No one will blame HODL because everyone in this forum will agree that bitcoin or altcoin price will have high price in the future, it's has been becoming tradition since they known this forum. But you have other way with your belief in cryptocurrency price in the future, for instance, you can sell first and you can buy at lower price. As a result you wouldn't got big loses like this time.
When market prices fall, the best strategy is to spend more money on potential COINS, because the market always goes up. More will usually come in a few months.

I am a relative newbie but have remained pretty calm during the difficult last week or so. The markets are falling significantly again, is this still relatively normal and is the best advice just to HODL? Moving forward I think I will set stop losses on all holdings to protect my capital against falls like this.

Of course it's normal, but for those with low volume coins to drop. What you should do when market is falling is to look for coins which has a significant to rise again like Bitcoin and ethereum then buy some of it to have a better chance to gain profit in your investment.
Crypto currency market is always volatile and the best thing you can do when prices fall is to hold your coins tight, if prices fall drastically it is a sign that it will bounce back to the original price very fast but when is the not known factor for everyone here.
when market fall for me i think is time to buy more,for the coins you speculate that might do well you can buy more and for the ones you dont see the future in them ,you might sale some portions,this works for me
