Topic: should lack of knowledge about an existing thread be tolerated in the forum? (Read 260 times)

It is a very nice question where the high ranked members should look into because not all posts are shown for new comers to see. Sometimes I see repeating of post as lack of knowledge for the new comers and most times this repeated post comes from questions that newbies ask if they are to tolerate repeated post it should be the newbies and not high ranked members but nobody is a memory card there are  thousands of hiding post if someone had repeated a post they should inform the person of it first before any action.

Actually I know that anyone who is new to any platform for the first time is considered as a novice or newbie but it is expected that anyone who is using a platform should be able to read/write and understand but it should be noted that every platforms have either their terms of service otherwise terms and conditions or rules and regulations that guides the activities of that platform and in the forum here we have the forum rules and the forum comprises of individuals with great intellectual capacities but it's still very odd to me how some people while making posts they will be using this statement "I don't know if anyone have talked about this or have created this topic before"

This is just a normal statement that people use to start creating threads on the forum. And I think they have their own reason because many people using this know that there is no topic that they will bring and will be new to the forum members. Many topics that we are discussing on the forum have been here before, but since we are newcomers, that is why they put that in their sentences because they know the topic is already here, so I think it is not bad. However, it is not only for newbies; sometimes we that have been here also use it when we want to reply to threads.

Higher rank doesn't mean they know everything about Bitcoin certainly they didn't read everything that has been ever written on this forum. Because it's more than 60 Million posts that need to be read if that's what you are trying to read. And also there are certain threads can exist in more than one section of this forum which is another reason why they start with such statements.

This topic has been discussed before  Grin

For example: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/using-the-search-button-before-asking-questions-5462762

But all kidding aside, it's a grey area... Sometimes i start a topic that was *allmost* identical to an existing one (a prime example would be your topic and the link i posted... they are similar but not identical), or where the existing topic was last used several years ago (and necroposting is still discouraged)... Sometimes i use the search function but use "wrong" search parameters...

This happened to me about two weeks ago. I asked a question about the error message that pops up after a user tries to access a topic that has been deleted. I want to know if there are sections on the forum that were restricted to users or if it was something the admins would do in the future. I didn't know something similar had been discussed some years ago but it wasn't  identical. And even if I had used the search bar, I would not have found it.

-snip-

Yes, we are all human. Last week I translated a topic that had been already translated before. The most serious thing about the case is that I had replied to that translation and merited it not so long ago. Human attention and memory are limited, regardless of your rank.

On the other hand, although I also find reading topics that were discussed before a bit discouraging, if it was a long time ago I also think it can be positive because it promotes the activity in the forum. We should We should strive to continue to maintain high standards here, but I don't know to what extent perfection is incompatible with attracting new members interested in learning; so, although some topics are repeated from time to time, that also helps maintain a balance between excellence and dynamism in bitcointalk.

I believe this is also one of the forum rules so even if it involves a newbie, I don't think it should be tolerated since every one is supposed to have gone through forum rules before creating threads in the forum.

It is not against the forum rules. If it were, many topics would have been deleted or locked. If you stay in the forum long enough, you will notice the never ending cycle of newbies repeating the same questions about merit and rank. It’s a lazy attitude and is tiring to seebut it is not against the forum rules. The rule you quoted is talking about duplicate posting in multiple boards, that means if I start a topic on Beginners & Help, I cannot post the same topic in Bitcoin Discussion.

However, OP. You ignored Mocacinno's answer because a similar topic already exists. May I know why? No need to answer... Because you understand that you are doing the same as those whom you are now blaming.

I didn't ignore his answer and that was the reason I said this

"I don't know if anyone have talked about this or have created this topic before"

As you can see the area I bolded it isn't that am much worried about people not using the search box but using the statement of not being aware if such topics have been created before that's the area am majorly emphasizing on because if we create a similar topic their some other users that have come across such topics before and they can reference it to the OP and it gets locked or if it a topic that can be continued it will still be left open for others to make their replies

I don't think it is a crime to create a thread when there is another one similar, but when your attention is called to that thread before yours, the right thing to do is to lock yours and sometimes the moderators do delete the duplicate so as to make the forum organised. Some person much suggest using the search button to check if such threads already exist but the truth is that it is not always easy searching the entire forum everytime we want to make a post because most times the search does not give the data needed. Perhaps using the search button can be created as a thread so ghat users will know exactly how to get accurate information needed.

It is more common with newbies, not with high rank members.

I've seen some high ranked members starting a thread with that same statement. And sincerely I don't see anything wrong in it. I wonder why op decided to make a whole thread out of this. Not everyone will want to check back on old forgotten threads using the search button. Aside that, some threads have better discussions compared to some. I won't want to interact in a topic where the ops copies a news from somewhere and drops without any points of discussion. But would want to discuss on that which the op created from his own idea of what he heard.

I wouldn't get too upset about things like that, because honestly nobody really cares.

