Although bitcoin is expensive but profit margin in BTC investment is also high compared to altcoins. I would definitely say that you shouldn't hold too many coins. Buy different kinds of coins, but keep it in a smaller range (like 1-5). If you hold too many different coins it may cause trouble when you're cashing out (if you're storing them on offline wallets).
