ICC eyes $4 billion-plus media rights money for Indian market

Quote
Nobody can be certain but here are some facts. In the last cycle, the ICC sold its rights for just over US$2 billion. But that was a different, linear world: that figure was for all rights on all platforms globally. For this cycle, the ICC is believed to have a benchmark figure in mind, an "asking price" of $1.44 billion for a four-year deal and $4 billion (1.44 multiplied by 2.Cool for an eight-year deal. That is double the last deal for eight years, and it is only a benchmark figure - so the minimum they expect - and it is only for the India market.

I think that this figure is a bit too optimistic one from the ICC. They are thinking that the IPL was sold for $6 billion (for 5 year period) and therefore they can sell their rights for $4 billion, since it covers 8-year period. But IPL involves far more matches when compared to the ICC tournaments, and another fact is that matches involving India are not very numerous in world cups. On top of all this, some of the Indian media companies are not very happy with the lack of transparency in the bidding process.
Yeah seems far fetched but anything could happen if the broadcasters get their way, if not then it's not going to reach this level.

I wonder what their expectation are from other markets, I know it won't be much.

On another note, it looks like a new form of colonization to me. Squeeze every penny from a poor country and then subsidize rich countries including associates, after that do virtue signaling all day long that BCCI is ruining the game.

Just a day left for the most expected and hyped match between India and Pakistan. As like every other match this is a regular match, but from the very beginning matches played between India and Pakistan have got big expectations and this is being used a big market by the media and broadcasting channels. In the last match played between these two, Pakistan made a strong win. This time who's gonna make the win, I believe this time it is for India.

Well! IPL is only for men and ICC tournaments cover both Men and Women. Therefore they might be able to get that amount considering the rapid rise of women's cricket in India. The time frame is for eight years and WIPL is going to launch next year, therefore, the craze for both men's and women's cricket will go up in the coming years. If you consider those factors then I think they are asking a reasonable amount.

I agree, after summarizing the expansion of cricket in India, it is very reasonable. As far as the amount of revenue ICC generates from the Indian market is concerned, I can easily believe it. Media rights for the ICC's events for the next eight years will be available for sale in the Indian market. As a result, India has replaced Australia and England in terms of cricket superpower status.

If so, my question is why India giving more chances to Virat Kohli. what is the reason behind it? I consider him worthy only for his outstanding performance in the past in T20 World Cup. Who can also do well in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Expecting big from him is the reason for the ongoing situation. According to me, Virat Kohli is a good player who in recent months isn't performing good in all formats of cricket. However he have managed to have an average of 20+ which is low, but have reached high score of 50+ runs. I'm not sure whether it is politics or something else running behind, but he deserves to be in the team beyond his attitude that I dislike.
I couldn't agree with you on this. Every player deviates from form at ‍any time and and after a while they find it again. Virat's time will be the same. But there is nothing else behind it. Moreover, the idea that any political issue is involved here is completely baseless. Many may dislike him for his personal behavior but as a player he is a successful cricketer.

Perhaps the selectors' intention to keep Kohli because he is an experienced batsman, especially having record in the big tournaments. In fact, those who are considered to be a strong opponent against India, Kohli have good performance records against all those rivals. He holds numerous records in all three forms of cricket. Especially in the T20 format, he has occupied the first place of “ Most player of the series award” , the 2nd position in the world “Most fifteen in careers”, “Highest career batting average” and has various records with his name.
Records and averages never help any player for keep place in teams as right now competition is tough in Indian squad with too many batsmen performing amazingly in last few tours and things are never been easy for anyone to lost concentration but selectors still giving another chance to Kohli which is not bad at all but for me, it's going to be tough for Kohli because now if he fails to perform good then surely he is going to be in red zone and most chances he could be out of T-20 World Cup which could be more problem for him and his team.

Here in Asia cup I am not feeling they can face any problem in their early three matches as they are going to play against Pakistan, Singapore and then in semifinal against any team from other group which is also easy for them surely they are going through until final without any trouble.

Virat Kohli used to play games that stirred the audience and the whole world in his game. His amazing game made India more popular and their cricket board more popular. The Indian Cricket Board never imagined that a man like Virat Kohli would go down in such a dark age.No one wants to lose a player like him. Of course he is being given opportunities again and again. It is unbelievable whether another player like Virat Kohli will be second. But we want Virat Kohli to return to the field in his old form.
Virat Kohli was hero for Indian team. Now he is playing so bad game beyond imagination.  It doesn't look like he can play like he used to.  If we look, we will see.  He is not as focused on the game as before.  He has lost interest in his game.  But if he can bring his focus back to the game then Virat Kohli can play well.  Gave him many opportunities.  To do well but could not do well.  Now let's see what he can do.

