd and hyperbolic things.
-Incisive affirmative statements, with any signals of doubt and politeness related to contrary opinions, or with no rhetoric tricks,  are alone a hint of irony, but with high chance to false positives. For example:

i can help the secret service and other underground institutions: i love them, and i think their existence is completely necessary. they do great work.

yeah, because -as we all know - sarcasm is the biggest threat to the national security

Compare that with the non ironical comments on this or any other thread

All social media sites need to do is add this function:

I be very interested on how they come up with an algorithm to detect sarcasm but does sound like a waste of money.

that the SS wants it might imply that it's possible? scary thought since I have no idea how far linguistics AI research has progressed in the past while

So, it appears that it's not enough to just search through everyone's private facebook, skype, and other social media conversations for terrorism catch words like let's blow them sky high, or it's time to drown the eagle, or so r we gonna kill Obama or not? Make up ur minds lol. It turns out that Team America still have to actually read the conversations, which, understandably, poses difficulties for them.

May be the secret service monitor keywords on the internet, and they get so many flags per day on the keyword "kill". Manual inspection shows most of them are sarcastic comments, so they want a software to detect sarcasm to filter out the noise. Then more time and resources can be used on real potential threats.

Now that is one of the hardest coding jobs I could think of
Akin to having a smart AI that can detect lexicon patterns and then filter them into common remarks and sayings then take the variants of those sayings to create an algorithm that detects the probability of any set of parameters being met to detect sarcasm
Within the context of a long conversation increasing the error rate.

I guess it could be done but efficiently from A to B might take merging a few technologies
We do have Intel's Watson system so Sarcasm is just a step away.

Indeed, this is an expensive project in terms of development time (and cost). The algorithm would be experimental, so its going to have quite a few errors.
