I’m a long time frappeholic of Starbucks, and I usually hanging out myself or with my friends there. There is a news plus a video from CNBC that Starbucks would finally accept Bitcoin soon.

However, it won’t happen as of this time as Starbucks clarifies media misrepresentation.

At first I thought starbucks would pay in bitcoin.
However, it is unlikely at the moment, because the bitcoin transfer speed is slow and the transfer cost is high, so it is not suitable for payment at present. I expect the lightning network can change all this.

It's still a disadvantage if they accept bitcoin, There will be a lot of opposition if it is accepted, but i think it would be accepted when btc more popular maybe in two years from now.

So they're not accepting Bitcoin, but will be launching/offering a platform for trading and conversion of Bitcoin? And won't a trusted custodian like a bank maybe increase trust but erode what the system is based on? Sorry I'm new here. Any clarification will be much appreciated.

As fun as that sounds, it might take a long while before big chains start accepting bitcoins as payments. But when it does, we all can expect for other big food chains and hopefully other business establishments to follow suit.

Can we said that this is another reason for bitcoin price to go up?  We are not going to have much good price by one mall adopting cryptocurrencies but when there is a mass adoptions price will increase.

A spokesperson for the multinational coffee chain clarified in comments to Motherboard that in fact “customers will not be able to pay for Frappuccinos with bitcoin,” but rather the company is part of a new venture creating a platform, Bakkt, to “convert digital assets like Bitcoin into U.S. dollars, which can be used at Starbucks,”

I don't get it, they are going to be accepting bitcoin, who cares what they do with it and what they receive. it is the same as when you go to a merchant now and pay them with bitcoin through Bitpay. you pay bitcoin, they accept bitcoin but they receive fiat.

unless I am misreading this, I'd say this is not a bad thing. it creates yet another use case in real world for bitcoin and it will make things even easier for merchants to accept bitcoin with no worries about its price and other risks while they increase their revenue.

It's mixed news.  The plus side is that someone is clearly accepting the bitcoins.  They aren't just vanishing into thin air.  And it will still give you another way to spend your bitcoins in the real world.

The negative side is that, once again, there's just far too much hype and expectation because people place more emphasis than they should on the fiat price of their holdings.  The speculators just get their hopes up about every little thing and then end up disappointed when the reality isn't quite what they thought it was.  People need to temper their expectations.  Rein it in a bit.  Stop jumping at every sensationalist media headline as a sign of "impending moon".  It's just not realistic.  OR, better yet, focus on the real benefits instead of the price.

One of the main reasons these companies aren't accepting bitcoins directly is because of the volatility, but all the speculators out there hyping things out of all proportion are contributing to that volatility.  If you're doing that, you only have yourselves to blame.  Stop putting all the emphasis on the price.  This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, so stop treating it like one and maybe the rest of the world will start doing the same.  The "value" is not the fiat number ascribed to BTC.  The value is in the self-determination, privacy and freedom granted to you by using it.  The value is the total absence of an endless flow of IOUs being printed out of nothing.  The value is in the neutrality, transparency and openness of the network.  This is what you should care about.  Then, perhaps others will start to see it that way.

I think it will take a long time still before big chains will even think about accepting Bitcoin payments - Bitcoin is still too volatile for that and with unpredictable fees.
