A few people have tried asking questions about the rules, and that doesn't seem to work either.

I was hoping that I could find a few new members who were actually interested in crypto, rather than fiat, and didn't just see Bitcoin Talk as a way to scratch a bit of fiat without doing any real work.

I started the node thread to see if any new members are serious about Bitcoin. I installed core when I was still a newbie. Mind you, if I had to rely on public WiFi exclusively today. I would be a Hero member by the time I had synchronised the current blockchain. Smiley

I don't think there is any harm in doing what you are doing, but, in my experience, most of the replies are likely going to be offtopic. I tried once, and the 99% of the replies were from users that didn't even bother reading the rules I clearly stipulated. Nevertheless, I did obtain a couple of nice replies.
When I did this, to be honest, I just feel it was pointless, and got angry anytime I saw they didn't even read the rules. But maybe you have enough patience!!
Maybe you can just advice that if someone don't read the rules of the thread, they will be directly into your ignored list  Cool

EDIT. I actually had an idea... Why don't you create a post about the forum policies? I mean a kind of exam for newbies, in where they need to ask some True/false (maybe) answers to your questions or statements related to the rules in here. Maybe, by doing so, you can encourage them to go and read the rules for once

I think it is no problem and actually good for new members.  TMAN has been also making effort in the same line, asking questions and awarding merits, and found new nullius.

May be not. Actually somewhat disappointed by his definition of coinbase.
For Coinbase user wrote as below:
Coinbase– world’s most popular and reliable cryptocurrency web wallet.

I do not think nullius would write the coinbase definition as above.

Coinbase: A special field used as the sole input for coinbase transactions. The coinbase allows claiming the block reward and provides up to 100 bytes for arbitrary data

I'm having problems getting replies as it is. I started another one about the difference between Scrypt and SHA-256 - maybe I'm getting too technical, but I thought that some of them might do a bit of research.

The first reply looks like a copy and paste with a credit, Hopefully it will generate a bit of discussion, but I don't want to merit a copy and paste. This is the latest thread btw
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/for-merits-which-is-best-scrypt-or-sha-256-4547960

It doesn't hurt to have a wide range from basic to technical; even in the beginners and help section. 98% of the newbies will have next to no clue about the more technical questions but you will find some with a background or who have already put in some research.

Yeah I've seen so many threads that are being started, as a complete copy/paste but with the source cited at the bottom. IMO this is barely below plagiarism, It's just as lazy but at  least they are crediting the content creator. I just wish they'd take a minute and read the article then try and put the info in their own words.

To much to ask; I know.

My only suggestions would be to not advertise they can earn Merit, and see what you get. The responses may come slower but will probably be more genuine.
I agree, and I think most of the newbies could be a little overwhelm with the question.

Maybe they are afraid of being nuke. IMHO, their research could lead to a copy paste manner because it also need a technical answer which are very limited in explanation.

Keep trying and keep it a little bit general specially for a newbie. Just my point of view.

I've started another of these threads -
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/to-newbies-and-juniors-running-full-nodes-4547523

It's aimed at newbies and juniors who have actually started to install a full node. I'm interested to see what responses I get, and also to try to discover if any new members are really running nodes.

Is Tman still around? I haven't seen him posting for ages.
I was recently wondering the same thing.  I miss his explosive tirades in Meta against shitposters.  They're always good for a chuckle.  If he's in Economics, he's definitely slumming, but if he's there trying to award merits his eyes are going to go into full strabismus within about a half-hour.

I don't know if your idea is good or not, but just go for it.  You're the type that tries things to see if they work, and I admire that.  Keep doing that, and don't be a mental couch potato like me.

I admire his attitude although at the very beginning I used to thought he swears a lot LOL
Agreed, though I find the profuse profanity kind of amusing.

I think it is a good idea since it will help new members to learn about wallets and also help them to gain some merits. I think it should be continued.

Those should be worth a bit now. Smiley
What's the relation of this post to this topic?

Sorry I should have included a quote. It relates to the comment about Tman collecting Bitcoin memorabilia a few posts back.

Do you think that it is a good idea to start topics like this?
If you're going to use "common/repetitive questions" (like what you're doing at the moment), it sort of defeats its purpose.

There's an "edit button" for that:

32. Posting multiple posts in a row (excluding bumps and reserved posts by the thread starter) is not allowed.

Be careful of copy-pasters. Many shitposters would just copy paste articles from the internet to get merit. Such is the low-life.
Also the thread will become redundant in a certain amount of time. You have to think of another topic soon. I will give you an idea - follow this thread up with a new thread "Good and Bad experiences of using 3rd Party wallets"

Thanks for the suggestion, and it is a bit time consuming to check for plagiartism. I've also noticed that some of the replies are rehashes of previous replies. I might let the thread run out now, but it does seem to be generating some interesting replies.

I want to start the alt account categorising project next, And I've decided to use the domain https:KonJob.com but I'm not sure if that gives the wrong impression for genuine alts. For example Talk Merit is mine, and it isn't a 'kon job'.

So anyway, I applied as a merit source :)
I've just started this thread on the beginners board -
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/earn-merit-by-telling-us-about-the-dangers-in-using-3rd-party-wallets-4522043

In it I ask posters to describe the dangers inherent in using 3rd party wallets. Do you think that it is a good idea to start topics like this? I'm a bit reluctant to start threads asking for the submission of meritable posts, as I'm not sure they contribute to the forum, and they can lead to a form of begging. Hopefully the topic I've started will be of benefit to new members, and it may also lead to some of them searching for information about wallets.

Is Tman still around? I haven't seen him posting for ages. He didn't strike me as the sort of guy who would hide himself away. Smiley

People tend to get tired of the bullshit in the forum and get busy with other stuff going on in the world and their life. That would be my best guess. He is available on other platforms and the forum if you want to contact him.

and I see his post history is mainly in Economy section recently.
"Collectibles" precisely. TMAN is a collector of different bitcoin collectibles and art - He has a huge Kialara collection which he takes pride in.

Well now I've got to make a decision. I've got a guy that I put on ignore who has submitted a post in the thread.
Maybe he deserves a second chance,  because of trying to post quality stuff... (or he reads Meta and hunting hard for Merit Smiley )
So if you click on unignore, you can ignore him again if that post is useless spam or merit begging.... but you won't find it out without unignoring him at least for a few seconds...