True, i think that the forum used to be much more interesting than it is now. Wonder what is happening, Huh I now find the forum a bit boring. Just up on my bot every now and then is a spammer claiming to exploit stake. Guess there isn't anything that can be done.

Okay, let's move on. You create a topic about the reason for buying Bitcoin.

What is the essence of buying and hodling Bitcoin like is it to accumulate it till it attains ATH then we sell it off and wait for a dip and start buying and holdling again or just accumulate it and start using it as a digital means of exchange or are we going to continue till the 21 million Bitcoins have be mined, already 19 millions have been mined remaining 2 million because overtime, i have come across several topics about buy and hodl bitcoin so i actually wish to know the sole objective of acquiring bitcoins.

In the forum about Bitcoin, there is talk here about Bitcoin; isn't there talk about investing? But, in your fourth post, you write about the usefulness of using DCA and then ask questions about the reason for the purchase. And you will claim that you created this topic using careful searching Grin?

I’ll say this with a quote: “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the plank in your own eye?” (Gospel of Luke 6:41)

And here it is correctly said:

It's more annoying to see alt accounts that only have a purpose to milk the forum which is you!

@Btcdeybodi, to some extent you are right, there are a lot of forum members even with higher ranks who are at the beginner level and this can be clearly read from their posts. Unfortunately, this is a legacy of the old system when ranking did not depend on merits, but only on posts and activity - which means that you could become Legendary just by writing nonsense in the Off-topic board.

I wouldn't get too upset about things like that, because honestly nobody really cares.

There was a time I wanted to create a topic, so I searched to see if that topic has been discussed before and I found a topic like the one I wanted to create. I didn't look at the date it was created, I just read through and wanted to comment when the usual "Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic", only for me to check and see that nobody has posted in the topic for over 2 years. So will I be wrong in creating a new topic of similar topic to the previous one in this case when the forum clearly advise that I should create a new topic?

It's not a responsibility for old members to know every topic that has ever been discussed or being discussed on the forum and sometimes the search icon doesn't bring up the topic because they may have different phrases or words even though they're talking about similar things. The forum stats shows that there are an average of 197 topics started each day, so there's no way you can keep track of all of them, you can only keep track of topics in boards you're interested in.
I agree that people should use the search icon before creating a topic though.

I'm sure we both have same thoughts on a case like this. Some certain law outbreaks that newbies are to do and then older users would correct them is what the older members are already doing and when the newbie does that, it becomes a basket of throwing stones of criticisms.
If as an experienced member, your insight tells you that such thread you're to creat may have existed before in the forum, all you needed to do was to use the search box to justify your mindset.

Actually no, since not everyone know every topic posted since we have different interest in this forum and maybe some other people just caught up with some information then post a thread without knowing that there's existing topic has been raised.

Maybe you will help those people to notify that there's active discussion happening and for sure if they notice that those people will lock their thread. So I guess this topic should not taken deeply since its not really a critical issue to tackle.

I personally agree with your sentiment bro,  most of this similar thread are mostly not the same, they might look alike because it all boils down to the same ends results, so the best thing to do just as you rightfully said is to tell them to lock the thread, and let that issue be discussed in the main thread, but having a serious issue with when  something like that occurs, is the least of my problem.

And lastly, the op of this thread should understand that not everyone are the same, people behave and think  differently, because we all have eyes that we use in looking, but we sees differently, so getting upset over something that can be easily corrected when pointing it out should be a no no, because I believe that you have a more bigger problem aside that, unless you are sad or grumpy on how life have been treating you, so you just decide to transfer that aggression on someone else, if not, I see no need getting upset over it.

I didn't know something similar had been discussed some years ago but it wasn't  identical. And even if I had used the search bar, I would not have found it.

This sounds very strange to me, does it mean that if a thread was created a long time ago it will be difficult to appear in the search area? and what could be the cause

Don't flush an ant nest if one ant bites you. That's not good.

Not everyone here can use the search box well because there are topics with the same value but we often find different title choices here.
Like those of you who advised to tell people to use the search box to avoid the same topic, it looks like you are not a beginner but like a high ranking member. Who cares?

Newbies like know well about forum but want to create topics to ask questions of what they already knew. It is not against rules because Beginners & Help board is for newbie questions, ask everything they don't know and it's hard to say they are not newbies.

I believe this is also one of the forum rules so even if it involves a newbie, I don't think it should be tolerated since every one is supposed to have gone through forum rules before creating threads in the forum.

Forum rules
12. No duplicate posting in multiple boards (except for re-posting topics in the local language boards if they're translated and re-posting marketplace topics in the altcoin boards if altcoins are accepted).

What's wrong with you? I don't understand why you're expecting high ranked users must understand everything, when every users in this forum are different, they have different interest, they post in whatever the thread they like and they can avoid to post any thread they don't to.

It's more annoying to see alt accounts that only have a purpose to milk the forum which is you!

Why are you sounding so aggressive as though I made this thread for you, I am not focusing on high ranked members anyway. This is just a simple thread to address the numerous repetition of threads in the forum and nothing more than that
