OP, I respect your idea but I'd much prefer we bring back the actual newbie jail instead.  Maybe restrict noobs to a section where they can't get paid for running a signature, can't earn merit, or both.  Maybe have their exit from said jail contingent upon activity or something like that, I don't know.

The real problem is that there are too many accounts being registered, and they begin spamming from day one--and then they start getting paid for it as soon as they rank up to Jr. Member and can join one of these god-awful altcoin bounties.

Either way, it would be great if we could at least try something even if it's not perfect.  Then at least we'd know if it works.
Wouldn't it be better if they could still earn merits while they are restriceted to a certain section? Then it would be a great idea if there would be enough merit sources that is focused on that section only. If their exit on jail will be based upon reaching a specific activity then all they have to do is to wait it up until their acquired the required number of activity right? It will still be the same but if it would be merit based, they will never have the chance to get out of that section to spam in other boards like they usually do.

If you do not get a certain amount of merit, you will not be allowed to post 'normally' outside of that board or not at all maybe.
...

While I am just as much in favor of stopping the shitposting and sig/bounty campaign spamming, I think requiring a certain number of merits per unit time would unfairly punish people like me because I spend the vast majority of my time in the altcoins mining and announcements sections where there seems to be few or no merit sources circulating. An alternate strategy would be to require members and below earn a certain number of merits per unit time to enable their signature.

I should note this idea has been independently conceived/suggested by many besides me, so I'm not going to claim originality. Just tossing it out as alternative.

Or just disable the sig space of people positively reported for shitposting for a certain number of posts (say 20 shitposts ? you no get signature no mo!!)

This would make more jobs to mod i believe. I am sure if Theymos wants, he can add more moderators, but he seems to be busy right now or got other matters to deal with. Plus, down vote or report system will make people spamming the system  to reduce their competitor in the same rank for signature campaign even though this competitor is not a shitposter, because who knows, maybe the mods will agree with the report.

Hmm, I like it. And though some of the mods seem to abhor automating any of this process (fearing it would be used maliciously), I think as long as there is an ability to appeal the disabling of the sigs by posting in meta and asking for a reevaluation would make this fair while cutting down on the mods' work.

not only merit is already very hard to get, but it also freeze a lot of accounts into their current levels.

a lot of members that were a few points away from being "full member" are now frozen into "member" for a few months if not a few years.
a lot of  jr members, newbies etc....

That's the idea innit?
They can still post and read with their accounts, even a newbie account can do it. With this system in place, they just won't be spamming shitposts everywhere trying to earn tokens.

the merit system is like "ok, your a new to the game ? ok then f**k you, you just had to be here earlier."

Yes, you're late to the game. Fuck you. You shit post everywhere, so fuck you.

DO you realize that when most old members joined, they didn't join here to earn money from signature or bounty campaigns? We did it cuz of our enthusiasm and anyone who does so even today, can easily earn merit. Look at me I don't even try and I get merit and I don't have to circlejerk with anyone for it either. So quit being a salty bitch.

proposing a merit jail is just like trying to stop a fire using oil. good luck.

Depends on the oil and it's flashpoint, I might use vegetable oil to smother a flame.

if such jail were to exist, people would eventually move to some other forum.

Those people are welcome to move to other forums, right now! No other crypto based forum that I know of employ a signature space from which you can earn. I dare them, leave this place.

twitter already have put a serious blow to bitcointalk.org in terms of crypo-related traffic ratio (%).
you certainly don't want this forum to lose the edge isn't it ?

err ... you drunk?

I don't think if someone already has said in this thread or not,but a lot of people create accounts for asking questions related to issues they have with cryptos or to know why they are banned and the like. These people mostly don't care about merit, which is good. So why should they pay for the actions caused by literal dumbfucks who's only motive is to earn from this forum.
And theymos believes in freedom of speech and stuff like that,he wouldn't do anything like that. Spamming has comparatively reduced. It has become smart spamming but still.
These sort of restrictions are not required right now, merit is doing its job very well. Only people who have their sole objective to earn via bounty/airdrops/sig campaigns are unhappy about this merit situation as they have to rank up.