The squad for Asia cup was announced almost two weeks ago and Kohli has been included. The team will be lead by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will be the vice-captain. Now this is going to be a very crucial tournament for Kohli. If he fails to perform once more, then selectors may take some drastic step such as excluding him from the T20 World Cup, which is due in a few months from now. There is going to be tough competition for the #3 slot in the batting order. Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda are in excellent form.
Giving Virat Kohli another chance in Asia Cup is surely not wise decision from selectors but still we have to respect this because they know better ground realities and can manage better because I am personally feeling they need to give him some more rest and then giving him chance in T-20 World Cup is much better for him and team because he needs more relax and good environment if he still wants to go with his international career full fledge.

Now, we are heading for Asia Cup T-20 here for me in current shape India is hot favorite because they are coming with their full strength and their batting lineup is also in good shape so most chances they are going to win this cup eight time and this is going to be very good for them before T-20 World Cup which is going to play in Australia in October.

Yes we all know and all enjoyed his game. Virat Kohli is a big player who has won everyone's hearts by shaking the field with his great game. But in between he has performed so badly that the Indian Cricket Board is thinking of him differently. But I think he should be given some more opportunities, he should not take such a big step in the meantime. If he is kept away from the Asia World Cup, he can definitely leave the cricket board for good. But he should be given opportunities by various tests.

Yes i agree with you, Virat Kohli already has been taken many chances from the Indian selectors. But he is failing to return to his form. In this case potential players are having trouble getting opportunities. So it could be Virat Kohli's last chance to play T20 World Cup 2022. If he can utilize on this opportunity, then the important place in the team will be upon him again. There is no more time. Soon we will get the solution of this problem.

I don’t know if choosing Virat Kohli for the upcoming tournaments is going to be the best way to go. Virat Kohli is not informed at all. And playing him might result in a bad outcome for team India. And I don’t think the selectors should take that chance. Virat Kohli has already been given a lot of chances and he was unable to prove himself in those times. So I think BCCI should try to play some other players instead of Virat Kohli and give Virat Kohli some rest.

Anyway, now he is selected in the team so there is no question of dropping him immediately. But finalizing the playing XI is going to be very tricky. Let's say Kohli fails in the first 2-3 matches. There will be a lot of pressure to give opportunity for some of the younger players. Fortunately for him, some of the replacements such as Shreyas and Venkatesh are also out of form and therefore not selected in the squad. One thing is sure. He will be under a lot of pressure while participating in the Asia Cup tournament.

At this point, Virat Kohli is the player with the most star value within the Indian national team. Dropping him won't be easy, as he has perhaps the largest fanbase for any sports player in India. As I mentioned earlier, the best option for the selectors would be to give Kohli an "extended break". In this case, Kohli's ego won't be hurt and the selectors won't have to worry about his form as well. On the other hand, if he gets dropped from the team then he may feel humiliated. In that case he may retire from international cricket in protest and that may not be something that the selectors want to face.
A good point giving him some more rest from International cricket is surely in favor of him and Team India because right now selectors can give him rest from Asia Cup which could be good idea for having him in better shape in coming world cup which is going to play in Australia after two months.

With the current form of many youngsters in recent tours selectors still can choose a good and strong squad for Asia Cup where we have no big challenge and surely more experience for these youngsters which are performing amazing in last few months in tour of England, West Indies and Zimbabwe hopefully they will understand this all and try to have set their target for youngsters in long run because right now this event could be very helpful for all youths which are going to have a good future in Team India in coming years.

I don’t think it’s only the stardom. Virat Kohli is generally a very good player and one of the best in the world. Maybe the selectors are still thinking that if there is a slight chance he might come back to form, the electors are probably wanting to take that chance. If this was anyone else obviously he would have been dropped from the team. But Virat Kohli is a very trusted person for the selectors. Probably that is the reason why they are still keeping him chance after chance.

If the BCCI wanted to humiliate him I think they would have done that already as they had a lot of chances to do that as well. But I don’t think BCCI has any intention like that. They also know Virat Kohli is an asset to the team. So they are trying to do everything possible so that they can handle this situation smoothly. Virat Kohli has already been told to take a break. To which I’m quite sure he didn’t agree. But if he continues to play like this at a point he will eventually be dropped from the team. And if he is the person who has at least a little self-respect, he’s not going to protest that.
