Do you think Bitcoin needs some Rebranding?

Rebranding is the creation of a new look and feel for an established product or company. The usual goal of rebranding is to influence a customer's perception about a product or service or the company overall by revitalizing the brand and making it seem more modern and relevant to the customer's needs.

First off, the name is a bit confusing? - Most people see the name and associate it with some physical coin. The media is also not helping with this

perception, because with every article about Bitcoin, pictures are shown of physical Casascius bitcoins.

The other aspect of Bitcoin that can be rebranded is it's bad reputation that has been built up and shilled up ..over years.

Every company gets to a point where they need to re-think their original goals and future plans... Why not Bitcoin? We have come a long way

since 2009 and making small changes will help us to take this into a new future, without the baggage of the past.  Wink

What would the pro's and cons of this be, and also the impact?

Let's discuss.  Grin

Maybe we need, because when the most people knows bitcoin, they will shout it is scam, and after that they will shout hyip or ponzi. We need to offer more information to clarify this. Governments hate decentralization and deflation, especially Chinese government.

i voted for a no to this poll.. bitcoin should not be rebranded since the name bitcoin is whathae been use by the community. if we will rebrand this, then we will somewhat go back to zero. like introducing it over again. it will take time. it is much better to allot time in developing the bitcoin than to waste our time in rebranding it.

Bitcoin isn't a cow even though we're milking it for years for our own benefit but if we going to do that then lets rebrand dollar as well.
Changing the name doesn't change it's nature.

I think "no", Bitcoin is a huge network and is very well known. And I believe the current operators afford to continue developing it. A new brand could cause many consequences, and this should not happen. we do not need to convert Bitcoin. And if you really need, segwit is the best choice at the moment. That is my opinion

No need to rebranded it because its not true that bitcoin has built up a bad reputation, its only in the mind of the individuals of how they're gonna interpret it. Moreover bitcoin has been grown and popular in a good name because many of the whale investors are came into bitcoin to adapt the system and the promising features of bitcoin.

seems the sig spammers are just copy and pasting.

anyway.. subtle things can change without needing to change "bitcoin"

What do you think should be done in regards to setting a new image for Bitcoin. How should it be done is also as important as the what and the why. Its an open source project with a community thats so varied. Its going to be hard doing any rebranding or whatever the community thinks can help with mainstream adoption.

Nah, we're doing just fine with bitcoin as it is.  The media wouldn't be having any of it anyway, and it isn't like most people are aware of what bitcoin is anyway.   I see from the poll that most people here agree...so this is kind of dead in the water.
yes that is right, i think bitcoin traveled a long journey from 2009 up to now, now its time to get the fruit. i think bitcoin is the best name for it and we do not need any change in its name or some thing else.

Rebranding something that has not even made a mark could be a bad move. It would be like starting over and reintroducing it in a new way. And even if rebranding is to be considered, there will be nobody in particular who will lead such an effort to do so.
this is so true.. rebranding bitcoin is such a bad move, we havent even get the kind to huge number of bitcoin adoptation and rebranding will takes place? this will just result to a more complex and more confusing situation especially for the newbies in this kind of community. besides bitcoin is bitcoin. bitcoin is more well known as bitcoin. the mother of all cryptocurrency, if it will be rebranded then it will just be like any other altcoin.

I see that for many posters here re-branding=upgrading, but I don't think it is even remotely the same so I won't follow that path.
Re-branding is making something appear slightly different by advertising and marketing it in a new way. Usually product is totally the same, with only minor changes.
In my opinion bitcoin is not a product. It is invention which belongs in 'public domain' just like internet. Have you seen any commercials adverting 'the internet'?

I think thats a definite no, dont touch it, bitcoin will organically grow in my opinion.  the 1 thing that i do think needs addressing is the use of bits so that people can handle the numbers.  its only a matter of time before we are forced to use them so why not do it now before the mass public show up.

I do not think there needs to be changed from the image of bitcoin, bitcoin might change the image, it will change the bitcoin itself. I think, bitcoin users have been comfortable with the image, which has been bitcoin use.

Already there are quite a few number of re branded coins ,some call them as alt coins Cheesy and for me all the coins are following the steps of bitcoin to become the next big thing. So i do not find it interesting .everyone has a say when it comes to digital currency/

I agree in one of the reply. It might make it as an altcoin.
We are still few in numbers and others might get confused for now.
Only those who are really popular can adapt with changing their names or logos.
If there will be a chnage it is not yet now or the next year. We need more people supporting it.
One question. Who will rebrand it? The bitcointalk community? The largest amount of bitcoin holder? No one can.

Yeah it does make sense, rebranding Bitcoin might make it as an altcoin.  I think Bitcoin is fine and no need for rebranding though I agree that we need to rightfully identify and modify terminologies of bitcoin as what  franky1 said.

things i think that will NATURALLY change
is when people measure their holdings in 'bits' (100sats)

things that should change to avoid confusion
if we call a 'wallet' a 'keychain'/'keyring' (you know the thing in your pocket that holds your [door] keys together)

i think once 'bits' become common place people can understand the difference between
Bitcoin (consensus protocol network)
bitcoin (the currency)

i know people try to use 'btc' for the currency and bitcoin for the network. but some terminology should change either naturally through time due to laymen using it. or by us actively thinking about the words we use and the imagery it conjures up when talking commonly to people. to help make describing it less of a headache

Bitcoin does have some form of bad publicity but rebranding is just too much, particularly with it gaining market and recognition, rebranding would slow down the growth of bitcoins as well as new people getting to know it IMO.

Theres no need to rebrand since bitcoin does already establish itself for 8 years already an I could say the progress is really good and people gradually recognizes it even though there are people or government doesn't like it.

Why would someone want to "re-brand" it? Bitcoin has already the best brand available. If you are talking about its bad image on the masses, then again no need for that. Bitcoin has a bad image to some people because it made many things easier and possible. You can re-brand it as many times as you like, it won't change a thing about how people use bitcoin.

The thing is, bitcoin is a strong brand, the network effect is there, so there is nothing to change, let's work together to make bitcoin better that's all, you can't keep rebranding thing's every X years to start from scratch, everything has its dark sides.

Re-branding bitcoin will result in an Alt coin. Bitcoin will remain bitcoin.

By the way, who are the we in Should we ReBrand Bitcoin?
Once again : I'm definitely agree with this one (too), "who are we?" Only the creator Mr. Satoshi could say for ReBrand but I don't think it is really necessary for now instead of discuss and solve main problem of bitcoin transaction. The name "bitcoin" is a special gift from the founder, perception of new users about physical bitcoin and logo are not wrong and consider as a great thing.
Bad reputation of bitcoin is not so worrying because others currencies were used for illegal activities too. However, it's depends on people who use it.
