Just a quick update here, Someone posted this one: Don't Believe ShapeShift's Trap. There is No Cheap Hardware Wallet!.

So the catch, you can buy the hardware wallet for $10 but the shipping fee is $38.  Grin

An additional promotional offer for people to get into KYC with their site. This is telling a lot about how Shapeshift is suffering from a terrible backlash of customers ever since they started requiring them to undergo KYC. And the worse thing is that they won't even use their own money for this promotional offer. They would get it from the customers themselves, by a subtle way of tricky padding on the shipping fee. It is unfortunate how this dependable site has become into.

Oh well, who would have taught that there's no hidden trick here? Do you think that they are going to shoulder the shipping fee? Hell no.

And we don't know if there's someone who fall for their marketing trap, there are so many ways to to secure your coins here and hardware wallet such as trezor or ledger is the most notable one.

It is a very funny promotion.

KeepKey ( price is $79.00 )

source: https://keepkey.myshopify.com/products/keepkey-the-simple-bitcoin-hardware-wallet

Trezor ( price is $65 )

source: https://trezor.io

People will need to have funds to trade

People will have to go through KYC which means handing over passport, income statements and proof of residence (In my country passport price is $60)

just to earn $10? I don't know if their marketing department believes this to be a good thing, but in my opinion I don't see it as a good thing.

  • The goal of the promotion wasn't to get someone to buy a whole new hardware wallet, it was for those who already have one
  • If you do want a KeepKey, you can use code "genesisfox" on Shopify to get 50% off (add coupon in the checkout process). https://keepkey.myshopify.com/
  • You don't need passport, income statements, or proof of residence.  For US you need only name, phone number, last four of social, and address. For non-US you need that plus a scan of your driver license or passport.

Enjoy! Try it at beta.shapeshift.com
Lets say we do able to get that 50% off which is $39.5 for Keepkey, its still not worth to consider on and i do even doubt that kepkey users would
plan out to verify themselves just for that $10 giveaway.

ShapeShift doesn't service US customers anymore, so I won't be taking advantage of the promotion.  I bought a Keepkey not too long ago and didn't realize the wallet was linked to ShapeShift--that seems ridiculous to me that a hardware wallet should be dependent on an exchange.

CEO here...  We definitely do service US customers.  Your KeepKey can be used in multiple ways:  we recommend you try it with the new beta.shapeshift.com platform, but you can also use it with the original KeepKey chrome client.  Would love to know what you think!

The platform UI...

People ads willing to send their documents to shady companies for 10 bucks, which is the price of a hamburger...
Most people are here to make quick money only... Trying to get any possible money at any cost.
Well, that's how people want here in crypto especially for newcomers. But with some of the abusers who have the skills to photoshop personal documents, this is their favorite.
I don't know if photoshop documents will be passed to them. I remember before on bloackchain.com that have airdrop on XLM and that was very trending everywhere in telegram airdrop groups and probably this promotion of ShapeShift will become as blockchain.com did. As I remember that was worth $25 in XLM coin that you received after completed the task and passed the KYC.

But for me, I won't exchange my personal data in just $10 amount, that was a big joke. And correct this kind of marketing promotions was the favorite those abusers and greed people. But it is harder to abuse because it needs keepkey and trezor wallet.

the stellar giveaway? how do you know it was a great success?

In the end we successfully airdropped Stellar (XLM) to millions of users across 140 countries and have since seen users save, swap and send XLM multiple times over.

That's a pretty damn great success.

true, that sounds pretty good on paper. but i'm sure the ultimate goal was to convert airdrop recipients into exchange customers, hence the KYC process. i wonder what their conversion rate is since people coming for freebies usually don't intend to become paying customers. they spent a boatload of cash verifying millions of people; that much i know.

true but they also not have built a gigantic database of a large number of bitcoin users. and this is a very valuable asset for the company. who knows what they are doing behind the scene and privately. possibly working with governments or different companies like the chain analysis ones. so it could be a good revenue for them to just let them "look up" things in their database.