Think of this like a more stringent housekeeping. Its required for an efficient place. And housekeeping costs money!
And this Merit jail wouldn't hard block anyone from posting anywhere, they'll just have a longer post interval wait time. And anyone can express their freedom of speech within the jail as well.
I just think something like this would keep the rest of the forum increase the quality of interactions between individuals.

Remember we used to have newbie jail?
Why not make a Merit jail as well?
If you do not get a certain amount of merit, you will not be allowed to post 'normally' outside of that board or not at all maybe.
We can do this for each rank and not just newbies. Might also need to make the admins of that board become the defacto merit sources. Their job would be to exclusively asard merit to decent posts within that board.

What do you guys think?

A newbie jail would be the best way out of the current problems. Having a separate jail for different ranks seems to be going overboard. A better step might be to make a requirement of a single merit for promotion to junior member.
A newbie jail, and the paid Copper membership is still a solution, if they want to jailbrake Smiley
So if they think they will earn a hell lot of money spamming the forum, they should pay first and they will be free to post (and the mods will stop them if needed...)

The problem I see here is that the default board where everyone can post would be a breeding ground for merit. Obviously it won't solve anything as if they know that a certain board in the forum has more merits to receive then it won't matter to them that they cannot post on other boards. Their main goal is to get merit in order for them to rank up. Limiting where they can post on the forum will not be a problem to them just as long they can post on that default board where they can get merits.

Few questions arise in my mind :

1. Would there be further sub-categories or it would be a mess made up of posts which would have else belonged different categories ?

2. Would the certain merit requirement be time based, say minimum to get x merit per month, or total merit of particular user ? If it's the first case, then users who might not be that active or temporarily not posting for long might also suffer even though their posts be of high quality.
I understand your point. If you want to post in certain category for the right topic but you can't post due to requirements so you would be post in sub-categories that would result in mix up topics. I can't imagine on what happen if a sub-category with different kinds of topic about crypto.

Rank                          Required merit{ every 25 post or maybe less}
Newbie                              1
Jr Member                            2
Member                            3
Full Member                       10
Sr. Member                        15
Hero Member                      20

This is a very bad idea. Abusers don't care about it and they will evade from the jail. You will stop the spam but also the people who are trying to do their best but are not rewarded.

Can be usefull only at newbie rank.

This is a nice suggestion but we may have to work on the "Required Merit" because with such high differences for different ranks mostly Hero or Sr. Members would land into Merit Jail !
I accept that generally post quality of higher member might be more but making it 20 times difficult for Hero than for Newbie is not feasible.

that is only my suggestion, we can reduce it whatever admin or moderator think. We are not banning, just prevent to post for some days only.
I guess 1 for Newbie and 5 for Hero might be enough.

... member is not allowed to post for 7 days or more....
*except for posting in Merit Jail section.

Btw, considering this system in place, what would happen if user deletes his posts ? One might do it to remain out of jail, but his activity would suffer.

Then how many mods do you expect to do moderation on that board? It will be a hard job you know. A lot of bad people gathered together wont make board a place with a lot of meritorious posts.

Just because your post was not merit worthy doesn't mean that you are a bad person.
If theymos really cares to improve this place, then he'll hire just enough mods to get this done.
The forum can afford this. (Economically as well as practically).

20 merits for 25 posts for heroes? That's absurd!
And it's going to be even harder for lower ranks if not impossible.

I do not think that would be a good idea.

1. Would there be further sub-categories or it would be a mess made up of posts which would have else belonged different categories ?

Categories could be there. But it could be a soft jail. As in you still get to post out of this place but with maybe a day of wait time between posts.

2. Would the certain merit requirement be time based, say minimum to get x merit per month, or total merit of particular user ? If it's the first case, then users who might not be that active or temporarily not posting for long might also suffer even though their posts be of high quality.

Agreed with inactivity issue. Users could get their merit decayed with long periods of inactivity. But that is a different thing that does not require the existence of Merit Jail.

Time based merit expiration would really burn out the newbies and the mods pretty soon.

Maybe it should be like get xx amount of merit per rank before you get to post outside this board with normalcy.
