Will post pics when I set back up for dorm mining (free electricity) - had to disassemble for winter break due to room inspections... sucks cuz would've been a great time to hash (err... except for the last few days). It looks sick in the dark! Cheesy

So would a 550W PSU x2 be enough to power a R4, 1x on one standard NA circuit (~1800W) for hash board #1, and main board + hash board #2 for the other PSU? I have to "split" circuits" due to that I'm running S9's (13.5Th/s B-18 or 19 I forget) on the other two circuits...

Moreover, is this SAFE?! I know there's an unsafe way to power a S7 with 2 PSU's... not sure about the R4 :/

Old thread I know,
but you can't underclock an S9, so drop that idea right now.

You can with the 14Th/s Batch 1 (running the old firmware) - I have it down to 11Th/s (stable) @500MHz with only 45% fan speed.

The latest firmware allows you to set a freq on initial firmware install. So I guess you COULD downgrade with a firmware install

Thanks for the advice - I know it's been a while since I posted in this thread but things got worked out - I have 3x S9's hashing under my college dorm bed (extra fan intake in; exhaust vent out; amazing space-age material to create tents for heat/noise isolation). Pretty cool setup.

I can confirm that the EVGA-1600 Platinum's work great nonstop with S9's, any model. If you're buying a $2k machine it doesn't rly make sense to skimp $100 on a cheaper PSU...

The new EVGA-1000 G3 is amazing on my R4's. I'm considering hashing another R4 but it'd have to be split circuit - that is, like a 550W PSU powering each board from 2 separate circuits (I can have one powering the controller as well). I know this works on the S9 and S7 - does it work on the R4?

Should work .

How about a few photos.  Imgur.com would host and,let you post here.

Yeah. I'm running my S9, batch 2 at ~9.8Th/s (456.25Mhz frequency) with 1000W Enermax Revolution 87+ power supply.
Yes but the new batches, 12 and on I believe, are autotune. You can't adjust the Frequency, so you can't step them down a bit to come under power requirements.
The new 11th ones would likely be okay on 1300watts. but the 14th model I have, from the latest batch, pulls 1425 at the wall. No way to bring it down to squeak it onto a 1300watt psu.
Yeah sorry I have read this with sleepy eyes and have had a brain fart.
New batches suck because of the autotune settings.

If possible I would recommend buying the older batches.

Avalon 721 has been annnounced - and it looks like that 1000 watt PS would work on it.

Dunno why they changed their naming though.

Original poster, you're going to start a fire and burn down your dorm. I'm fine with you dying from the fire but for god's sake, think of other innocent lives who will die a horrible death all because of your stupid greed. For f*ck's sake, just STOP with your willfully selfish actioin. Take your fire hazard S7's and shove'em up your greedy ass!!!

Right, and I've been looking for R4's for quite a while. Will definitely grab batch #2.

Btw, someone else mentioned this, but can these S9's ever catch on fire (assuming some air ventilation, and auto shut-down @80C)?

I wish you all the best, but remember that I recommended on waiting for the R4 or the AvalonMiner 7.0

Great. And I thought the S7's were loud... are the S9's even louder, by a lot?

It's the fans I presume

Should be almost identical, same fans and near-identical cooling setup (except for the S7 batches that tried to get by with 1 fan, those should have been a HAIR quieter).

Someone tested 71db (1m SPL) vs 66db (@1m also) and that is quite a difference (considering it's on a log scale). Doesn't matter now anyways... a bit too late; got some good sound/heat-proofing (and flame-resistant) advice off this forum though, but if anyone has any more knowledge to spare, that'd be appreciated!

The loudness is one hell of an annoying factor in the S9 if you are planning to run it in your dorm.
I would suggest waiting for the sales of Antminer R4 by Bitmain or AvalonMiner 7.0 by Canaan Creative (AvalonMiner7.0 is not yet released and we can't be sure about the noise, but Avalons have been reasonable in the sense of noise in the past).

The same or maybe a little louder.

Is there some sorta noise-isolating padding that I could use without compromising airflow? Because right now 4x S7's are okay, but the fans are at 50-65% and they're under beds. They're also underclocked.

Or even better, a silent fan mod?

i have used lots of materials   this is decent stuff.

AWESOME - Thank you!! Would it go around the insulation pipes I assume (rear exhaust)? Not the actual rig itself (duh), unless I were to do the front fan as well?

It's the fans I presume, so what if I just underclocked to 500-500Mhz? With a heat duct pushing hot air outside and A/C, could I afford to underclock the fans?

I currently have a stash of S7's running under the bed @65% fan speed and it's bearable. The heat isn't.