Such promotions already become trend, and not only in crypto world. Lot of neobanks, such as Monese are also paying for registrations. Ad said above, it's smart marketing and great way to collect KYC data. Ok, for us such offers to sell our data for $10 looks like a joke. But a lot of people are ready to do it with easy hand. And I'm not talking about poor people from 3rd world countries. Lot of people in Europe, USA are doing that. They just don't think about possible risks and their privacy.

The people who hand over their personal information to ShapeShift then have a fully verified account, which means that they can use that platform without any hassle moving onwards. This is exactly what ShapeShift is after. Admittedly, ShapeShift is quite a useful service so people will love using it to convert crypto back and forth.
It greatly helps the people who are dump enough to find an exchange to convert their coins other than this there is no reason to use their service unless we need something in very emergency because the conversion in shapeshift doesn't take longer like in exchange.

true and don't forget to mention the high fees compared to normal exchanges... when shapeshift offered anonym exchange fees were "ok" for exchange fastly a small amount.

this promo only exist to catch new users and maybe they wanna do something with your personal datas after kyc... i don't know. but giving them you personal details for 10$ isnt a smart move. just my opinion

I don't know why everyone thinks this offer is to Verify Shapeshift account (KYC)?. Perhaps an indirect promotion of KeepKey or Trezor Hardware wallets?
You need to buy a Hardware wallet that costs more than $ 10 and send your data to get $ 10. This can be considered a 10% devaluation.
I think the payoff of this type of promotion is much higher than the ads.

Good marketing to attract a new user to join with them. If people are not careful, they will try to join in the ShapeShift. But if they read everything, they will find that if they want to receive $10 in BTC to their account, they need to complete their first trade which we need to do KYC. I wouldn't do that because I don't want to give my detail information to them, and I don't want to risk my document.

It is almost the same as what the Stellar do before. People need to verify to claim their reward, and I think that is not worth because once again, we risk our personal information by giving to them.

But if people still want to try, I suggest them to be careful, and maybe you can use the other people's document if you don't want to send your own document Grin

That's a pretty damn great success. ShapeShift is less known than Blockchain, but will do well with this promotion nonetheless. KYC or not, people don't seem to care.  Lips sealed

$10 for my personal info? Sorry I (some) value their privacy here so I won't bite on this kind of promotions specially from Shapeshift.

However, I think that some gullible newbie who are more willing to trade their privacy for $10 here.  Grin

Used their services a lot 2017/2018 until the KYC thingy, probably a marketing ploy to gain traction again but it's too late.

0.00095 BTC to verify my KYC with shapeshift? i laughed before i realized there's probably people that actually do this. Shocked

If you're paying $10 for a hamburger, you're going to the wrong restaurant.  Lol.  I get your point, though.  I wouldn't provide my dox to a crypto company for a $10 promotion.

a decent hamburger runs $15 in my neck of the woods. that's california for you. Wink

so shapeshift is offering me 2/3 of a hamburger for my documents......lol.

If we look at Blockchain's promotion, it has turned out to be a great success for them, and so will it be a great success for ShapeShift.

Possibly. Most people (me included) who used shapeshift never really had a problem with them until they forced people to verify themselves. I'm sure they lost at least half of their users after KYC became mandatory.

I find $10 a bit on the lower side still. KYC verification mostly takes two business days on average, so it's not like they're offering you an instant bit of free money. The offer at the same time is one of the lowest I have seen so far in crypto.

I have nothing against shapeshift but they lost their advantage. People who are verified on spot exchanges can already convert one coin into the other. Their advantage was how fast they were without KYC, but that's over.

Eh, I think Coinbase did much the same thing back when I created an account with them back in 2015.  IIRC they were giving away something like $5 in bitcoin for registering.

It's smart marketing.
I agree.  I've seen people do things in the crypto world for less than $10 that I wouldn't have believed, and I'm sure ShapeShift is well aware of this.  But I'm not a fan of the Keepkey, and ShapeShift doesn't service US customers anymore, so I won't be taking advantage of the promotion.  I bought a Keepkey not too long ago and didn't realize the wallet was linked to ShapeShift--that seems ridiculous to me that a hardware wallet should be dependent on an exchange.
